He would get the place rocking and attract the media but he is always likely to fall out with people including the owners and just walk out. On balance, I'd take him over some of the journeymen and the inexperienced KP that have been put forward.
Agree bout your first choice but not the second, sentiment is no criteria, I would prefer Stockdale on that score.
I'm hoping for an announcement over the weekend or Monday to give the new man the whole week with the team. Wonder if they will in their own back room team or keep who is there?
Whilst it worked the first time with him I can't see it being a success as the players we have now have very limited ability and I don't think Roy Keane could handle them getting the basics wrong time and time again.
Well of course it worked first time around . Did you see how much he spent? By the team he left he had spent over 70m mainly on dross. 70m a decade ago! Let that sink in. The only player of any consequence that he brought in was evans and he was a loan. Were it not for short we would have sunk like a stone under the weight of over 60m that short kindly wrote off. Then there was the unsustainable wages for that dross year on year. People seem to attribute great managerial acumen to him. He was a cheque book manager pure and simple. We were only just in the top 10 by the time the first window came in ( results werent that good ) and then he spent 10m. In those days that was huge money in the championship. He made no difference to Ipswich, he in fact made them worse and nearly crippled them financially. So much for his motivational skills, discipline and presence
My worry is who will fancy the job whilst we are in limbo or until this new investment is resolved. Would a new potential Manager not want this resolved before signing up? Just another negative thought sorry.
Yeah, he's got plenty of experience but so have many other coaches who, I'm sure, would be equally as passionate. I don't see that there's any evidence to suggest he's any more tactically competent than Jack Ross. I get it from the sentimental angle, it would be great to see a club legend get us back in the big time, I just don't see anything on the technical/tactical side to suggest he'd be a better manager than any of the other candidates. How many times to managers go back to the clubs that they made their names at as players and succeed? It's not many.
His dealings in the transfer market were a mixed bag but I'd put Malbranque, Edwards and Bardsley (for longevity) into his good signings. Personally I was happy with the contributions of Connolly, Gordon, Jones, Richardson, Reid and Cissé as well.
Rationally, I completely agree with all of this. But wouldn't it be a typical Sunderland thing to happen if we pass on him and he goes elsewhere to have an outstanding managerial career.
To fit in with the club our new manager is Shrödinger Well he is and isn't at the same tme. And fits in with everyone here who agrees and disagrees who should be manager. Problem solved
Absolutely agree. He didn’t agree the fees and wages that was whichever reprobate Short had in place at the time. I loved Keane first time around, and did suggest him back around the time we got Grayson, but the time has passed and he’s a no now. I don’t class him as a chequebook gaffer though, we spent money trying to step up a level and every player you’ve listed there was a level up. He did a good job for us, at that time.
I hadn't heard of him, but reading about him, and his credentials, gives me the impression that 'he's the one' If Donald does what's best for our long term future he'll get it, I hope.
