We also had the worst of the conditions to deal with. When we had the wind in our backs in the first half the sun was out. 2nd half, when it was in our faces it was pissing down so the players had the driving rain in their faces. Not an excuse but I can't think of a worse team to play when the conditions are like that.
If we cannot get into their half may not mater who is in goal, I am more concerned about some other Liverpool players
We're hardly afraid to commit bodies forward. We play three CBs, but our wingbacks play far up the pitch, and Romeu was honestly a bit too far forward at times for my liking.
Or again, beef up the quality of attack so you can score some goals without having to play so aggressively. Our defense is without doubt pretty bad, but IMO it’s not *that* hopeless. The problem is us being below standard on both sides of the pitch.
Wasn’t going to mention the weather but it played a big role today. Up until the goal Final Score said we were doing very very well.
You’ve made a good point and I understand your original post and I’d like to think of the possible, but I’m really concerned that this whole squad has got those who want away, those who are not PL standard, those who will be ok but not for 37 games and those who might shine but not enough of them. Third manager in 2 years and yet ?
There is so much truth in the opening sentiments of this post. It was a shock to see the likes of Vestergaard and Stephens in the starting eleven when I had expected both to have been shunted out by the beginning in July. They really had no lace in a Premier League side after January. The signing of Adams will come good. From a forward point of view, you can see goals coming rom this team which you could not see from the earlier line ups under Pellingrino and Hughes. I would have liked to have seen Long featured but the biggest issue for me was that the squad did not receive more of an overhaul. I had anticipated seeing about five new faces starting in the opening fixture for 19/20 and I genuinely believed that we would have offloaded far more players to make way for a refreshed squad. Interesting that the exclusion of Elynoussi and Hoedt probably spells that they are likely to be shunted out but I am surprised that Stuart Armstrong, Cedric, Carillo, Stephens, Vestergaard, Boufal, Forster and Lemina are still here. That is ten players I would have expected to gave been moved on and who could have provided funds for at least another 3-4 players to bring in the necessary quality that is missing. We should have been looking to get rid of them in January. It is a poor excuse that they are still here in August. I saw the squad being seriously rebuilt in the summer and today's line up is both a surprise and a disappointment., Don't think the result should have come as a surprise as so many of these players have been squad players at best over the last few seasons. A root and branch rebuilding exercise should have been out in place in January. I still don't think we will get relegated but I do think this may jeopardise the kind if expansive football Ralph wanted to introduce. Still stuck with a central three in defence who are unreliable.
Too late for me. I was all set for a nice victory brunch at the hipster joint by my house. Or at least a mediocre draw Chipotle burrito. Now I'm just going to angrily mow my lawn..
Hardly surprised that we lost given that we had a **** defence last season and it's the same one as previous. The midfield pairing looked light (as l wrote before kickoff). What is surprising is the size of the loss, expected it to be by the odd goal. I have been surprised by the euphoria expressed on here about our transfer dealings over the Summer. That we failed to address the critical issue of at least one CB (the kid we loaned in is a plaster to cover a deep wound) and bought more attackers is not what l was expecting. Still time to offload the freeloaders to overseas clubs and reduce the overhead, but overall this result shows us we will struggle to keep clean sheets at least until January when we can look to get a CB.A finish between 14-16 is what l thought before today, still think that is achievable.
One thing that I have learned over the years, opening day results are rarely an indication of that way a season will pan out and are notoriously unpredictable. Perspective is needed at this time I think.
Excellent post, if this form continues into September we’re in big trouble because as you say, simply too many assets of dubious and pretty worthless PL value. Really not looking forward to the next few games now.
Going to forget about this game. Off out soon to watch the new movie, The Kitchen, then out for dinner with my wife, to celebrate our anniversary UTS
If we play 2 cb we can add a boufal or armstrong to the mix else yes we get bodies forward but its people like romeu in an advanced positions where he is hopeless. I dont rate JWP finding himself in a no 10 positon either he is far too slow of thought to find the forward pass. The bodies that are going forward are not good enough.
Yes indeed, correct, a balanced view is required. Unfortunately after a result like that all I can say is Bollocks I hate footy.
So when do you think we will be relegated RH will be gone by the next transfer window , because he has been lied to ref money to buy players .
