that's before you take into account that 1. the new PL deal has increased so you're getting 50m more each year since 2016-17 2. You've been in the CL 2 years on the trot so the money you earnt there has been way more than the europey league
Spurs 100% bidded for Grealish so definitely wanted him. Why didn’t they go in for him when Villa had huge money problems, £25million then would probably have got him. Delaying the bid so late has imo predictably messed up the chance to get him in.
We DOUBLED our income in 2016/17 according to official figures, due to all of the above plus higher league finishes and greater global reach. Most of it has been sunk straight back into the stadium, I have no doubt about it.
And that had to be done tbh. I just think we got the balance a little bit wrong. Spending £30-40m a season over the last 5 years instead of £4m would not have crippled the club or jeopardised the stadium imo and we may well have won something along the way.
A stadium that will also pay itself off in the future and doesn't need to be all paid off on day 1. Sponsorship, Revenue increases, renting the stadium for other sports. The stadium is part of a longer term plan. So spending now shouldn't be impacted as you are increasing revenue later on
Of those five top six clubs that have spent large amounts of cash to strengthen, at least four of them are going to be very disappointed
A few thoughts from an outsider before there is wholesale meltdown here at 1700. What if your manager and chairman did identify players early in the window and pursued these as the players that could genuinely improve the playing staff and for whatever reason these players were impossible to acquire, manager then says OK we will continue to look at alternatives, but we will only spend modest amounts on 'squad' players because I have faith in the current players and the youngsters coming through. You have a very good squad, a brilliant first XI and an excellent manager,(and a new stadium), I know it must be frustrating to sometimes be so close and yet so far, but as someone who keeps an eye from a far and is supporting a league 1 club I can assure that there are plenty of other teams who would like your problems. I read here that you don't want to be 'like Arsenal' just happy to be top 4, I venture that just 10 years ago that if i had offered to you that you could have 3 successive top 3 finishes 2 of them ahead of the goons you would have bitten my hand off, I know that progress is important, and new players do help with that, but signing players for the sake of signing players is not necessarily progress. Have a great season and enjoy your new home.
Worst kit trophy Net Spend trophy and if Inter don't beat Athletico by 4 goals on Saturday we will win the ICC Cup. We could be completing the treble in the space of a week
Thanks for this Gill, you've calmed me down a bit. I think in general this window has been a bit of a damp squib for everyone. When the two most exciting transfers are goalkeepers you know business is slow everywhere. A lot of clubs have been very busy and may well have great seasons but it remains to be seen if the cartloads of players they have brought in can adapt to the PL and gel as a team. What's also reassuring is that a number of our rivals (United & Chelsea) still have glaring deficiencies in their FIRST TEAMS that they haven't been able to address. City and Pool are the only 2 who genuinely scare me and I predict a 2-horse race between them. It is a shame that I can't see us challenging unless we throw the towel in on the domestic cups, but that's the way it'll be for the foreseeable future.
1) we also built a stadium in that time 2) turned a joke of a team (that lost 3 times to west ham, 2 times to arsenal, City, Liverpool and Chelsea conceding 28 goals and scoring 3 in those 11 games.) into the team that we have now. 3) To understand where we are we should look at a longer period of time. Enic spend money and keep us secure. Since Redknapp arrived (the start of our second stage of improvement after the Jol years) we have spent approx £730m. That is not insignificant.
love the way you address him as Gill, as if he's a woman named Gill, rather than a Gillingham fan. Not sure Ashford will appreciate that
Wow...you kind of missed the point a bit there CK! We have spent MORE than we have MADE in sales...that was the point. And this has been the case in 14 out of the 17 seasons that Levy has been the Chairman. The idea that we do not spend is not true. We have spent around £470m since 2012/13. I know you do not agree, like most on here...but imho there is a massive over reaction going on. Levy and Pochettino deserve a bit of trust in my opinion.
A stadium that should pay for itself over time and also should have had a whopping naming rights deal by now. If we don't kick on and we lose what is effectively a once in a lifetime squad (for Spurs at least. This is the best team we've had in my lifetime) will you be happy saying we put the pressure on a couple of times and we have a nice stadium our players play in each week before finishing 6th and not winning anything? I guess some of us here either have higher aspirations or are more prone to speculating in order to achieve. To dare is to do. We are not DARING.
poch obviously does deserve trust and i don't think anyone is criticising poch.... Levy on the other hand..........
