Very interesting 2YO race at Yarmouth today. The 2.45 is a Class 3 contest over 6F and it was won last season by John Gosden's Legends Of War. There was talk of the Coventry for Legends Of War in the aftermath of an impressive win but ultimately it was Calyx who went on to land the Royal Ascot contest despite Teddy Grimthorpe's statement that they would give him more time and perhaps re-appear at the Newmarket July meeting.

Gosden is represented again this season and it is Kingman colt Deverell who has been set the task of landing the Yarmouth race this time around. Early betting suggests that Deverell is not fancied though with a price of 6/1 for a Gosden inmate looking a huge negative.

Hot favourite is Godolphin's Path Of Thunder. Charlie Appleby's son of 2000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder has that big advantage of experience. 3rd on his debut over 5F, the extra furlong might help now that he has a run under his belt. However, that was only a 4 horse race and he was beaten more than 5 lengths in 3rd, with the other Godolphin horse beaten as 2/5 Fav for Saeed Bin Suroor. With Path Of Thunder odds-on today, he does not appeal to me as a bet at all.

William Haggas is represented by St Ives, an unraced son of Cable Bay and while not costing a fortune at 90 Grand, the stable are always worth watching with their newcomers.

Saeed bin Suroor actually serves up opposition to the favourite with Historic, a Shamardal newcomer whose odds vary quite a bit across the boards.

Perhaps the most intriguing runner is Michael Bell's Maxi Boy. The trainer had a five timer recently and this 380,000 Guineas colt is a son of Oasis Dream. Ryan Moore has been booked to ride, so presumably a good show is expected. Generally 4/1 and if you twist my arm I would probably go with him but it's a guessing game for me as to whether take him, or chance Gosden's Deverell to defy the market vibes against a short looking favourite.

Very odd indeed. From a family of winners at around a mile and it will certainly be stretching this ones stamina by running in a bumper. I wonder what happened to him whilst at Godolphin, they purchased him as a yearling for 150,000 but moved him on a mere 13 months later for a paltry 2,000. 18 months later he arrives at the track. The dam was a maiden who has produced 4 winners on the flat and while he is in decent hands and has the services of the best jockey he can run without having my pension on board.
I often go down the sales pages looking at the unraced Godolphins for possible bumper winners but this one would have come up short in the stamina stakes for me.
Major Dundee to hold off the Irish raider for me.

West To Criossgales 7 45 south , charlie pogson isn’t a high profile trainer by any measure , but he is effective as opposed to sadik and others , his horses do win now and then , usually in clusters as is the norm with small stables .
His last two runners have both won , sunday and yesterday , neither ridden by his son this time , this one tonight is stayer , but first run after a break at 2.4 miles might well suit , southwell is pogsons favourite track , richard johnson booked, only an odds on FOB horse to beat !, was 6/1 last night ,good luck

ps Look out for Sir Will in the 6 15 , trying chasing again , if he clicks could lead these a merry dance , southwell fences are forgiving !!

A very interesting GOFFS sales starts today with all the Grech and Parkin horses being sold. Be very interesting to see where they end up. Also looking at the catalogue (tomorrows) I see Jenkins and Rather Be both going through the sales ring

Stick as you once quoted ‘the best horse you never bought’ looks good to add to his winning tally today

A lot of weight but I would say so. After today he is off to the US to be prepared for the G1 AP Smithwick at Saratoga.

A hot maiden for the seaside course but to be fair Cecil often started a good horse there. Have been waiting for Maxi Boy for sometime. He’s been ridden by a variety of jockeys on the gallops and even Dettori had his leg over him a few weeks back.
I’m sure many of today’s trainers thought they were entering for an ordinary maiden whereas it could be more than that. Probably one to watch.

50 grand race at Ayr today and the pot hunters are out - just one northern trainer represented. The most likely winner is Shenanigans but at around the 5/4 mark makes little appeal, however With Bells yard in such good order I will risk a small stake on PLAIT 4.05 David Allan is an interesting jockey booking.

Mrs Bell's filly looks as if she's looking for some black type. Owned by Juddmonte until the December Sales and with one run, one win, purchased by and transferred to her husband's stable. Like many Juddmontes beautifully bred (grandam is Wince) and I'd see her as a potential foundation mare. Sighted on the gallops doing a piece of solitary work last Saturday. Nice looking filly that's for sure.

Let that be a warning to you all. 150,000 gns to £2,000 in one calendar year. Race horse ownership is not all about having celebratory drinks with The Lieutenant in the ‘Owners and Trainers Bar’, gallivanting with Princess Camilla on the victory plinth and exchanging witty repartee with Francesca and Luke after a big win. It can also involve misery, heartache and financial ruin.

Re that Major Dundee I see he is still owned by Alan King who paid £30,000 for him. One wonders if he is looking to employ that old trick of winning a bumper easily, when trained to the absolute minute, and then look to sell him to an existing owner within the yard for big bucks. However, that is only a mere guess.

The Lieutenant has got loads, and I do mean loads, going through the sales ring tomorrow. As well as these 2 (and I find Rather Be fascinating. Only a few months ago, approaching the 4th last in the BetVictor, he appeared on the cusp on greatness. However, since being brought down at that obstacle his form has collapsed. New surroundings could rejuvenate him) other ex-inmates being sold tomorrow include Chaparral Prince, Rich Richtea’s Palixandre, Turtle Wars, Lust For Glory (another mare who at one point looked on the cusp of being something special), Claimantakingforgan (see other thread), Lough Derg Spirit, Mr Whipped, River Wlyde and Dieu Benisse.

I was expecting to see loads of posts about Vosne Romanee, ahead of his Warwick run, but what's occuring?!? Ain't seen one! I thought his fan club on here was almost as big as mine!

Re the owners, by the way, I see the animal that they bought from Princess Camilla has mutiple entries over the big 'uns this weekend. Interesting...

I don't bet at Ayr very often but I was looking at the Mark Johnston horse Fred in the 2YO race that opens the card. By Frankel out of Deirdre, a mare trained by Gosden in her day and all her offspring have had single word names of boys or girls, with her latest offspring being called Norma.

Fred is entered in the Derby and while he is not my favourite sire for 3YO prospects, some of his progeny score first time out and for me the 6F today need not be a worry. Fred cost 145,000 Guineas and has been reported as pleasing connections. It's guesswork obviously and the money in the race has been for the Oasis Dream colt Mellad from the Fahey yard and he cost about the same as Fred.

I couldn't resist a small bet on Fred, if nothing else for the opportunity to shout Yabba, Dabba, Doo should he prevail.

In Shenanigans race I felt Vivianite had a chance. On earlier form she has plenty to find with the favourite but I thought Vivianite did quite well last time out when 3rd in a Listed race where she was rated a stone and 15 lbs behind the fillies who were first and second but she ran a career best there if we can believe the figures and she has not been with trainer Archie Watson for long, having been with Mick Halford in Ireland. Up in trip now and a year younger than the favourite I felt she was a bit better value than the normal Varian hotpot who is talented enough but not exactly a win machine.

    2.00 Ayr Fred 5/2

    4.05 Ayr Vivianite 7/2

Kempton 6.25 Nahham very interested to see how this one gets on today in an open contest, handicapping for the first time, but draw not ideal.

Yarmouth 3.15 The Resdev Way looks worth a go to me.

Ayr 2.30, Class 6 6f, just my type of race; Jessie Allan could be a good one, based on course form? Let's see.

2.55 Warwick, I'm thinking Atlantic Storm might upset things, with Kereman shooting up the weights; I wonder?

Good Luck to all who play.

Fergal O'Brien has just got a 4YO Shirocco gelding, called Alpine Rock, for as little as 800 gns - and the dam was Listed placed! Only raced, to date, in the PTP field.
