I've just been reading your globe trotting exploits on the holiday front and second home locations on this fair Isle of ours. Clearly those with another place to live aren't short of a couple of bob so I would like to encroach on your holiday conversation and chuck in an advert for my own part of the Country. If there is a god and you believe in him/her (for PC purposes) then he would live in the South West. If you have a bit of spare cash north of £500k you could find somewhere in Cornwall or parts of Devon. There are some really smashing small towns in both and the locals are also friendly and welcoming. You can't often walk out of your front door and be on the beach in 30 seconds but if you leave home after dark and don't know where you are going you can fall off a cliff and be on the beach in less than that. I was in the RN for 14 years and went around a bit to say the least. Travelling abroad now doesn't have the same appeal for me but I can honestly tell you that the UK is as good as the vast majority of places to go and see and hugely better than a lot of them. There are places in the UK that lots don't even get to see but if they did they would maybe scrap the passport, get rid of the gash Euros in their drawer and never venture out of the borders again. Going abroad for holidays became fashionable in times gone by but I think lots are now changing back to the home holiday and that's a good thing. Anyway, come see us and you won't be disappointed.
I've been to Holy Island. Very peaceful place, especially in the winter time when there are few other tourists. Cold weather has never bothered me, so I enjoy exploring the North and Scotland when the weather is wintry.
Isn't Israel meant to have a big club scene now? Loads of people seem to be flocking there. There and Bali. I went when I was a kid. Got locked in the downstairs of a restaurant as fighting broke out. Will be a memory that sticks.
Sweden will be my next trip, probably in September. Boras, just outside of Gothenburg for a few days. Then will either travel down to Copenhagen, or what I would like to do is take the train to Bergen in Norway. Beautiful countries and beautiful people(the women anyway), but a shame about the beer prices.
I love the West Country but I can't afford 500000. 250000 is my limit for a second home. I am a Maltese Citizen so could buy a place over there. But I prefer to look Oop North.
The West Country is incredibly cheap DP if you avoid the tourist hotspots of Devon & Cornwall. For a 30 min drive to the beaches you can easily buy a sizeable house for £150,000.
Really Royston Vasey. The average price of a terraced house in Devon for example is £198k. The average for all types across the county is £254k. The cheapest in Devon is in Plymouth in an area called Devonport at around £154k average. Devonport is not the smartest of areas being where the Dockyard is. It may seem cheap for the South East or London but it definately isn't cheap for the rest of it. You are however right that the price depends on the where and if you go further from the tourist hotspots then it does shave a bit off. Malta under Mintoff was the last time I had dealings there...............
I’ve only been once but I was a huge fan. Roman Abramovic had his boat docked there for a bit - incredible.
I am on rightmove at the moment. Dawlish would be a fantastic place to live and I am seeing 2-bed newbuild flats at 180K, 1/2 what I paid for mine in exclusive Bromley.
I think Royston spoke about a "sizeable" house for £150k not a 2 bed flat. I suppose it depends on your definition of sizeable really. However, I already acknowledged that the South East and London were considerably more expensive.
My Grandad had a bar there. My Dad had a house, but during Mintoff's reign he made it very hard for British residents to own a property in Malta. They had to be rented out to Maltese residents at a peppercorn rent.
