Yes, that's right. But there have been many times when we have been surrendering the ball too easily, when we need to keep it to calm the game down when the opposition have had long minutes of pressure on us. Need to improve this, just seen Steve has said the same again in his post match interview, as he did after SW.

Dean Smith obviously watched a different game than most of us - whilst they had the majority of possession, their strilers really hit a brick wall when it came to our defence.....

QPR winger Pawel Wszolek (far left) scored in the league for the first time since March
Queens Park Rangers continued their fine form in the Championship by beating Aston Villa at Loftus Road to record their fourth win in a five-match unbeaten run.

After Jack Grealish had hit the post with a long-range free-kick for the visitors, Pawel Wszolek put the R's ahead seven minutes before the break with an emphatic finish off the underside of the bar.

Tammy Abraham deflected a free-kick wide after the break and Rangers keeper Joe Lumley denied Yannick Bolasie with a low stop as Villa sought an equaliser.

But the hosts survived pressure in the second half to move up to seventh in the table, one point off the play-offs, while Villa have won just one of their past seven games.

After tasting victory in his first game in charge against Swansea, Dean Smith has now seen his Villa side fall to back-to-back defeats and slip to 16th, six points off the top six before the rest of the weekend's fixtures.

Both sides had chances in a lively opening quarter of an hour, with John McGinn and Grealish firing wide and Luke Freeman and Eberechi Eze testing Villa keeper Orjan Nyland.

The hosts took the lead when the Villa defence momentarily switched off, with Wszolek running between James Chester and Neil Taylor to latch on to Geoff Cameron's lofted through ball and power in from 14 yards out.

Toni Leistner and Angel Rangel put in crucial blocks to help secure a third successive clean sheet for Steve McClaren's side, who have recovered remarkably after losing their first four games of the season.

    QPR manager Steve McClaren:

"I am so proud of the players and the staff. It has been a tough week and we have got three wins and three clean sheets.

"We had to win a big game at home and this was it. We needed to score first and defend the box for our lives to hold on.

"The players showed great character and it is a platform in terms of what we can do. We need to take advantage and not let things slip."

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith told BBC WM:

"We were good tonight and created some big chances. We were the aggressors throughout the game.

"It is frustrating because we gave a poor goal away and did not make the most of our opportunities.

"We gave it everything and on another day we win that game 3-0. Sometimes it is small margins which separate you.

"The spirit was there for all to see and I won't get too downhearted about it because the players are showing me what good players they are."

Character, commitment, spirit, backbone, workrate, effort and energy. Is this QPR we're praising? What a total sea-change from August when we looked like a rudderless collection of shirkers. Schteeve took a barrel-load of abuse and looked to be heading for the shortest managerial stay since Tommy Doc but he's somehow worked his spell and produced a team that is a proper team, we may not be the most gifted in this division but you won't find a more together team that battles for every ball and is clearly greater than the sum of it's parts. Makes you proud to be an R's fan and it's a long time since we've had such a feelgood factor, so thank you Schteeve and long may it continue...<ok>

Verily, we are the London version of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

Didier Deschamps’ France won the World Cup with less than 50% possession.

We are riding the crest of the wave, the epitome of the emerging zeitgeist, Hair Island’s QPR are truly modern.

I still don’t fancy us against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City though (average 65% possession last season).

City make quite good use of their possession though, don't they? Wednesday and Villa barely landed a blow with theirs.

    Rangel isn't on loan Col.

He is on a short term contract that expires on 31/1/19. I assume that we can extend that even with the January transfer embargo.

I agree with all of that Col, but it was still the LEAST effective I've seen him. That is how highly I rate him!

The free kicks that he won for us in the second half were absolutely priceless & relieved the pressure. It was a very mature performance from him.

Dare I say that Grealish could learn from Eze & play further up the pitch where he might cause problems, instead of alongside his centre halves? Eze, in the main, receives the ball in an area where he can cause problems.

Their manager came across as ungracious and very bitter towards us in his post match interview. The game last night reminded me of the play-off final against Derby. Their manager that day was Steve McClaren. After the game he kept his players out on the pitch to applaud the QPR players as they went up to lift the trophy. His post match comment was ... '' Sometimes in football, you don't always get what you deserve. ''

    Totally this.
How many “old buggers” have we taken in that have proven more than their perceived worth when they turned up? Dunne, Nelson, Hill.
    I’m liking Rangel’s attitude ALOT

I noticed that Cameron disappeared down the tunnel as soon as he was subbed so it could be that our current best XI is about to get disrupted. But if Scowen can turn in the kind of hugely impressive performance he managed for 25 minutes last night then all will be well at least in terms of really wanting to play. Interestingly, I also noticed that Luongo moved to the holding role once Cameron went off and he started to get very negative in his play as a result.

Until New Year on a short contract.... although there is a lot of rumours that he had or will sign a longer contract...i.e. till the end of the season.

    Good business imho

Sounds like a hamstring injury unfortunately.

QPR will assess a hamstring injury Geoff Cameron picked up against Aston Villa.

The on-loan Stoke midfielder, 33, limped off midway through the second half of Rangers’ 1-0 win at Loftus Road on Friday evening.

The problem did not appear to be serious and manager Steve McClaren is hopeful Cameron will be available for next Saturday’s game at Blackburn.

“He’s got a little tight hamstring. We hope it’s not too serious,” McClaren said.

Meanwhile, McClaren has described Angel Rangel as “the signing of the season” because of the veteran defender’s performances since arriving at the club.
