I agree Zen, it is a bit worrying especially if we lose Nsiala or Nolan (or even both!). One thing Hurst did last year was to bring in high quality loan signings (especially Godfrey and Henderson) and Askey is going to have to try to match that as well as making a few permanent signings. I would think most of the players we are linked with are non-starters or false rumours put about by agents. and the reality will probably be signings out of the blue. Interesting times certainly but in modern football the trend seems to be to have a completely different team every season.

Could be a decent signing. I think Askey will play a more direct style than Hurst did and we really need a quality striker (easier said than done!) though I still have hopes Payne can step up with better service.

I don't like to be negative about new signings but this lad hardly got a look-in for a poor Oldham side last season. He is going to have to step up massively ( as Nolan and Rodman did last season) if he is to make an impact with us. At the moment I would say we have overall taken a significant step backwards from last season in terms of the quality of our squad.

Can I ask a serious question? Reading the above post about quality of signings and I'm curious as to the sort of budget your club would normally have preseason to re-arrange the squad following the usual number of releases/out of contracts. I'm guessing here but would have thought it wouldn't have been huge. The trouble you have in my opinion is that you had a really successful season last term even though you ended up still in the same league as before. I remember the people making you one of the favourites to go down rather than up and yet your players kept you in the top few all season long. That was bound to attract the sharks and some of your players were bound to go if they could get a few quid extra. As you didn't get a load of cash for them leaving it was bound to make it harder for you to afford the quality they had become for the new season. All you can do is be like at least half the league and hope that the incoming, despite their lesser pedigree, can be moulded into at least the same type of unit you have just watched get ripped apart. I myself always think there is a large slice of luck no matter how good players are perceived to be in getting a squad that gels and out performs their expected level.

We never have a massive budget and are very much debt free. Interesting twitter thread:

And his tweets in general make interesting reading.

Yes - we are very well run compared to most lower league clubs but I just get the feeling the budget could be increased a bit due to the extra money from our gates , cup runs and TV games last year as well as the reported 500K from the Conor Goldson sell-on. The sell-on sum could be greatly increased if Ryan Woods moves from Brentford. Whatever my feelings about the signings I am always happy to give any player in blue and amber my full support in the hope (like Rodman) they can prove me wrong.

It's good you are debt free and I think all clubs in the lower leagues should strive for that as well. I think we pretty much are as well and after almost going out of business altogether I would hope to stay that way. Whilst applauding that it is annoying on the other hand to have to re-build a team year on year and hope you can compete. You were one of the favourites last season to go down according to all the best judges. Not that they know much. There is a reason for that which is basically what you spend how good your squad is perceived to be. The fact that the last one out performed the expectation won't stop those same pundits from predicting your demise again. You do know in your heart of hearts that your manager can only do so much and only so often. Eventually his selections won't gel and the struggle begins again. It's not just Shrews who go like that it's at least half of the league.

I am not a believer in the big club/little club thing. For me all clubs are where they deserve to be and start with nil points each season. But, if you look at league one now there are some pretty famous names there. These are the clubs that stand far more chance of getting somebody willing to chuck a few quid their way because of the past glory. Clubs without that history hardly ever seem to attract the same attention.

You are right Greeny about the big club/little club thing - teams are where they should be. But just look at the two clubs that went up automatic last year in this league. Both Wigan and Blackburn had players like Mulgrew and Armstrong and Powell and Graham and Grigg that almost any other team in League 1 could not afford. Their managers still did a good job but it is an incredibly uneven playing field. Clubs like ours and yours will do very well to compete against the likes of Sunderland this year and I suspect we will not be near the promotion places this time but I reckon Plymouth could build on the momentum you had for a while at the end of last season.

It's yet another squad though so this coming season is anyone's guess. As said above, managers can only do the business so many times and it is always a matter of hope and prayer.

Doug Loft o_O REALLY?! <laugh><laugh><laugh> Spent 2 years here keeping the physios table warm hasn't managed to play half a season in over 3 years...<yikes> Was a decent player back in the day, but his legs have gone and his body isn't up to the rigours of full-time professional football.<doh> Good luck with that! <ok>

"With Doug we only ever saw glimpses of him because of his injury problems and it just hasn't worked out for him here," head coach John McGreal told BBC Essex."
