For those not born long enough ago .....and to jog the memories of those of us old enough. Man, we were good. Epic Franny ‘Swallow dive’ Lee v Norman ‘bites yer legs’ Hunter punch up in part two.
I moved to East Acton from Oxford at the end of 1974 and 75-76 were the first games that my Dad took me to as a young six year old - hooked on the Hoops ever since!
I think it's easy to forget just how many good sides there were in that season and how many very good players. Testament to just how good we were.
Think the 0-0 draw at Sheffield United was a bad one as well.....they were bottom and we did everything but score....
Three away losses to Arsenal, Man U and West Ham over New Year were killers in the end. Plus we had a chance of a point at Anfield until Dave Thomas gave away a totally unnecessary (and totally out of character) penalty. Lots of ifs and buts, but we are still remembered by fans of other teams (of the right generation) as the outstanding side of the season. Col is spot on as well, lots of very good teams and great players around at that time. Good to see them again, plus I enjoy watching the terraces after goals were scored, look really dangerous. So much pushing and shoving which would in our current short tempered times lead inevitably to a fight. I’m off to do a bit of unsafe standing in the former East Germany in a couple of weeks, seeing a few lower league bundesliga games, looking forward to it.
Was at that one, we hit the woodwork five times, I must have unknowingly run over a black cat on the way up there. That really was the difference, a win there and it would have been 12 straight wins up to the Norwich match...
The Stoke players looked like they were already down the caravan when they played Liverpool in the penultimate match of the season.
I'm still trying to figure out if you mean the decline in the performance of our club, or my choices of where I live!! I've sent these links to my dad, who is in recovery after his third battle with the big C, and it's cheered him up somewhat!
I meant you started with the Rs in their finest incarnation, and have seen a few glimpses of good stuff and a lot of dross since. Best wishes for your Dad. If he/you/anyone else is interested YouTube has most of the first half of the seventies in this series, some happy watching in there.
