Now would be a good time for the Govt to be clear and honest with us. Every time I hear “ ramping up” without an actual target date I think of the 12,000 ventilators that turn out to be 8,000. Drop the spin and add the detail.

Govt say 97,000 coronavirus tests done. One of highest levels in Europe. Really....? A week ago Germany had already done 167,000 and Italy 206,000.....

These people are not fools and have not been taken in by the government. Are the government assuming that enough people will not question what they say?

My daughter works in operating theatres some of the week, and one of people she works with has come up with a DIY ventilator in just a week. Low cost based on existing technology they could be available next week, but for some reason the government would rather give a contract to someone who doesn't even have a prototype yet, and it could be weeks or even months before they are available. You can read about the cheap one here.

This letter appeared in the DT last w/e giving a completely different take on all this and perhaps not unrealistic but I cannot see any government making such a call.
It come from an elderly person which gives it some credibility.

My grandson who lives in Gloucester has a best mate that he spends a lot of time with. His friend"s father is an engineer who fixes alarms in offices and hospitals. Tuesday night he was admitted into hospital and is in an induced coma, as they try to save his life. This person had his 50th birthday last November, and has two teenage children. He possibly picked up the virus on one of his hospital visits, but that of course is unknown. I think that your letter writer hasn't twigged that not all sufferers are his age or older. Looking at the age groups infected here, a large percentage are from a similar age group.

Just been out for the first time since Monday night, my street was fairly busy for 5pm on a Thursday, only about 20% of people were wearing masks and there was very little attempt at social distancing.

I popped into the shop to restock my beer supplies (at this rate they will need to stop collecting our recycling once every 2 weeks, you won't see our front door in 10 days time!) and it was busier than usual, the lady at the till was wearing a mask + gloves but that seemed to be it.

Going to avoid going out for the next couple of weeks just in case, although I can't stockpile beer as it seems to disappear even faster... :frown:

Germany is currently doing 500,000 per week Frenchie which is why their 'new cases' column is so high. Bosch have just brought out a fast testing kit which will be ready in about a week - this produces a result in just over 2 hours. The problem has been the time lag - daily figures for 'new cases' are not new at all. At the present time diagnosis is about a week after the initial infection took place if you count 3-4 days for symptoms to appear and another 2-3 days for the processing of tests. Allowing that the first 7 days are meant to be the most contagious then this is the biggest problem. There is also the fact that some people appear to be 'super spreaders' and able to infect a number of people, whereas there have also been many cases where one member of a family had it but nobody else was affected. If Germany's figures appear alarming it is because they are testing more.

Just as the press conference was about to start, Downing Street announced what amounts to a U-turn over participating in the EU-wide effort to procure ventilators and other medical equipment. According to one government source, the UK did not participate in the first procurement schemes launched by the EU because the emails sent to the UK inviting it to take part were somehow missed. The source claims this was nothing to do with the government making some point about Brexit.

The ACMO Harries says the World Health Organisation said “test, test, test”. But they are the World Health Organisation. They have to advise countries with very different health systems. The UK has a very developed health system, she says.

    Roughly translated:

"We're not testing because we're better than those other countries. The World Health Organisation knows we're special and was never really talking to us."

So there you have it. British exceptionalism in both word and practice. It makes me sad.

We should not forget that Johnson was asked if the UK would be joining the EU procurement scheme only yesterday. His one word answer. NO!

Just seen this headline on BBC.com news.
"Six at boxing qualifier test positive"
Two months ago I would have assumed that they tested positive for banned drugs.
How our view of the world changes.

This really is dreadful, and makes you wonder where the priorities lay. When this whole awful affair does come to an end the world economic order is going to be in tatters, so this is hardly the time to be trying to sort that problem out. The great depression led to WWII, all started when the stock market crashed in 1929. We have seen the results of the subprime crashing of stock markets around the world, that brought about a further ten years of turmoil. This crisis is likely to be as bad, or worse than those two events and will require cooperation between nations if everything is to come together again. What happens if it doesn't come together I haven't a clue, but try nations must.

these are just brokers , trying to get a high offer for some ventilators that may or more likely won’t be available, surely they are the most sought after machines on the planet , hence why it’s in a local rag ......?
