Pocket change for a government. Just like one of us losing £20 down back of the sofa in 2010 and finding it in 2017.

But heat kills it. I am certain I read that it can’t live long over 27C and cooking temps obliterate it. If it was even half cooked it would be ****ed.

    +1355 deaths in France?

That’s a new world record I believe and the first daily death toll to hit 4 figures.

Looks like everyone who was saying ‘as bad as it is in Italy, most places will be worse’ might have been bang on.

Just seen this from a report on France yesterday:

“The damning poll came shortly before health chief Jérôme Salomon told reporters France had recorded its highest one-day death toll since the epidemic began, saying 509 more people had died in hospital to bring the toll to 4,032.

There are now 24,639 people hospitalised with Covid-19 – the respiratory illness associated with the virus – with 6,017 of them in intensive care, Mr Salomon said.

The death toll includes only those who died in hospital and not those who died at home or in nursing homes.”

That’s a lot of people both in hospital and in ICU.

It’s an Americanism, used frequently in the Sgt Bilko series, they spell it Furlow, all it means is temporary leave of absence

I've done that once a week for the last 2 weeks. To have to get back in your car without so much a hug for them both or kissing the top of my mums head (she's got diddier as the years have passed) is beyond hard. BUT , unlike some others theres the hope that'll happen again soon...

Historically, every 1% that US unemployment goes up, an extra 20,000 deaths are seen a year, through direct poverty, suicides and related causes. Morgan Stanley analysts this morning predict that US unemployment could hit 16,6% as a result of the economic hit.. Long term, over several years, the cure could be more of a killer than the virus.

the US has got virtually no welfare safety net compared to the rest of the a western world. Their government support consists during this crisis of a one off payment of $1200 per person. It’s the outcome of having a society based on the concept of a rugged individual making it in their own, and if you don’t become rich then you were too lazy or stupid. Everyone for themselves.

imho, that 20000 figure can be greatly ameliorated and the vast majority of deaths are preventable with proper support. In Europe, especially after WW2, we focus on the greater good before individual rights (hence the nhs, welfare state etc) as we recognise that if we all look out for each other, we all benefit.

Neither approach is right or wrong, just a reflection of the values of the respective countries and their societies. I’ve lived on both sides of the Atlantic, and I know which one I’d rather be in - the one where I don’t have to fear surviving covid-19 but being bankrupt and homeless from the hospital bill.

We are the grandparents that our family comes to see, stood down the path.
Although we had to stand apart we are closer to our family than ever.

I agree with you on this. However, US social care and universal healthcare won't be implemented in time to help those affected by the economic fallout of the coronavirus lockdown in the next 3 years. If 600,000 die over 3 years as a result of poverty, suicide Etc. as a result of saving 500,000, is it worth it? It is a hard discussion to have.

I think this pandemic will force a lot of navel-gazing about the state of our respective societies, and a re-examination of our values. However, in the US I fear that people are so deeply entrenched in their own world-view that they are simply not able to hear and understand the other persons point of view, let alone debate it - the polarisation of society and politics is so extreme there at the moment. Considering and trying a different approach simply isn't possible. It's a really interesting topic, but I shall leave it there as it could stray too close into politics.

    It was?

I recall now not reading it but heard it on a BBCR5L phone in with Dr Chris Smith. Maybe he uses FB as a source. Wouldn't surprise me with experts these days.

I do remember thinking the body temperature is higher, but it is said to bond very quickly so who knows?

I couldn’t actually find any testing with heats on this new coronavirus but did find a study in SARS coronavirus which suggests it starts to become unstable above 25C, 38C kills it very quickly and 56C obliterates it.

Perhaps they’re just making assumptions off that?

Facebook is full of fake advice. I have had several messages from people telling me to do the same sort of stuff in different forms.

My friend who is a Doctor told me exactly what advice to follow.

    “Stay at ****ing home!”

Regardless. You’d likely have to eat the animal raw to catch it from your meal, probably on the day it died. Which was the answer I was making.

In a society where huge percentages have access to a fire arm then you shouldn't be surprised that suicides are high.
