Got to be 73 cup final, as a youngun watching on the tele from mid morning I would’ve loved the chance to compete in the “it’s a knockout fa cup final” having our taste of the first victory against them a few beers before the match then on to our 2nd victory against them in 1 day. Trip back would’ve been awesome

For me the FA cup Man City game in 73' was a game I can never forget. Never heard noise like that before or since, the atmosphere was electric 2 hours before the game started and was still there way after the game finished. Don't think any Sunderland side has played in an atmosphere like that and I was privileged to be there to witness this memorable night.
Sunderland 4-1 Chelsea, December 1999. I was a 15 year old at the game with my dad. That first half shell shocked us as much as it did them, it was so surreal. I knew we were good, I knew we had been playing well but it still wasn't real until that day. We hadn't passed any big tests. Chelsea had beaten us 4-0 on the opening day and were one of the favourites for the title. They had 3 world cup winners in their squad from the previous year plus the likes of Zola, Poyet, Wise etc. That Phillips volley is still the best goal I've ever seen at the SOL. We were incredible. I left that game thinking we could compete with anyone. Quinn had made an absolute show of one of the most decorated defenders of all time (Desailly) and in Phillips we had the best striker in the country. I genuinely spent a time wondering if we could win the league.
I was in the Roker end Nads and remember Keller had pretended to be injured and got someone sent off I think in the previous game. Was brilliant to see us put 6 past him, absolutely superb game, did Russell get 4, Smith one and someone else or is my memory knacked? Good times
Reading replay was not for the faint hearted picked up at Ryhope village green at around 8am on the Wednesday eventually got back to Ryhope at around 7am on the Thursday quick wash and change then off to work but at least we won. And as they say the rest is history and what rich history for all SAFC supporters.
I was about 10 or 11 myself, stood in the Roker End. I think it was 1st Vs 2nd that day, they were above us and and had some charming chaps like Kasey Keller and Ben Thatcher playing for them. They were managed by Mick McCarthy. Bizarrely this was in December when they were top and they ended up getting relegated.
Just remembered going to Hillsborough in 92 with my dad and brother when 13/14, had been to all the other FA Cup ties and was so excited after queueing from 3 AM to get tickets at Roker Park for the Semi. Looking back I grew up a bit that day, being allowed a couple of pints before the match and then feeling sad and emotional for a while looking about at the ground, think it was the first cup match there since the disaster, a lot to take in and I nearly cried. Hadn't really felt that kind of depth of emotion before. It was an inch deep in piss under the kop end and I was just amazed by the rawness of the whole thing. The atmosphere was amazing during the match and the contrast of my emotions from being overawed with sadness for a moment before the game to ecstatic at the end will stay with me forever. Looking back my dad was a bit harsh as I'd ran out of paper round money and couldn't afford to go to the final so he took my adult cousin instead with my vouchers from the games. Obviously just wanted a good piss up in London! I just accepted it at the time but now it makes me swear and smile, the sod. Least we didn't win Excellent thread thanks Smug
Yeah mate I’m thinking Aww got it Man Utd 1-2 sunderland may 1968 Great day all round I thought I was all grown up and it was the start of things to come
I was working in Nottingham when we played County, for the replay i travelled up with their supporters. The girl friend at the time was not too pleased when she found out I went to the Navy Club before the match and straight back to Nottingham after the match.
A slight variation on your question BUT one game I would love to see again but with match officials having the benefit of VAR to refer to is the Milk Cup Final against Norwich. How a player (in this case Deehan) can not be deemed offside when he was the only outfield player in the six yard box (maybe even the 18 yard box, but I won't swear to that) AND standing directly between Turner and Hartford (who scored) I have NO idea!
Man City away just after we were promoted smashed them 4 - 0 remember doing handbrake spins all the way up one of Manchester ‘ s high streets in a Datsun 180b with everyone watching.
