We were slightly ashamed tbh. We did a month touring Scotland having only ever really been to Berwick, Edinburgh and a Rangers v Celtic match! The far NW corner is another world and the Glens up to Fort Augustus are incredible. Some of the isolated villages are full of some of the best people we've ever met.
Similar Smug we bought a touring caravan and have been to opposite ends of the UK in the last two years , Loch Ness Shores and Dartmouth , we were looking at where this year till all of this kicked off . We used to have a trailer tent and have had some great holidays in various areas of France but don’t know if I would have the balls to go to France with it - getting a bit old for it I think . Dover to Calais stop at Bethune was great but always managed to get lost at Charles de Gaulle airport bypass - nightmare when we could see the Eiffel Tower due to a wrong turn , even with Sat Nav don’t know whether I would go back towing anything . Still envy you as we loved France !!!
If you and Mrs Smug ever pass by this way if you get the chance call in and I will show you some cracking places
There isn’t a place on earth more beautiful than our own Lake District. I w had the fortune to see so much of the world and it’s true.
That's very kind mate, we're the kind of people who take up offers like that ... ... where exactly are you. We drove up to Gretna last year and passed over a remote part of the Lake District in pouring rain ... ... it was the first time I'd ever seen the 'wild horses'. We'd parked up to check the map and they came towards us through the mist ... ... gave us a hell of a shock
I'll buy you a couple...and reminisce on how I was kicking your ass in the 'expunged' prediction league
Just outside of Kendal mate the ponies are bonny there are a few different groups of them roaming about in the Lakes
Would you have had this stance in your 20s-30s? If it wasn't for flying, would you have met the contacts that have enabled you to retire in France? id be happy to accept a lower number of flights, and higher prices. But to cut flying out completely would restrict people from seeing the world.
As John Cooper Clarke said, "I've seen the world I didn't like it ... ... what's in it for me?" Seriously mate, I've adapted to what's been thrown at me. If I'd had to stay in the UK I'd have cracked on and had a good life. I know exactly what you're saying but I'd still say endless available flights aren't a good thing. Many people go to Turkey, Greece, Spain, etc, but really haven't a clue where they are, what the history or culture is ... ... they're not seeing the world, they're seeing a hotel sun lounger, strip of bars and a fortnight of full English breakfasts.
Just got this text from a close mate of mine - "Starting to hit home. One of my student's dad (my age) passed away earlier yesterday with just three days of illness from the virus - such a lovely man, so sad and leaves a son of 15 years" - my mate is 55 (I think). And I was one of those ****ers who said "it's only the flu" ...
It's unfortunate that quite a few won't change their attitudes until it affects someone close to them. Someone posted this on facebook the other day and i think that a lot of the younger generation should take note of it... please log in to view this image

LeisureWilliam Henry Davies What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this is if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. Another favourite my mine is Sea Fever...
My dad In his day was a master of reading and recitation I saw his school report circa 1930 98% not bad for a pit yakka
When I was in Junior school several of us were chosen in turn to read something out in morning assembly. The ones not reading would stand in front of the one reading, sticking out a finger for every pause or mistake you made and take the pizz afterwards...tough school
