Dion Sanderson has been named the Sunderland AFC Supporters’ Young Player of the Year.

The 21-year-old defender arrived on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in October and quickly became a popular figure on Wearside, making a total of 27 appearances and contributing to 10 clean sheets.

Sanderson scored his first professional goal during his time at the Stadium of Light, heading home to open the scoring in March’s 2-0 win against Rochdale.

A back injury sustained against Wigan Athletic unfortunately ended his season last month, but his defensive maturity and versatility earned many plaudits over the course of the campaign and he played a pivotal role as the Lads reached the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs.

After collecting the award, Sanderson said: “My time here at Sunderland has been class. When I came here, all I wanted to do was just as much as I could to help the boys. I have every confidence in the team to finish the job and win the Play-Offs. I had to work hard to get in the team to begin with. I was in and out of the squad at the start, but since the Head Coach came in he gave me a chance and everything I feel has gone well. The fans have been absolutely class, and for me it couldn’t have gone any better.”

Cath Reid said: “On behalf of the Branch Liaison Council, it gives us immense pleasure to present Dion Sanderson with the Supporters’ Young Player of the Year award. We have enjoyed watching Dion throughout his loan spell from Wolverhampton Wanderers and we believe that he fully deserves the award for his contribution throughout the course of the season. We wish him the very best with his recovery and know that he will be with us every step of the way during the Play-Offs.”

Sanderson joins an impressive list of players to win the Supporters’ Young Player of the Year award, which includes Jordan Henderson, Jordan Pickford and Fabio Borini.

Probably end up back on the bench with this committee in charge, he only got his chance to show us how good he is by accident, not by this scrupulous planning and assessment claptrap we are lectured on daily, pity a few more of our younger element had not had the same good fortune as Dion, we might have seen some better performances and avoided these play-offs.

Devil’s advocate time… There is also a possibility that they may not have been good enough and we wouldn’t even have made the play offs.

not saying that is the case, just that either option could be true

Looking back I honestly think we would have gone up if he had stayed fit.
His pace mopped up a load of attacks. Bringing in an unfit Wright just made it worse.

I know mate absolutely. I think you’re right too. But I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the guy who sees it all the time and does the job. For now anyhow!!

well deserved imho, not even 'our player' and was basically thrown in with our defensive problems yet he more than stepped up to the plate...he has the slight chance of premier football but i would love it if he decided to kick his career on with us.

He has been superb at centre half. I think he has every chance to become an international player. He is quick, he reads the game well, strong and aggressive and can play the ball. He was also a leader. He seems to have it all really. He looks the sort of player you want to play next to as well, him and O'Nien seemed ready to scrap for each other. Not to mention he seems like a cracking lad as well.

He also seems to have fallen for the club as well. Imagine if we all got chance to cheer him on next season. Something tells me we have a chance of another loan whatever league we are in. Fingers crossed anyway.

Imagine if Parkinson had actually played him and Johnson hadn't been too cautious to finally give him a chance.
It really does boil my pish that both managers decided to take the easy option by picking Flanagan in front of him.
