There are rumours of Etheridge leaving Cardiff and going to West Ham which would scupper any dream we might have of a Smithies return to Shepherds Bush. Etheridge is really good and deserves a shot at the Premier League but, like Smithies at Cardiff, he might just end up warming the bench at West Ham.

Source: "Philippines goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, 29, will not be involved in Cardiff City's FA Cup third-round replay against Carlisle on Wednesday, amid rumours of an imminent move to West Ham United.(Wales Online)" Taken from 'The Times' Gossip Column.

Excellent stuff, and massive kudos to Brentford and their owner for taking this pretty original route, and making it work. It would be really interesting to see it tested in the Premier League.

Warburton clearly didn’t like the restrictions on the manager (I haven’t looked but I doubt that Brentford have a starting 11 stuffed with loan players) that this model provides. And our owners do not have an iota of the business originality needed to come up with such a model - all they have done (mainly successfully to be fair) in their non sports interests is take other people’s ideas and use them in different geographies.

The most worrying, but also oddly enticing, thing about this story is the conclusion that having an academy is a waste of time and money. It would be rather cheering to see the supply of virtually free talent stolen by the biggest clubs dry up.

I want to quote something that Yorkshire R's said at the tail end of the Brentford match day thread where it might now be missed because I think it deserves a wider audience and is on point for this discussion:

"Warburtons solution is oh I worked with Kelly once nice chap he will do. Can add Wallace, Ball and have a penalty Barbet to that list. Then players hasn't worked with but must be great cos they are with premier league clubs Amos, Smith and Mlakar then suddenly really need to question summer acquisitions. On the flip side some footy MW has got us playing has been amazing. Maybe we need a top scout system aka Brentford and leave MW to manage, not use his "contacts" to bring in very average players."

I would add Kane to Yorkshire's list. As I said on that other thread, I remain a massive Warburton fan but transfers and, especially, transfer policy has been highly questionable.

All water under the bridge let's move with a low or no budget and progress, it will take time.
Personally I am not bothered about this transfer window I would rather we keep our heads obtain one or two fresh new faces on the cheap and trundle along winning and losing without getting relegated. We can start to rebuild again in the summer with a lot more choices on offer, plus we may even be in a better position to buy.

It maybe water under the bridge Flan but my point is we keep saying this year after year. I am sure your post is an exact copy from 10 years ago.
When will our board work it out?
It's not about Champions league football or FA cup winners, it's about having a well run ship. I have said many times my favourite time was with Olly in League One (although that isn't a good example of 'well run') just enjoyable). I see club after club passing us by and we are becoming an old dinosaur. We are not forward thinking.

I get both your first and this point Ellers, what I don't hear is a solution?
    1. We get our owners or new owners to throw billions into the club!
    2. We give it time and hope that a successful solution/plan is found!
    Take your pick?
Or do you have a better idea.

In the Clubs defence we spent next to nothing on those new signings last summer.

It's always better to have money than not.
I don't want to chuck money at a problem. The solution is that we live within our means but we run the club properly. Too many of the same mistakes happening again and again.
Why does it always seem to be QPR that are crap in the transfer market. No other club would have lost Charlie or Smithies for peanuts... and if people are going to blame the contracts... why wasn't that sorted? I think Sb mentioned loans. Why do we have so many after getting rid of 2 decent players (Furlong/Freeman)?
It seriously is just being run badly.
Funnily its been going on for years... who remembers the Trevor Sinclair deal with West Ham?

Hello all. Long time no post :)

Just to throw a random view in on this, contracts are not always down to the club. More often than not it is because a player does not want to sign a new one. The bad decision with Charlie imo was not selling him earlier. We took a risk of keeping him and hoping he would re-sign with us in the Prem...we know how that worked out.

Just to add. I really don't understand the Smithies deal though!

Agree, Charlie was a difficult one but after the Play-off final win he said he wanted to sign. They should have struck while the iron was hot IMO.
I just hope we don't lose Eze for peanuts and replace him with some inferior player who is rubbish.
Good to see you posting again. :emoticon-0148-yes:

When you have to halve wages, then halve again, then halve again, then halve again as we have been doing over the past 5 years or so it's not surprising that you have to take whatever is offered in transfer fees.........Austin, smithies, Freeman, furlong were all sold for realistic fees when no other club bid.....we had no choice as it reduces the wages bill and allows the club to be run prudently within ffp constraints.....it also allows a bit of wiggle room to bring players in within the wages cap.....no idea what the cap is but guessing that club operates a self imposed wages cap.....
We are now operating with the 5th lowest wages budget in the division......the club is paying the price for the Warnock/Hughes/Redknapp era.....make no mistake other clubs like derby, Boro, Sheff wed, Brum will be in this position in a year or so.....we are actually a few years ahead of them so should come out of austerity way before them.....

Fans need to accept that Hoos & co are moving the club forward......

    Well said.
Not sure where people think we are suddenly going to get more money from?
Owners, no matter how rich cannot just dip in their pockets any more, FFP has taken that option off the table. This is a loss making business and without new revenue streams we will be no better off next season than this. Any acquisitions will need to be paid for by sales. The only thing slightly in our favour is we no longer have any millionaires on the roster!

If I remember right we will be better off next season, FFPwise, because we had a big loss 3 seasons ago which is removed next season under the rolling 3 season loss calculation, meaning it should be easier to get under the 3 year operating loss limit of £39 million next season. As long as we aren't making as large a loss this season as 3 seasons ago, of course!
