Fascinating, absolutely fascinating - how did you stumble on that ??!!

One anecdote, is that , when i was a kid, we used to stand (it was virtually all standing) in the Covered End for the first half and then walk around the ground to watch the second half from the South End (or vice-versa as the case may be).

Also notice the fences around the pitch - i think these were outlawed after the Hillsborough and Bradford disasters

Amazing looking at how bad the Valley once became compared to how it is now - Definitely sends a shiver down the spine :-(

    What an absolutely brilliant read.

Good grief, that bonfire brought memories back - hell of a day that was - unbelievably upsetting and uplifting at the same time.

Haven't seen a fraction of those photos before, even spotted my old barrier on the East Terrace!

Thanks for posting, Captain B. <ok>

Wow. Lump in my throat. I used to stand in the clock end. That tiny terrace that the tunnel now is. I was at the town hall (well outside) and the clean up campaign. What I would love to see is a picture of the club house behind the north stand. That was the birthplace of the valley party and one of the finest underage drinking venues since the eagle pub.

    Yes, thanks for posting.
For those young enough not to remember these times, i would suggest you read this link and wonder how the Valley would have looked in those days when you sit into your comfy seats at the Valley now - its quite a transformation !
The days of the Glikstein family are long gone !

I was just looking for photos of the old East Terrace when I found it.

I'm only 19, so stuff like this is gold dust for me. It's all too easy to take the existence of this club, and its irreplaceable home, for granted these days.

    Glad you all appreciate it.

Whilst it is not the post to point fingers. The glickstein family were not the problem, just products of their times, if you want a villain-then Greenwich Council. What a bunch of jumped up tossers. I will never forgive them and still pee in the reception of Peggy Middleton house when ever I get the chance.

Great link, thanks for sharing <ok>

Quite liked the following comment, a real breath of fresh air amidst the debates with Millwall/Palace/The Wendies:

"Any Charlton Athletic supporter surveying this magnificent stadium and with memories of the very positive activity of first clearing the old derelict ground and then forming their own single issue part (The Valley Party) to secure the return of the club to their spiritual home can and should be an immensly proud person today. What is tragic is that the club has sunk to it's lowest ever status in half a century and plays currently in League 1.

Charlton are an excellent example of a community club and their youth and development progrgamme, their Academy and opportunities given to their own home produced talent to achieve full professional status in the game is second to none."

wow thanks for this post , my dad took me to see the valley in 88 and the first time i saw charlton was at selhurst (a cross i will always have to bear!), the whole story sums charlton up, its more than a club , i know most supporters would say the same about there club but its always been a real community club, a family, from my geographical upbringing i could have ended up with the gills or numerous kentish clubs but after that first contact there was no going back. it may be a shame to see us down in league 1 but this post makes me happy to be there , happy just to be anywhere , happy just to see our club thriving and still just that ... our club.

Top quality thread, Captain B. Thank you for finding and posting it.

Seeing those photos and the progress the club has made since those dark-days has really lifted me and filled me with immense pride.

What a wonderful club we have, eh?

Not ashamed to admit that that brings an tear to the eye. Fantastic read, and such great memories.

I used to stand on that little terrace between the North Stand and the Main Stand, and then run round to the East Terrace with about 5 minutes to go to me up with my Dad before the final whistle and rush for the exits. Also remember climbinmg to the top of that East Terrace and watching the game from up there - breathtaking stuff.

Just goes to show what a great club we are as others would have folded during this time.

Proud to be a Addick, and always will be!!!!

Captain Blackadder may I add my thanks for this link. Took me back to the crowds of 3/4000, wandering around the terraces. when it almost was "everybody knows your name". Turn up on my motor bike, 10 minutes before the game no problems getting in. As I take my seat in the NW stand, in a strange sort of way I quite miss it,
but taking my rose tinted glasses off I think I'll stick to the improved Valley.
