I've been a bit fascinated for quite a while by the reputation that Hull as a city seems to have. I visited back in 2011 for the first time, basically expected some sort of eastern Europe war zone based on what I've heard. Granted that I've mostly been to the central parts of the city, probably visited around 10-15-ish times. I've spent around 4-5 years in the UK in total, lived in Stoke for 2,5 years & London for 2 years. Visited plenty of places I think been more **** than Hull, Stoke is a fine example. It's always the first thing English people have said when they hear I follow City. "Ouff, proper ****hole that" They've very rarely visited Hull..... What do you think is the main reason? Old reputation that's just stuck in peoples mind? Actually pretty ****e? I'm aware it's hardly a paradise, but it's not that bad is it?
No. It really isn’t. It’s a good honest city. You come to Hull willing to enjoy it, it’ll embrace you like one of its own, however, you come with a chip on your shoulder, you will be chewed up and spat out. I’m immensely proud of where I’m from. Especially whilst I lived in the midlands from 2010 to March last year. My job takes me all over the country and I can say, I could name 50 towns and cities much worse without breaking into a sweat. I[emoji173]️Hull Doggidy Hey, Doggidy Ho, Doggidy Hoo Haa!
Anyone who slags a place off that they haven't visited is a ****ing half-wit, thing is the world is full of **** wits who believe everything they read and are happy to spout ****e to any other thick ****er who'll listen to them. Hulls not perfect but, anyone who can't see the beauty of the old town and it's surroundings is a ****.
Middlesbrough suffers from a similarly half witted reputation. Hull, Middlesbrough, Leeds, Manchester, Monaco, Tokyo. They all have good bits and they all have ****ty bits. Stockholm too I dare say, though I’ve never been (other than in a train that briefly paused in the station).
Speaking to many tourists in 2017, reading many national/international broadsheet reviews/reports - massively favourable. There's still a, dare-I-say-it, an ignorant low-brow 'Hull is ****' go-to summation which is usually an opinion adopted from someone else, or more specifically, something else - guides by the likes of elitist scum such as Kirsty Allsop (and that bald prick); ****ty guides which aim to funny but adopt a brogue that was considered well worn at the turn-of-the-century. Essentially, it's about slagging off people's homes, financially poorer people's homes to be precise, with the added bonus that Hull rhymes with dull. I'd take any well written, well founded criticism any day, but can anyone provide one?
To be fair, Adolfs Luftwaffe did leave it in a bit of a state, but we’ve had a tidy up since, and it’s quite an alright place now.
It depends on what you are talking about. The people are great, there’s some underrated architecture and for nights out there are much worse places. The idea that it’s ****e stems from the 70s, when it was pretty dumpy. But it isn’t anymore, nowhere near as bad as some cities.
there's bad areas, but compared to areas in places like glasgow, liverpool, manchester, birmingham and london, hull is not anywhere near as bad what so ever i think it's location is both negative and positive though this city has definetely been held back too long though, the marina and the area around it is such a unique thing, not many cities have it, but it was under developed massively until recently
Its no better or worse than many cities in the UK. There's a few better, and a lot worse. Mostly those negative opinions are given by people who have never been. In much the same way we hear people from Hull and the ER deriding other areas of the UK that they've never been to. Twas always this way. Those that travel, know, those that don't, don't know.
It’s a great place, no worse than any other City. I travel all over the UK and I’ve been to lots of places that are far worse than Hull. It’s easy for people to use a misplaced stereotype, most people that say it’s **** have never even been.
Who gives a **** what everyone else thinks.... Hull & proud!! I happily tell all the stuck up posh twats near me in Chelsea to go & visit for the culture!!
It's how people tend to be, it makes them feel better about themselves if they take a dump on someone else. And people also have a tribal mentality so they'll just follow what others say. Stick in a phrase to solidify it, have a comedy make fun of it, repeat it among themselves enough and most end up taking something as common knowledge.
Hull As A City & Hull City Supporters Have Definitely Carved Out A Reputation For Itself & Others. A Well ****ing Bloody Deserved Reputation.
Short answer: widespread ignorance and superficiality Longer answer: John Prescott personifying Hull in the national consciousness, the self-important 'rugby league stronghold' of a sport most people see as parochial and unimportant, chronically poor civic leadership and representation that over many decades has failed to deliver prosperity, inward investment or anything else of note. Of all the places I've visited with City, I have to say Watford was the worst: one of the more affluent locations, but utterly devoid of history, character, identity or passion.
