Bristol City defender Bailey Wright and goalkeeper Frank Fielding are edging closer to returns after injuries.

The Robins will bid to end their four-match winless run when Sheffield Wednesday visit Ashton Gate on Sunday.

The Owls welcome back midfielder Barry Bannan after suspension, but will still be without Marco Matias (hamstring).

Daniel Pudil (nose) and Ash Baker (leg) may be fit, but long-term absentees Gary Hooper, Sam Winnall, Kieran Lee and Joost van Aken all remain out.

    Match facts
    • Bristol City are unbeaten in seven home league matches against Sheffield Wednesday (W3 D4).
    • Sheffield Wednesday have not kept an away clean sheet at Bristol City in a league match in their last 20 attempts - they last achieved this in a 1-0 win in May 1921.
    • After a run of four straight wins, Bristol City are winless in their last four Championship games (D2 L2).
    • Sheffield Wednesday have both scored and conceded in each of their last eight Championship games (W4 D3 L1).
    • No Championship side has scored more goals from corners this season than Bristol City (4, level with Brentford and Reading).
    • Sheffield Wednesday's Adam Reach has scored in his last two Championship games. Only once has he ever scored in three in a row in the English leagues (November 2017).

Sky's Pruton predicts a 2-2 draw, what do you think ?

    Prutton's prediction

Bristol City are now four without a win after their goalless draw at Rotherham in midweek, but the closeness of the Championship at the moment means they head into the weekend just a point off the play-offs.

Sheffield Wednesday will be gutted with how they let the game slip so late on against West Brom, and they know they should have taken all three points. Draw for me.

    David Prutton predicts: 2-2

Report: Bristol City 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday

City dominance proved not to be enough as two goals in as many minutes helped Sheffield Wednesday to a 2-1 win at Ashton Gate.

There were strong calls for offside with Lucas João’s’ first, but he rifled past Niki Mäenpää for Wednesday’s second only minutes later.

Matty Taylor halved the scores when he dispatched a confident penalty but Lee Johnson’s side couldn’t force a late equaliser.

City had their chances, notably Lloyd Kelly striking the post and Famara Diédhiou forcing a close-range save from Cameron Dawson, when one-on-one in the first half.

The Robins remained confident with the scores even at the break but the Owls looked to take the sails out of their winds with two goals in as many minutes, before City tried to fight back late on.

Johnson named three changes to his starting XI with returns for Taylor and Jamie Paterson, as well as Chelsea loanee Jay Dasilva.

And the home side enjoyed more of the play in the early exchanges, underneath the October sunshine, after Niki Mäenpää came to the rescue to prevent an early scare.

They were the first to cause trouble when Barry Bannan found the run of Adam Reach. Kelly was beaten by the flight of the ball, but Mäenpää was off his line in a flash to stop the Sheffield Wednesday man’s shot when one-on-one.

    CITY ENJOY POSSESSION
At the other end, City had a great chance to open the scoring themselves when Diédhiou found himself in acres of space with only Cameron Dawson to beat. Josh Brownhill’s deflected pass pinged its way invitingly into the path of the Senegal striker, but his shot was blocked by the Owls keeper.

Only the post would prevent an attack-minded City afterwards as Kelly was denied with a low shot across the six-yard box, before Nathan Baker and Adam Webster saw shots blocked.

Kelly almost picked out the advancing Diédhiou with a whipped cross from the left but Dawson was quick off the blocks to clear the ball, with the shotstopper alert to keep out Paterson’s long-range effort.

Despite the home side being on top, the visitors had one final chance before the break, with Mäenpää blocking a long-range strike from Reach. The away side kept up the pressure with the resulting corner, but João glanced a header wide when he looked odds-on to nod Wednesday ahead.

The host’s pressure continued after the break though, who were eager to find a way into a higher gear. Taylor turned in the box but saw a shot blocked, with Brownhill’s follow-up effort causing the Owls no threat and Daniel Pudil was well-placed to steer the ball away when Taylor looked set to meet a teasing cross from Dasilva.

    WEDNESDAY'S QUICK-FIRE DOUBLE
But Wednesday took the lead through a route-one pass, despite strong appeals for an offside flag. It came from long pump down field from Dawson and Baker couldn’t do enough to shield the ball from João, who was on hand to guide the ball past Mäenpää.

And City were 2-0 down moments later, when João struck again. His first shot inside the City area was blocked, but he made the most of the rebound, firing the ball beyond Mäenpää to double the Owls lead.

City were in shock but had time in their favour to prevent the game getting away from them.

Paterson went close when he made the most of Baker’s towering header but his shot went straight into the grateful arms of Dawson, before the keeper saw another effort from City’s number 20 sail wide.

Maybe a third Wednesday goal would have killed the contest and Fernando Forestieri went within an inch of guiding the ball into the City net, but he couldn’t latch onto a cross, before Brownhill blocked a close-range effort from defender Michael Hector.

    CITY FIGHT UNTIL THE END
City soaked up the pressure though and with substitutes Callum O’Dowda, Marley Watkins and Andreas Weimann on the field, they were soon back on the attack.

Dasilva showed his tricks to advance down the left and found O’Dowda lurking just inside the penalty area. His pass found the Republic of Ireland international who was bundled over immediately, leaving referee Andy Davies with no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Taylor who hit the ball hard and confidently down the middle, to reduce the deficit with his second goal of the campaign.

City threw themselves forward in an effort to force an equaliser but Joh Luhukay’s side held on to claim the points.

The result sees City move to 13th in the Sky Bet Championship.

Possession doesn't win games unfortunately. I thought we were poor yet again.

And we still have major issues where our highly paid footballers can't find a colleague with a 5 yard pass.

'We will regroup and evaluate' - Johnson
    Sunday, October 7th 2018

Lee Johnson's side fell to a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday despite having the lion's share of possession.

The Owls scored two goals in quick succession - the first from an offside position - although Matty Taylor's penalty halved the deficit as City fought to earn a point.

They were dominant but couldn't force a late equaliser as domestic football now takes a two-week break.

The 2-1 result left Johnson "frustrated" but the group will assess the areas which need improving over the coming fortnight, as well as shine light on the positive parts to their game.

"It’s my job to build the players back up as quickly as possible," he told BCTV.

"I thought there were a lot of good parts to our play today but we didn’t take our chances early enough when we created very good ones. Without question, the linesman has cost us the first goal and it does get frustrating when you work hard all week on a gameplan and a sub-standard linesman has cost us with a decision that was clear to all was three yards offside."

"I thought there were a lot of good parts to our play today but we didn’t take our chances enough."

"It’s a passionate business we’re in and this game, if we had won, would have put us in the top six. We’re only three points off that but I know naturally, people will get frustrated even though we’re a new team and that’s fair enough.

"I wanted the win because you know the statisticians will come out and say that’s no wins in five games but if we had won it’s five wins in ten. I have to deal with it and it's the same for the players. It’s now up to us to regroup and evaluate the first set of games.

"There are still a lot of points to play for and we showed a lot of good examples of our good play and hopefully that will come again."

The head coach added: "We’re not a million miles away from performing well. We can go on a run and be ready to do that, come back rested, restored and bright ready for the Brentford game."

City have sold their entire allocation for the trip to London in two weeks' time.

Only saw the second half but wow that was poor.
    Poor passing
    Poor control
Diedhiou can only run at a jogging pace
Sheffield’s first goal was virtually scored by ourselves.
Their second happened whilst we seemed to be still debating who was at fault for their first.
We did put in some effort at the end but it was too little too late - and too poor.
A bad day at the office.

Shocking defending yesterday, what annoyed me was I thought we were decent first half, if only we scored from them 3 great chances we had earlier, couldn't believe how bad we were in the second half, Sheffield Wednesday were pretty poor too.

5 games without a win, I really hope it's not the start of another amazing run like the past 3 years

Two critical comments from a single post about Diedhou leave me questioning his ability at this level and ask why he is even allowed to start. One reply said he's unable to jog at totally unfit levels and yet still gets selected above others on the bench and my biggest concern is that not only has he lost the plot but rather appears to have a belief that he is our best player which seemingly allows him to wander around the pitch picking his nose. I can't really explain why but I have never latched on to his hype and believe he will be gone somewhere else sooner rather than later. Frankly I think he has little value to us either as a player or a potential source of income in the transfer market and perhaps a return to France would be his best bet. Sorry just an opinion.
