I can’t help myself, it’s just superstition, but let’s get it on for my girl before we reach the end of the road and for once in my life, sir duke will have nowhere to run ......
https://amp.theguardian.com/educati...ophe-protection-society-has-closed-in-disgust To get back off topic, it seems some have given up on the apostrophe. A bugbear of mine is the correct use of it. They fear the comma is next. Soon there will be no punctuation left. It seems like all that we were taught in the 60s, 70s and 80s (note no apostrophe) will be lost. It’s (short for it is) such a shame. My mother’s teachings (apostrophe as there’s possession) and all your mothers’ teaching (plural) is going to waste.
My grammar is not perfect...strangely grammar lessons were dropped in my grammar school when I was twelve, but I have never understood the problem that people have with apostrophes. The rules are simple...as your examples show. Why they get sprinkled like confetti is a mystery.
There are a surprising number of people who can’t do “its” in the sense of “belonging to it” without whacking an apostrophe in.
Without sounding old, I blame mobile phones and texting. In the old days we wouldn't have been encouraged to shorten things like txt for text and so on. Also, bad grammar and incorrect spelling is 'acceptable' in a text message, though my daughter always jokes how I never shorten words and capitalise in the right places and of course, use my apostrophes wisely
Has anyone seen Knives Out yet ? I thought it was brilliant . What a breath of fresh air to have a good old fashioned Murder Mystery film
