Good morning all, I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10 ... 19.1578255). Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years. We have a few questions that we hope you may be able to answer regarding the music Newcastle have used. As far as we are aware, Newcastle players have entered the pitch to “Local Hero” since it was released in 1963. Is this correct? Has the song team come out to always been the Mark Knopfler version of the song? Have there been any notable occurrences since this time in which the club have used other songs? And do you know what the club played in the pre ‘Local Hero’ days? If you remember any others, can you tell us the artist, the song title, and roughly what season you think it was used in please? And if you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic. I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the tannoy system as the players enter the field. If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the project. Thank you very much for your help here. Regards Joe Headland
After one match as the crowd were leaving in the last season we were relegated and after another home defeat the bloke on the tannoy system played Made me smile somewhat wryly but did annoy one or two fans.
The music was written in 1983 not 1963 and its always been Mark Knopfler's version (have there been others?). That started to play around the time Shearer started for us I think, so approximately 1996.
I'm doing ok Nev, touch wood,. Not quite a full lockdown, as I've gone out once the past fortnight. I've avoided the vulnerable list, but, GP has advised to avoid going out. Been working from home since early March, so managed to get by quite well. Not that it makes any difference as missus and son are in frontline services, and chances are one of them will bring the bloody thing home. How about yourself?
I've been on furlough since March 16th and we've been told we will probably be the last sector allowed back to work, so in it for the long haul. Bored out my brains and not been going out for any exercise yet cos still too many idiots round here on the streets and not keeping their distance. I've been shopping at the corner shop too cos don't really want to brave the supermarkets yet. It sucks, but it is what it is.
