... get the boot. After an initial impact the team suffered humiliating defeats, a lack of confidence and arguments with the management. Sounds familiar doesn't it. I doubt either of them could manage a league club these days. Neither have much empathy or humility.
Are those qualities that the average football club owner prioritises these days? Its all about the impacts to the brand and the finances these days
The Republic have had an awful run of results and as football is driven by a results culture it's no surprise these two have gone. What is surprising is they've lasted this long as if you believe media stories it's hardly been a match made in heaven between them and their squad.
That was my first thought when I saw O'Neill and Keane named as the management team. I'm just surprised they had the early success they had. And Smug's last paragraph is spot on.
As far as recent managers go Mon was, after Dour Dave, by far the biggest let down, amazes me how these blokes keep getting employed in any capacity after their records here.
MON was a terrible appointment for us, and again I was shot down by many on here when I said so. I remember the Celtic fans I know (I live in Fife) continually moaning about the awful negative football he served up there, and whilst he had some success up here, he got poor backing from their fans. The football he served up at SAFC is by far the worst I witnessed in my lifetime, yet the pundits still claim he’s a great manager. It was so bad I stopped attending and threw my season ticket book at the dugout!! He was a horrible person as well (IMHO). Rant over. Bart
On a side note, do you have to be an ex-Sunderland manager to manage RoI? There's the leaving pair, and the "runners" list includes Mick McCarthy, Steve Bruce and Sam Allardyce
Sadly Eire don't have a decent squad at the mo, so plenty of struggles for them the next few years. MM has set himself up as a target yet again. Good luck to him if he gets it. He has as much chance of qualifying for anything as he has of winning "Prettiest Nose of the Year" or "Best Irish Accent Award" x
At least, with Mick, you'll get some funny interviews ... always has some good one liners. MON seems to have little love for the game and Keane is just playing a character these days.
