Whilst I don't want to sound irresponsibly optimistic about the fitness retention of David Connolly, I have to point out that the player actually isn't injury prone, despite his history over the last few years. He has spent of lot of his career injury free, and his return to full fitness, this time, could last the whole season. Of course, he could get himself clobbered at any time, by a burly defender, or turn an ankle badly, whilst landing from a leap. But all players can suffer that fate. Injury prone players like Jonathan Woodgate break down whilst training or playing, even when they are otherwise perfectly free from previous injuries. Connolly isn't in that bracket, as far as I have read, and being one of those smaller, Keegan type, players means that 34 years is no age to be worrying that it'll all end soon. Plus, NA doesn't seem to be too bothered about Connolly lasting the pace of a game, and appears to substitute him just as much for tactical reasons as anything else. Yes, he could be crocked tomorrow. But so could any player. Let's hope they all have a relatively injury free season.

Do we need more players..? I'm not at all sure we do, at present.

Okay, re Seabourne I am prepared to give him the benifit of the doubt as I have only seen him once this season (he was okayish). I shall be keeping a close eye on his distribution on Saturday and if he proves me right I will chase him out of town with a pitch fork. If I am wrong I will pretend that I have always loved him and state this several times on a football discussion site.

considering we conceded 2 away from home last night and only when we had scored 3 I wouldn't be too worried about our defence after all the 'chestball' given as a handball against Leeds doesn't count so we would have only conceded 2 in 3 games 2 of which away. Not bad goals against ratio in my eyes.

Give the lad more experience at this level while we are scoring at the other end I say. Can only get better that way rather than becoming Chelski and ManC leaving all the youth on the bench never to get experience. At this rate all the England side will be Saints or ex Saints player in a few years :)

Fabio should be paying us some form of commission for feeding him the new players.

While I agree Seaborne has seemed to turn a new leaf the idea of Fonte getting injured and us being left with either Jaidi or Martin worries me. I think we should get a new cb in to challenge Seaborne and loan martin out this season.

Quite an opinion. Did you see him play at Barnsley or Ipswitch last night ?

This! A couple of loans would be pretty much risk free and would tide us over. Maybe the ST position could be loan with view to buy, from Italy - Don Cortese using his connections to good effect!

And, as other are saying get rid of the dead wood (I don't wan't to call Fish dead wood, but I guess he kind of is, but still not as rotten as Punch!) even if it is on loan and the other team pick up his wages. Get them in that shop window again!

CB, same as everyone else. Jaidi had me worried at times with his pace last season and heaven forbid Fonte picking up a knock or a ban. Cannot comprehend turning up to watch us play a team like West Ham with Martin and Seabourne at the back!!!:emoticon-0107-sweat

A good thread with lots of different opinions.
I Personally agree with CB and his views, some people do become blinkered on certain players whether they feel there Good or Bad and CB comment

    Seaborne's shortcomings are over-exaggerated.

    In the same way as...

    Fonte's shortcomings are mostly ignored.

    Is very true.
One of the goals last night came from Fonte's poor clearance straight to a Ipswich player then the ball back into our box caught Seaborne off his man just enough to allow him to turn and create a goal.
Who got the blame ? Yep Seaborne. Because some fans want it that way and are a little blinkered.

I really like the fact that there is strength in the squad in most positions and i believe we will still buy a experienced CB and whether he takes Seabornes place or not will depend on how well he and Fonte are playing. That is how Adkins likes it and i totally agree.

Seaborne still hasn't won me over. And if we take him out of the picture, I'd still like another as cover.

I agree with you about the Connelly injury myth. Yes, he's had a recent long term injury, but he isn't an injury prone player. That said good quality back ups are essential in this league and will provide competition for places (something which appears to be working at the moment), so I wouldn't be unhappy with a new CB and CF.

Any addition to the team will need to be quality, as the existing team are proving their competence at this level
with such a great start to the season.

I don't think NA will be pressured or rushed into buying anyone.
If the right player comes up at the right price then I can see another striker or CB coming in.
If no one comes to light or prices are inflated beyond reason then I think we are okay as we are.
The loan market is always great in this situation and opens just after the transfer window closes.
So there is a lot less panic.
It is also harder to attach big name players who may now question will I get into the team as the team is starting to settle
and new partnerships Lambo & Connolly, Fonte & Seaborne are developing. And I must say looking good.

The starting 11 last night again showed how they can adapt to this league & work together as a unit.
Whether it's playing silky Brazilian football & scoring goals for fun or digging in and weathering the storm
when a good opposition comes at you. Good strength of character & experience when working as a team was shown to get the result we did last night.

Think this is spot on what you are saying. Seems how ever well he plays some people would just love to see him fail.
Can't understand it really, as it is for the good of the team if he does well .

Totally agree with you the more him & Fonte play together the better they will become.
Glad the lad is proving them ( Seaborne bashers ) wrong. Adkins has shown his faith in him
    by selecting him.

Hammond is another one who again is doing the job & showing his doubters what he is made of.
Really pleased for both of these Saints players.

In all honesty I dont think the benefit of signing another striker would be that great. We have Lambert, Connolly, Barnard, Lallana, Guly, de Ridder and Forte who can play up there or there abouts and all can score. We have four absolutely class centre mids (Chappers even plays out on the right and Cork is very versatile indeed) who can slot in nicely if Lallana or Guly need to be pushed up top. Its not worth risking morale which, at the moment, is our prized asset!! As NA says its all about the balance.

Simply put, the squad is great for right now, if everything were to remain the same.

I do not trust that we will be injury free, and while we have lots of depth, there are two guys that I feel we cannot get by without. If Fonte goes down, then what? If Lambert goes down, then what?

These are the reasons we need another CB and forward. Maybe they will be healthy all year, and I'm wrong. But until then I'm of the belief that we need two more players.

Are you David Connolly in disguise SECONDSTAIN?????!!!!??????

But seriously good post. The lad has had some bad luck in recent years would be great if he can stay fit and keep this form going.

Do you think any of the players post on these boards in disguise??!!!!????? Dark Lord could actually be the man we do not name anymore! Spiderman could actually be talking from experience! Rocket Swanie could be Cortese!!!!! Second thoughts nah!

Matt Le Tissier used to post, though rarely, on the old red paged Saints Forever, just after he'd retired, back around 2002. I remember doing a printscreen and save of one or two of his offerings. Still got them on a HDD somewhere.
