Who here thought Enrique would sign a new contract?

Did anyone realistically think Enrique was going to sign a new contract?

After he didn't sign one back in February, because he wanted to "wait til we survived relegation"...

After he didn't sign one when we did survive relegation, pretty easily and way before the season ended...

After he didn't sign one after the pre-season break...

After he openly criticised the club's ambition through the media...

After he openly criticised the club's ambition through Twitter...

After he openly spoke about what he wanted to achieve, wanted to play in Europe and which club's he'd like to play for...

    Well? Seriously anyone..?

Either this man did (and 2 others) or he's spouting absolute b*ll**** again which we are all expected to swallow and respect...

"I would be asking why we hadn't got a left-back in earlier (if I was a fan)," said Pardew. "The difference was, if Jose had signed, we would have ended up with two very, very expensive left-backs and that's something we couldn't afford when we're trying to get the best possible side.

"We also need that money in other areas and of course we haven't got the striker over the line yet. It all has to be within a structure. It's difficult for fans - you try telling a 14-year-old who's passionate about the game why Enrique has gone, he can't understand that.

"I understand a big bulk of our fans just wanting our best players wanting to stay here - it doesn't always work like that unfortunately. We have a back up plan in place.

"You don't want your best players to leave, but we were vulnerable. We offered him a deal and he didn't want to sign it so we had nowhere to go."

You may notice he completely contradicts himself (or thats how I read it) at the end there by saying quite plainly "he didnt want to sign it". This deal JE was offered happened 6 months ago and has been 'on the table' ever since.

I mean, what is this? Why is he saying these words? Is he really this incompetent?

Or maybe he just isn't a very good public speaker...

We all fully understand that he doesn't get any help from the powers above him in publicly speaking to the fans. But at the end of the day, name one football club where the chairman comes out and discusses transfers with journalists...? Not many.

There is no excuse for this constant tripe.

So; 'We haven't got a left-back - because in case JE signed - but he didn't wanna sign - so we had nowhere to go (what does this mean?!) - so now we don't have a left back......'

Erm yes ok, that all makes perfect sense. The club have had a grade A plan for the past 6 months regarding this issue then?

You never heard Hughton speak in this way...and he wasn't Llambias and Ashley's best mate!

I'm done bashing Pardew now, I promise.

    But jesus christ man....

Anyway, who do we reckon will fit in at left back on Saturday evening? Ive heard Shane Ferguson is fit again. To be honest I wouldn't mind Ryan Taylor slipping in there. After all, he played there for Wigan with relative success and the whole reason he came to us in the first place is because we needed a left back when we sold N'Zogbia to Wigan in exchange.....everybody associated with our football club has seemed to totally forget/miss that point entirely.

He never said he WOULD sign a contract if we stayed up, he said he'd CONSIDER it.

All Pardew is saying is that he (Jose) was offered a contract and he didn't accept it & we couldn't afford to get a replacement in earlier in case he did sign a new contract, just means they were working hard to convince Jose to sign a new contract. Not really contradicting himself.

    Just saying.

I had a small hope he might, if no one came in for him. But come on, we've known this was happening for months.

When u have a sell first buy later policy, u will always leave urself with gaps now and again.

The fact that this sale has been nailed on for 6 months and we are going into the first game of the season is a total joke.

    End of.

Liverpool might not have bid though, or might not have agreed terms with him. Then we'd be stuck with 2 LB's expecting first team football and on good money.

Even if that were true. Who are we a League 2 side who cant afford to have 2 left backs now? Even tho Smith and Xisco are still on the books.

Having 2 quality LB's wud be a good thing.

We could afford them but remember who's in charge? We wouldnt waste money on 2 LB's.

Quite simple this one for me, no he was never signing a new contract unless there was serious investment that suggested we could push up the league. With the opposite being the case he was gone. As for timing, to be fair to Pardew he is caught in the middle trying to manage a delicate balance. A top club signs a replacement before someone leaves. A selling club who is looking to gather funds does it the other way round. Unfortunately we currently fall into the latter category and this is the reason for no replacement as yet. My only gripe is not setting him a deadline of return to pre season and once it was clear he wasn't signing (including if he was unsure), sell him and get the replacement in.

I was beginning to think he would start the season and maybe depart in January or see out his contract after his long linked move away didn't materialise until the last few days.

Personally I wouldn't boo JE, he stayed when others jumped ship and is a great example of a player who stayed to prove himself and became a fantastic player as a result as opposed walking when the going got tough.

Annoyed that we go into our first game of the season without a first choice left back when we've known that our current one was likely to go.

Oh and I just had chicken <ok> That one off the Marco Pierre White advert, where he mashes chicken stock and olive oil into a paste and cover the chicken in it- tiz' the future I tellsya. The Future!

Exactly. Why have we let Enrique be the puppet master in all of this and play the club like a mug.

We all know he was looking to leave as late ago as February. So why the hell cudnt we just accept it, actively look to sell him, create a bidding war between clubs, got a higher fee for him and gave us much more time to replace him.

This is just too logical obviously. The fact we are in this little situation is down right pathetic. The club have acted like Enrique was Lionel Messi or something and we couldn't possibly afford to lose him.

Hes above average at the best of times. Plenty of LB's around of similar quality.
