They are probably suffering from betting shop / cafe withdrawl symptoms. I hear these can make people exceptionally grumpy and cantankerous...
UK death toll passed 1,000 in the last 24 hours ... 260 registered since this time yesterday. Nobody should begin to feel complacent. Matters might appear to be getting a little better, as we are settling into routines. There is order at the supermarkets now instead of chaos. The streets are quiet. We are beginning to get used to lockdown life. But the War has only just begun. The benefits of staying at home, in terms of curbing the rate of infections and deaths, will probably not be seen for at least another 10-14 days. And even then the improvement will be very slow. We must be patient, and resolute, and carry on observing all anti-virus protocols. Obeying the lockdown, social distancing, and washing our hands often. And carry on helping our NHS workers and cheering them at every opportunity. We will beat this, but it will take time.
Never will I be so pleased to go into a Supermarket next Friday. Two weeks self isolation is f****** hard work.
So far we've been reasonably successful at keeping party politics out of this. Hopefully this will continue.
Agreed. I've commented recently criticising Emily Thornberry for her unhelpful performance on QT. But I can't really see the point of general ridicule of the Opposition or the Government based on past history. We had all those laughs and banter last year, when (in our innocence) those issues seemed important to us. Brexit and the General Election have been rendered irrelevant by this crisis - Coronavirus is the most serious threat to our society since the World Wars and the 1917 Flu outbreak. If we get this wrong and the NHS collapses under the strain of trying to cope, we are all in for a world of pain. What's happening right now will seem like a paradise lost. I'm expecting Sir Keir Starmer to behave like a Statesman until this crisis is well and truly over. And that is going to be a couple of years hence in my view.
209 deaths registered from Coronavirus in the last 24 hours in the UK. A little less bad than 260 from the 24 hours before that, but this could just be a statistical anomaly. If we are lucky, the lockdown could be slowing the infection rate outside the London area enough to make a really substantial difference. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have just under 20,000 confirmed infections in the UK now. There is a widely accepted notion that the actual number will be about 5 times this many. So call it 100,000. The UK population is estimated to be about 70 million. So the infected ratio of the population is therefore about 1 in 700. This will probably be rather higher in the London area and maybe a few of the larger regional cities (Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle) but lower in other areas. So as an example; if Charlton played a match tomorrow at the Valley and 14,000 fans turned up, at least 20 of those fans would be infected with Coronavirus (14,000 = 20 x 700) Probably the number of infected would be rather higher, as Charlton is within London where infection rates are significantly higher than the national average of 1 in 700. Perhaps 40 or 50 supporters among the crowd might be infected. Bear in mind too that most people infected only have mild symptoms, or virtually no symptoms. So only a minority of infected folk would be ill enough to stay away from the match. Imagine how many other fans those 40 or 50 could unwittingly infect by the time the match was over. Hundreds upon hundreds would be going home taking the virus with them, to accidentally infect their families, including vulnerable loved ones. This is why obeying the lockdown rules is absolutely vital. And why it is absolutely vital that infection rates come down to at least 20 times lower than they are now before mass gatherings like football matches are even considered again. Even with an infected rate of 1 in 14,000 of the population (instead of the current 1 in 700) it is likely that one infected fan will be among the crowd at the Valley. And after the match, perhaps dozens of fans that person came into contact with would be taking the virus home with them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Until there is a Coronavirus vaccine that all elderly and vulnerable people can be given (like the Flu vaccines they can have every winter) I cannot see how mass gatherings like football matches can safely be allowed again. Until there is a vaccine available to everybody, hand washing + social distancing + isolation are the ONLY weapons we have to keep Coronavirus under control. Any kind of crowd is obviously a violation of social distancing. A vaccine for everybody may not be available for over a year. Forget the 2019-20 season. How can even the 2020-21 season be played except behind closed doors? Even measures to severely restrict fan numbers inside grounds will probably not work. Fans without tickets will flock to grounds. Fans will gather in pubs. Coronavirus will spread again. I predict that when it finally does return, we will have to get used to Football behind closed doors for at least a whole season. The financial consequences of that will be crippling for every Club. The era of mega-wealthy players on massive wages may be over forever. Or at the very least for several years.
Dorks of the Day ... Sunday 29th March https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-52084653 Let's have a party!!
I'd start putting people in stocks. Then people could come and throw all their rotten (stockpiled) food at the idiots.
I see from the BBC Coronavirus area checker ... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274 ... there are currently 265 confirmed cases in Ealing (where I live) out of 341,982 residents. Assuming confirmed cases are 20% of actual infections that comes to 1,375 out of 341,892 which is 1 in every 249 people. 168 confirmed cases in Greenwich (including SE7) out of 286,186 residents. Again assuming the 20% confirmed cases theory, that comes to 840 out of 286,186 which is 1 in every 341 people. So at this moment a theoretical Valley crowd of 14,000 would contain roughly 41 infected fans when the match begins. Rather more by full time.
I can top that. I got out my tin of Mr Sheen and a couple of cloths, and cleaned all my remote controls There were a surprising number of them around the flat, for various TVs and DVD players, decoders etc. They were all pretty gunky.
