Off Topic Another 12 dead in America

Would love to see Vietnam (and Cambodia). Unfortunately unable to fly long distances and probably wouldn’t get insurance. A good series about cooking just been on. Great street food scenes. Funny how in a communist country there are people selling stuff, all off the cuff and chaotic, whereas here in this country it is regulated, councils objecting to a table and chairs on a pedestrianised street and A boards and there are street food “festivals” with all sorts of restrictions and street food restaurants (surely an oxymoron).

 

If you have a house on a street then the majority have some shop/cafe or canteen-style eating place. Most people here who are working have a 2nd or 3rd job, as still the government companies pay is low. As you say not much is regulated, people just open a business and get on with it.

Cottage industry is thriving here, and the people do work hard. What they can deliver by motorbike has to be seen to believe.

 

Which is exactly the reason nothing ever happens. People start making daft comparisons and pointless analogies, which detracts from the original argument until it "blows over". It'll die down until another shooting occurs, they chuck out thoughts and prayers (because as we all know, that really helps the family of the dead knowing that somebody somewhere is kneeling and thinking about doing something, as opposed to actually doing something) and it's gone.

America is being shot to ****; good, innocent people are being killed and the main reason is such easy access to firearms, something that could be remedied were the government not so deep in the NRA's pocket.

I'm ****ing sick of it, I really am. They've got absolutely no excuse anymore. If it was happening here and the government was so apathetic, there'd be hell on.

 

I get your sentiment but my youngest lad is very law abiding, so is his Uncle-in-law, however I couldn’t see either of them happily handing over their guns. They both ‘carry’ wherever they go, and if some loony opened up in their vicinity they wouldn’t last very long!

 

i did mean the topic on this thread rather than generally, but i mostly agree. australia did it right, but to me it's like the usa has things too deeply embedded in its history and its soul for them to be removed, and those things include religion and guns. a part of the reason i brought up the abortion thing was because others had brought it up elsewhere, if not necessarily on here. the scale of abortions horrified me when i first saw it as i didn't expect it to be remotely near the figures i found, and while i accept the current uk (and us) laws as an adequate compromise balancing two bad situations, i can understand how some people view abortion (at least during some stages of pregnancy) as akin to murder.

but - annually - 11,000 homicides, 21,000 suicides just with firearms, 45,000 suicides in all, 37,000+ road deaths, 900,000+ abortions. rate per head of population is more telling, of course. and on that point, i note that jamaica has one of the highest homicide rates and one of the lowest suicide rates.

 

Thoughts are a courtesy, but prayer is very effective. We could certainly use a lot more of it.
