Me too. It sounds as though we are heading for the abyss. Players are being sold off to make up some of the extra losses. But those losses are going to continue next season unless we are promoted. In spite of everything we know about Evans I’m surprised that relegation hasn’t come as any kind of a wake up call.
I think we are all getting quite skilled in expectation management B A, these years of false dawns and failure have taken their toll unfortunately, the question is this, what will it take to rouse this hopeless owner of ours to take this Club by the scruff of the neck and breathe the life back into it ? Decline leading to relegation hasn't worked, the Lambert factor is fragile to say the least and a bad start to the coming season could easily break it, we need players all over the pitch but very few appear while 7 leave, so what's it going to take ?
I'm not concerned about transfer fees paid. Even with our frugal owner, we'd still be one of the top payers in that league, so will still be able to attract a high calibre of (L1) players who are out of contract (which i'm sure there'd be plenty of).
Somewhat cynically, it’s no real surprise that Marcus Evans is continuing in his minimal investment policy and managed decline of this club. Unfortunately, the circumstances of our relegation means that we are unable to spend the millions some fans think we need to spend, what with the wage restrictions placed on relegated sides. Having said that, Rotherham have just broken their transfer record for a striker (albeit it at £500k) and we’ve shifted a lot of deadwood off the wage bill. So it appears we are poised to give our highly touted youth players a chance. Whether they can step up and perform consistently, as well as helping to mitigate the declining performances of senior players around them, remains to be seen. Defence remains my biggest concern. If Lambert and Evans believes a declining Chambers, the solid Nsiala, and two highly rated, but relatively untested, youngsters will do enough at centre back over this slog of a season, then fair enough. Where we certainly lack is options at full back. Emmanuel has performed relatively well at this level, although was in and out of a below average Shrewsbury side last season. He still needs competition. I don’t think Kenlock is good enough, certainly at a Championship standard, and will need competition. Lambert says that 23 players is too many for a squad. Given that we will be challenging in up to four trophies (in theory), that we have a terrible record with injuries, and we will be playing over the international break, I think we need the options. If he wants to get rid any more players, look at the midfield where we are more than well stocked. Finally, a more longer term concern is that our squad starts to resemble a team that could be too good for League One, but not good enough for the Championship. So we could be in risk of becoming a yo-yo club between Championship and League One levels.
Let's be absolutely clear about one thing, there are absolutely no regulatory restrictions coming into play, we are miles below the threshold for that. Managed decline is bang on.
We've been over this loads on this forum already - with all the exceptions and allowances even before net transfer income, we're nowhere near the threshold for this season coming.
Rumours that Webster could be on the move for £30m with Town getting a £3m-£6m cut. Nice as the £6m or whatever would be, that surely is a sign that the buy to sell policy just costs us money.
I highly doubt Webster will leave for £30m, that’s a ridiculous fee, but I guess it’s another damning indictment of how crazy the transfer market is in football, so won’t be overly surprised if he leaves for around £20m or more. This talk, and his progress over the course of last season, validates his decision to move to Bristol City (which some of us understandably saw as a sideways move, at the time). At Bristol, he was playing a style of football that we haven’t seen our club play for several years and he clearly benefitted under that system. Good luck to the guy.
The buy to sell policy is just a series of short term financial fixes which ultimately lead to players being worth huge money after they leave PR, so the next Club gets the full financial benefit and not us, piss ups and breweries come to mind.
I’ve said it before, but it really does mystify how Evans has been so successful with his other businesses.
You and me both BA, there must be huge money to be made out of selling event tickets because he hasn't got a clue about running a football Club.
Well, first of all, he was at Cambridge, which in those days opened up all sorts of doors that didn't even exist to the rest of us. I think the answer is that he was a 'First Mover', one of the first into corporate hospitality. If there were not so many other established football clubs then we might be faring a bit better. He runs a primary business that operates with no real stock, no real equipment, no real premises. Basically in the position he found himself in a license to print money. It would be the equivalent of you or I coming along to sell match day tickets and throwing in a stay at the Novotel and a meal and a glass of wine to sell all the the tickets on at £1000 a pop. Town fans are not that dumb (or loaded) but wealthy people and corporations trying to keep their executives happy are often that dumb - and particularly in Thatcher's 80s it was fashionable to be a dickhead and show off.
Seeing what’s going on in politics at the moment, that’s probably all you need to know! As Rush would say “plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose”

I know a Bury fan and he said mayor is head and shoulders their best player. At 28 he’s not exactly going to be getting any better and he’s still only at this Lower league level but if he’s at his peak now and it’s well above average for this level that’s good to go for me. Wingers are not something we are blessed with. If this deal comes off I think it would be very good news for us in the short to medium term ie over the next 2-3 seasons.
Oh...another decent payer slips through our fingers. If they’re choosing Plymouth over us now that’s pretty depressing...
