'I'm as upset as I've been while at Bristol City' - Lee Johnson on defeat to Huddersfield Town
Head coach reacts to dire Robins performance.

Bristol City put in one of their worst displays of the season on Tuesday evening at the John Smith's Stadium.

A first goal for the Terriers from Chris Willock and a Karlan Grant penalty were enough to see off the West Country side.

And a sanguine Lee Johnson gave his reaction to the defeat following the match, in which the home side produced their best home display of some time that had the locals purring and City looking in danger of their season grinding to a halt.

Johnson explained following the game that the performance and result hurt him - and that he was personally as upset as at any point of his four years in charge at Ashton Gate.

"We know and the players know that wasn’t anywhere near the standard we’ve set over the years," said Johnson in his post-match press conference.

"We had a very good training session yesterday but as a collective we haven’t performed anywhere near good enough.

"Obviously the first half display was the bulk of it. And at least in the second half we looked like we enjoyed football for a few spells and moved the ball a little bit," he said of the game.

The Expected Goals stats from the game told their own story: 4.24 goals on average for Huddersfield Town, and 0.22 for Bristol City.

City were out-shot, out-thought and out-fought, with Danny Cowley revealing afterwards that the Terriers did not know or anticipate City having set up with three centre-backs. The team sheets forced a rethink but it didn't hinder the hosts.

Huddersfield finished the match with double the shots of the visitors (both on-target and regular shots) and belied their lowly league position.

"I feel upset tonight - as upset as I’ve been actually, with watching one of my teams that I've signed and perform in a way like that," said Johnson afterwards.

"By that I'm not discrediting Huddersfield because I thought they were bright and they looked like they buzzed off playing football.

"I suppose what we need to think about now is how we go from the level of performance in the first half to what happens to go and get a result at Millwall on Saturday," said the head coach.

The bottom line the football your team plays is absolutely boring. Gutless with no direction.

He’s been here four years, no matter what players come in and go, the constant changing of team selection and tactics every game shows he still hasn’t a clue of his best team, after 4 years I thought he would have at least learnt something

It happens when you keep losing your best players, year in year out...

I THINK THIS IS THE BIGGEST SLICE OF THE PIE …. when you pick a few random teams in 4 divisions [ been in that division for 3rd season, did 24 teams!] compare team sheets on 6 random , 3 h 3 away consecutive … you come up with a pretty settled format a starting line up averaging 14 different players my next task [ it is quite time consuming, will do a City one! ] will start with our last run which embraces 3h 3a …

A SETTLED SQUAD AND TEAM IS PROBABLY WORTH 20 PTS A SEASON? ….! ..?

I think this has been coming for quite some time and basically the plot has been totally lost by everyone at Bristol City. Under Lee's direction and transfer business I can't see that we have made much, if any, progress and to hear him finally admit that our performances are close to diabolical must surely hurt him to the core. With many of our previously touted stars having left for pastures new and the incoming players that were supposed to make us more solid across the field doesn't appear to have made us the better team that we expected. We lauded certain new arrivals for their individual attributes, but the team we wanted never showed up for the contest.

This could signal the end of the L.J. experience but will that make us a true competitor going forward - I doubt it TBH.

Not happy with current form or playing style, BUT....
I hate defeats like anyone else, but really - the WORST?
I’m old enough to remember the chains goi on at Ashton Gate.
Watching us go down to League 1 more recently once the GJ era went sour - and being the Championship whipping boys and laughing stock under Benny back in 1999.
Nearly dropping into League 2 under Tinnion was terrible.
We’ve had some really horrible times as City fans. Being 7th in the Championship after 3 defeats isn’t that bad in the great scheme of things.

The last six games 3 home 3 away [peeps asking for stable team! ] compared to my comment earlier ...it is similar to most! maybe just the starting lineups need putting right …….

    legend ……………..
    from left to right 6 = Hudds game O = v QPR
61,51,41,31,21, O1 is sub appearance playing in that game
    number 1 [ all instances ] is a sub not played ……
    L = lost... W = won …. Ls /Ws = played as sub …… x = un played sub ...A = absent

    SO eg:
    Da silva PLAYED ALL GAMES
Fammy was a sub who played against Leeds
Hunt and Williams were unplayed subs against Leeds / Huddersfield

top group = 9 players, have featured in all the past 6 games!
    Overall 21 PLAYERS INVOLVED TOTAL

    BENTLEY -------------6 5 4 3 2 0 _____________ L L L W L W
    {WOLLACOTT ---------6 5 4 3 2 0 _____________ L L L W L W} permanent sub!
    DASILVA --------------6 5 4 3 2 0 ____________ L L L W L W
    FAMMY ---------------6 5 41 3 2 0 ____________ L L Ls W L W
    PATTY---------------- 6 51 4 3 2 0 _____________ L Ls L W L W
    HUNT -----------------6 5 1 3 2 0 _____________ L L x W L W
    ELIASON------------- 61 5 4 3 2 0 _____________ Ls L L W L W
    WILLIAMS------------ 1 5 4 3 2 0 _____________ x L L W L W
    WEIMANN------------ 61 51 4 31 2 0 ___________ Ls Ls L Ws L W
    WELLS -----------------6 5 4 3 21 O1 ___________ L L L W Ls Ws

    ___________________________________________
    BAKER----------------- 6 1 4 1 2 0 ____________ L x L x L W
    BENKOVIC ----------- 6 5 1 3 21 A _____________ L L x W Ls A
    HENRIKSON -------- 6 5 4 3 1 A_____________ L L L W x W
    ROWE----------------- 6 1 1 31 1 O1 ___________ L x x Ws L Ws

    _______________________________________________
    PALMER --------------1 51 41 1 A 1 _____________ x Ls Ls x A x
    MASSENGO ----------1 A 4 A 2 0 x _____________ A L A L W

When you lose a good player you should know what hole it leaves in your system. You then identify a new player that can fill it.
LJ doesn't have a system. They don't know what it is they are looking for because there is no overall plan.He yoyos between formations, personnel and style of play.

No wonder we are in a shambolic state. You need a clear picture of your style of play and recruit players that suit it. Watch the story of Clough & Taylor who knew exactly what type of player would work in their system. They bought players who hadn't done much elsewhere who were superb because they could see they had the strengths that fitted their system
LJ just copies his old mans 'clubs in the bag' philosophy but has no idea how to piece them together in an effective team with a clear and consistent gameplan.

Perfectly said robin! No more excuses just the right results are needed now. I don't think we really have a clue as to what is needed to fix the leaks.

We all asked for a multi million pound striker, we've got 2 (Fammy & NahkiWells) - We all asked for multi million pound defenders we've got at least 3 ( Baker, Kalas & DaSilva), - We asked for multi million pound mid fielders we've got 3(Palmer, Massengo &Nagy) - We asked for a multi million pound goalkeeper we've got one ( Bentley) - Plus our latest loan players, we've have been supplied with all we asked for..

I'm not going to state the obvious about home grown players but SL has supported Bristol City FC in all ways possible like a fairy godfather or a sugar daddy, what has gone or is going wrong?

Cant agree with that … although only 13 [ 14 ] players can play each game he does have a hard core of 9, and pre Brownhill 10! also was without Smith, whose long term injury gave Brownhill his chance … replaced by Henrikson ..Wright replaced by Bento and Wells in for Semenyo
Kalas back, Smith Back so effectively since Feb 1 .................HAS 5 NEW FACES …… at start of a season most on here say "give it 10 games to settle down and see what we have"

Well we have "3 goalscorers" Fammy, Weimann and Wells do we play 3 - 4 - 3 or continue ? - ? - 2 and rotate these 3? so 8 positions to find! ...and 16 players to choose from!
… Henriksen for Brownhill? so along with Rowe bought in for the job ..== MID FIELD …. so now 6 from 14...… [ Smith needs more time before starting ]
DEFENCE …………….. NEED 4 … this is where the nightmare lies? we have potentially [ 9 when Zak is fit ] have 8 to chose from! DaSilva already an everpresent and Benko brought in for the job, .…. that leaves 4 from 12 ………. Nathan Baker centre [ defensive ?] and Jack hunt centre [ attack minded?] so now need 2 more from the 10

    at the moment we have 2 attack + 1 sub ………….. 2 midfield +1 sub...………….. 4 defence no sub ….. so need 2 more midfields? / defence for 4-4-2 …
Eliason.. so THE OTHER CHOICES ARE the choices are
Callum, Patto, Nagy, Massengo, Palmer... uuuummm ….. Kalas… Williams …. Lopes ….. go for Patto

HUNT, BAKER, BENKO, DASILVA, [ WILLIAMS ]
    ELIASON, HENRIKSON,ROWE, PATTO [ SMITH ]
    FAMMY, [WELLS, WEIMANN]
    [PALMER …. O DOWDA …. NAGY] ...LOPES/ MASSENGO/ KALAS rotating

We have a lot of good individuals, however there is no cohesion and they don’t play as a team, when things went wrong in previous seasons LJ used to revert to players which he said he could trust , coincidentally many, but not all, of which were already here when he arrived, Flint, Pack , Smith , Bryan , Brownhill, Frankie, to name a few. Most of them are no longer with us. LJ has bought in expensive replacements , but we seem to have lost the togetherness and desire we had previously, whether that’s because he doesn’t have a settled system with individuals knowing their role and knowing what other players will do instinctively, I’m not sure. I think we concentrate too much on the opposition and not enough on having our own system and let the opposition worry about us .
