Problem is every country compile their stats slightly differently. We’re stuck on 5 recovered for past week. Strange variations in figures are we currently have about 110 critical in icu with about 14 dying daily average while you have only 160 critical in icu with close on 600 dying per day. That suggests a huge number dying before they ever get to icu treatment which has to be worrying. Maybe I’m analyzing the figures wrong WJ

I think it's all over the place, tbh. Pretty sure that people are dying & not being tested. I mean, if you died at home, you certainly wouldn't be sent to ICU, and I'm guessing they wouldn't waste a test on you either, since you're already dead & the test kit are in short supply. At least it's not China! :D

In the stats, they are including people that died with virus symptoms - so if an 88 year old with a runny nose dies, he or she is included in the stat.

Probably only stats that count are the rate at which deaths are increasing and when they eventually level out. It’s clear they are most if not all corona caused as figures are soaring currently. Just look back to one week ago

Some have to be taken with a pinch of salt, French have just added 800+ who died in care homes over last few weeks, showed up as 1300+ dead in one day but it isn't.

Everyone is getting a bit hung up on stats. There’s a bit of a media fixation with them. They are meaningless. They have no idea how many have it, or have had it. It’s a notifiable disease so it goes down as the cause of death whatever underlying issues may have contributed or caused it. We don’t know how many extra lives it will cost this year, it will only be worked out in retrospect, but we do know it’s ending a lot of them ahead of time and the strain on the NHS has collateral effect for those with other illnesses.

It doesn’t matter how many ...every life lost is a tragedy.

The news outlets have been really grinding my gears with their repetitive questions. I think this government have been doing a decent job to be honest but someone needs to tell them they’re over doing the word ‘unprecedented’

Unprecedented is carefully chosen as it implies no blame can be attached for lack of preparation.

reality is we were ‘overdue’ a pandemic and there have been countless warnings - I say this a-politically as it applies to previous governments also.

truth is you can’t plan for every ‘what if’ - but the testing situation is shambolic

Don't know why, but didn't get it. If it was regards Jammy, I unblocked him and read his post, thanks both of you.

Government absolutely knew it was coming once it hit Italy & Spain & no doubting original policy was to let it spread to create 'herd immunity' before changing tack.

Absolutely... made a similar point earlier on the corona thread. My point here was about general long term planning in the event of any pandemic, not reacting to one when it happens.

Sorry, haven’t been on the other thread. Normally stay clear of politics but your point is well made. Still think measures could have been planned for once it became clear it would hit the UK.

The governor of NY was saying how all the PPE stuff comes from China and they just couldn't get hold if it when needed.

He also made the point of how idiotic this is and that countries would have to change in the future.
