this is a denser cloud than ANY WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD [THE BIGGEST is one which covers half of CHINA] we could likely expect these severely damaging clouds to go [ reduce a lot ]with the onset of electric cars …
I wonder how much of this is due to prevailing winds and the alps? Breathing this air is damaging to the lungs …. where is the most deaths in Italy? ….under that cloud .. most deths in uk ..London …

I don’t think Boris has handled things at all well.
U-turns almost every week and even now everything is simply ‘advisory’.
I said on OTIB: all non-essential businesses should be forcibly closed - sacking of employees banned, with financial compensation based on last years’ books.
Teachers looking after public sector workers’ children is a nice idea but why just teachers?
This is a time when we need a leader to step up to the mark - not just offer some advisory travel and social hints and tell everyone to sing ‘happy Birthday’ when washing our hands.
FFS we talk about the UK in the war - well let’s have some balls and some rationing now - with everyone pulling together with the threat of dire punishments if they don’t.

WOW r&w gobsmacked at your stance .. cant agree totally with most of it...
it is not U turns, it is adapting to an ever changing scenario unprecedented in in ours or anyone who have gone before us lifetimes...………
it has to be advisory in the first instance, it is not a weakness... the majority of modern day civilization is /has become educated in such a way as "I HAVE MY HUMAN RIGHTS AND WONT BE TOLD WHAT TO DO".. ..To counter this, the first step is go gently break it in...paint the picture according to the light …

don't fully understand your comment re teachers

This is a time when we need a leader to step up to the mark - not just offer some advisory travel and social hints and tell everyone to sing ‘happy Birthday’ when washing our hands.

    .

You have a downer on Boris... fair enough we all have opinions .. however this is a collective of advisors health science and others OK KIDS WASH YOUR HANDS FOR 20 SECS how many kids or people come to that can guess 20 secs … 30 kids in a class were asked locally to guess 20 secs [aged 8 ] the nearest was 14 secs the least was 9 secs … I did a test with my 3 of my GD's even missisippi came out at 16 secs /18 secs.... and 2 are world class dancers who need to be able guess timing so happy birthday is a good thing...

threats never work, and threats against what, "rationing?" people do not like threats and by the time they set up rationing it would be all over I still have my last ration tickets for fuel, arrived 2 weeks after it was all OK … check out the people buying up everything … about 20% of the population … my road has 29 families in it .. speak to most or those, they speak to some of those I don't, so pretty much we all know what the street does /says!!! …. NO ONE has bulk bought IN FACT one neighbour has run out of sugar and the best they could do was a cupful from 6 doors up who has a bag which usually lasts them a month! …. we haven't got any and next door has very little....

I disagree entirely that our PM is handling this badly.
When I see a comment from the Guardian or Independent I totally disregard it.
    Just petty point scoring.
It's so easy to take the p*ss.

This virus is new and unprecedented and I'd back our 'experts' above all others.
    Especially the Guardian and Independent.

All the departments that matter are putting in their best shots, Boris is the one to Face the masses...
its like being on one end of an island that has volcano it starts spewing lava flows so you need to get to other end to escape, unfortunately the odd eruption has chucked a couple of molten lumps ahead of you and caught fire to the centre of the island. To make matters worse the wind is blowing the smoke into your face so you cant see what lies ahead … occasionally the wind drops or blows in another direction. you head for a clear space bur the wind changes and you see another route so head for that... the wind stops, save the draught caused by the heat. ALL THE TIME THE LAVA FLOW IS CREEPING CLOSER... to the side of you see a rocky barren cliff, so you make for that it has a steep drop of 500 ft to the rocky shore the wind picks up and the fire is driven relentlessly toward you but it cant burn rock. the intense heat is metres away as you shelter behind rocks in a shallow gully air being dragged up the cliff allows you to breathe ...the fire meets the cooling lava flow and runs out of fuel, when the wind turns round the fire has no fuel it has already burned it... the peak of danger has passed … now tread gingerly over hot embers to reach the safe haven and the boat to safety ……… team work and taking advantages at the right time saw you through ..

I’ve been impressed with Rishi Sunak, and Boris and I’m not a Tory voter.

Time will tell. We're currently on a steeper curve than Italy was at the same point. I won't be judging him yet though, he has one of the toughest tasks ever given to a PM.

the worry is in 4 years time if we have a hard time doing what the election set out to do … the UK being free to grow etc out of the EU the labour / other parties will try and cash in "they promised to do this that and the other" ..this time the austerity period a necessary evil due labour leaving the black hole and empty coffers was recognised by the public as being the answer to the problem [ austerity ] and recognised that the government might just be the right answer... when this is over... when!? … it will have likely set back the governments purse by some 700 £bn ….
the EU could be in serious trouble financially … France and Germany the biggest donaters will not wish to put in any more than they do SPAIN and Italy like wise, the other 23 countries are pretty much all negative contributors!

We are all in for a rough ride, there is no point in chipping away with political points, we have just got to buckle down, listen to what the experts tell us and make sure we apply their advice, it's a totally new virus, it's a killer, mainly the elderly but younger people are vunerable, it's not flu, it's a killer disease, so isolate, don't panic shop, get plenty of sleep and keep washing those hands.

I hope we all get through this in one piece and survive, it's that dodgey.

Watch the panic buying now for booze, because of stupidity of people not listening to the advice on social distancing we are basically one foot into lock down.

Like you said good luck to everyone hope to be hearing from you on the other side of this.

a time to keep your mouth shut! [ so you don't alert peeps to horde ] was in our local "cut price shop" a real proper job ..! When I said to my missus how much soap have we got in the SOAP DISPENSERS... about half full and a spare she replies … OK a programme on TV said you could use shampoo so I will get a couple … the woman about 6 foot away suddenly grabbed grabbed about 12 or more more than half the stock …. I meant to say shower gel …. so carried on shopping watching her struggle with about 6 kgs of shampoo and another 4 bottles of bleach approaching thecheck out got there just before her.. but had a comment i wished to make so said … that looks heavy go first … she pays for it loads it into 3 bags at 6p each per bag and as she is heading for the door says to my wife … good job I remembered it wasn't shampoo but shower gel is a good substitute, or you could have been struggling ….. with half a dozen bottles of that shampoo stuff!!!! …. wonder if she took it back????

whilst I;ve been quite impressed with boris and co's response to this crisis, when you compare it to the amount that went into saving the banks a few years ago it should be managable,

    My thoughts exactly.
Still, we are where we are and just have to sit it out until it goes away I suppose.

How utterly disgusting the chaos ABUSE BULLYING at a supermarket in DUDLEY the 2nd biggest epi centre in the UK... at a time when our NHS service hero's many of whom working long hours in hazardous CONDITIONS get shoved out of the way by an unruly herd of self centred un humans IN AND BEFORE THEIR allotted time [NHS] . I spoke to Tesco in DUNDEE last night as I get regular emails … it gave new opening hours and stratedgy of the coming week/s Sundays 9am to 10am NHS [ think this was arranged a few days ago ] I asked if it was being / extended to employee's of care homes … on hold for 5 mins or so whilst it was checked out, and NO it is not. However my concerns /input is being put forward as it was not considered at the time [ meeting? ]
The pensioner period does not go very smoothly either … Father in Law went at 6-15am by 7am store was full of "non pensioners" clearing the shelves!
I could not believe the crowds in Snowdonia .. Brecons …. Cornwall …. if you want to spread the disease this is the way to do it …. OK OPEN AIR but I know the path's and those crowds would have been touching each other in that density [ I noted all were going in same direction wait till those at top are coming back down !!!! ]
something has to be done these moronic amoeba's are IQ zero's and from past experience a lot of these weekenders are City folk, you only see them when it is a fine day and from their attire they were not regular walkers ….
I will put my hand up to my self isolation not being properly established … Friday I WENT FOR A 3.5 HOUR walk saw no one within 1km of me when I set off .. went shopping Sat after collecting wife from her dads 1 hour in an almost empty Tesco but they had what we needed .. and today another shop for about 15 mins to get some stuff for my hobby and keep me occupied. I commend the peeps at PROPER JOB who kept about 5 foot or so apart in the Q and in the aisles
spent 4 hours in the garden after that covid apparently doesn't look Kindly on UV …..

so glad we moved away from London a few years ago, to here in southport surrounded by some lovely countryside, vast beaches and marshland, where I take the dog for hours every day with my charity shop binoculars in hand, see some lovely birds, marsh harriers etc, and really helps put things behind and forget a little
