I have to agree that today sort of shot alot of us in the foot. although alot of people believe the TP would sort him out - I personally just think it would end up being another stark bollock naked head but in the showers! Anyway, I was one of those bloggers who hopped Barton (the footballer) would be in our team soon but did state that I thought Barton (the charachter) was the wrong one to potentially break our wage structure for! I just want a decent midfileder thats all and maybe this desire has clouded my moral judgement?

I have not seen the highlights of the game tonight but enough said, I just hope Pulis refrains from pursuing him.

Could Pulis reign him in though? He does have a knack of rehabilitating players. i would still like to see him in Stoke colours he is what we need in midfield some bite and someone to put the fear of god into the opposition.
Let's be honest your a midfielder and running in at you who would you prefer Diao, Delap or Barton?

I didn't see Pardew's interview, but apparently he defended Barton so I doubt he'll be leaving, and if he did I hope to God we don't sign him. Like I said before the game, he is a good midfielder, probably better than all of ours put together, but he would destroy the dressing room. I doubt even Pulis could do something about his 'character' if prison couldn't.

Hes a thug who needs locking up, you only have to have a look at te bloke to see hes got issues. Nobody can help him and how hes treated people he doesnt deserve any more chances.

Surely we are better than signing that tool!, plus he will probably want atleast a 3 year contract so if it turns out he is a DICK (which I think he will be) we will have to pay him off to get rid.

I wouldnt touch him with a barge pole!

    Well said Ricc...my sentiments aswell.
He's a great midfielder but would cause tons of aggro in the dressing room.

cheers mate, I just cant believe that we are in a position where we are even considering signing him, AND breaking the wage structure to do it. Surely there are other players out there with similar ability with the RIGHT attitude. If we did sign him of course I would support him but my opinion would still be the same.

My biggest worry with Barton is the effect it might have on our disciplinary record. At the moment we have a public reputation as a very physical team which when compared with the likes of, say Arsenal, as a random example, honest, is not really borne out by the cards raised by referees. I think this would be in great danger if we acquired him. It's not just what he does, it’s the danger of how he reacts, and I think it's pretty clear he is now a marked man. I think for the team as a whole he would turn out to be a liability.

ricc, you are right.Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I`ve just had it!!!I admit 2 days ago I would have liked Barton in the team but having seen highlights of yesterdays incidents----NOOOOOOOOOOO! I think it all stems from desperation to see us sign a midfielder who can pass the ball.

Stoke's ESPN correspondent seems to think Barton was at the match today., others have said it was just his family that was there. Also a few saw Rafa Benitez at the game.

Barton would ruin what stoke have got team spirt. A better signing for stoke would be Palcious or parker, dont think stoke will get either given this city i live in is such a ****hole

Tony Pulis has got the backing of his dressing room to sign Newcastle’s controversial midfielder Joey Barton.

Stoke boss Pulis will make a fresh move this week to sign the 28-year-old who was told he could leave St James’ Park on a free following his Twitter row.

With the transfer deadline approaching, Pulis still wants to beef up his midfield – and bring in another striker – to make his squad strong enough to deal with Stoke’s Europa League and Premier League fixture list .

Today’s game at Norwich comes barely 48 hours after a tough away win at FC Thun in the first leg of the final qualifier for the league stage of the Europa League.

It has underlined the need for reinforcements to cope with a season that could stretch to more than 60 games

Experienced defender Danny Higginbotham said: “I don’t know about the manager’s plans, but I do know that Joey is a very good player.

“He is one of those who are awful to play against because he’s always in the thick of the game, and to have him as a team-mate would be something that a lot of players would be very happy about.”

Pulis puts great store by dressing-room unity, and needed to know that outspoken Barton would be made welcome.

Higginbotham, currently working back to fitness from a knee ligament injury, says Stoke’s fans would also like to have Barton for his commitment and work rate.

He said: “Looking at the squad we’ve got, we have some good individuals, but, as a team, our work ethic is absolutely outstanding. The fans like that.

“It’s a working class area and the people love their football.

“The way we play as a team really works for our supporters.

“Like them, we give everything we’ve got.”

I'm going to buck the trend here.. Tin hat is at the ready.
I know that Barton off the field and sometimes on it has been a complete and utter tool! But, after watching the game via an internet stream earlier today. My respect for the guy went up quite a few notches... The Sunderland player's were obiously trying to wind Barton up. And, to his credit he didn't take the bait.
Cattermole clattered him and he just got up and got on with it... He did get booked but it was for actually trying to defend one of the Sunderland player's who was ready to lose it!

IF it means we can't/don't want to/Can not afford Palacious. I would hope that T.P. takes a gamble with Joey Barton. He played really well today and even the Newcastle fans were behind him. They are not stupid and IF he's doing OK in their eyes. He's worth the risk IMHO anyway.

Who's first to bite my head off!

sorry potts I dont agree, the problem is that every player will be trying to wind him up and usually they get a response. Way too much of a risk for me mate as hes a loose cannon

Oh.. please not Barton. I don't like to judge a players football with incidents off the pitch but I don't really rate him as a player to be honest. He's an arrogant thug IMO.

Fuller was very similar when he came to Stoke and Pulis managed to get a lot out of him. As Higgy said in the interview above, I think he is really a good player and would suit us and I would back Pulis to get the best out of him.

    Potts,
    As I previously posted:

    Morally, not on your Nellie
Pragmatically - YES, in my opinion he is in the top 5 midfielders in the UK!!!

Every top team for ages has had at least one nasty but brilliant bastard in midfield, going baack to Spurs with Dave MacKay (sp)
    Roy Keane
    Patrick Viera
    Grahaem Souness
    Michael Essien

    Etc etc etc

And those guys also scored, both on and off the field!!
