Keeps people from going over the edge I suppose. As for DIY and fixing stuff being open it probably saves a few marriages and relationships. I myself have nearly run out of things to do. Been through my stuff and thrown what I can. Only hall carpet to wash now and some stuff to burn. Wanted to fit new pads to my cars brakes but local guy was shut. So I thought I would do it myself following a video on you tube. So went online and was quoted 7 to 10 days delivery time.

What’s the general thought on here to how our government is handling things?

The press here seem to want to focus on not enough testing but surely we’ve put the resources into the right places? When you read this morning that New York is down to it’s last 6 ventilators and they’re turning car parks into holding areas, surely our lot deserve a bit of praise no?

Very slow to get going, and criminal how we let the virus fly in with no airport checks, but done the right thing eventually.

And now your government has committed to testing 100k a week. Can’t they make up their mind or are just making it up as they go along

Weird, as alcohol lowers your resistance.

I think the handling has been average. We've been slow to react and there was a bit of a balls up with the ventilator situation. We've had far longer to get prepared that Spain or Italy did but haven't really done a lot with that time. The government can't take all of the blame though because they are mostly following the experts which is what you'd want. Boris isn't an expert epidemiologist so all you can ask of him is to follow what the experts tell him.

Unfortunately most of the damage has been done years before the epidemic started. We have 2.54 hospital beds per 1000 people (down from 2.76 just five years ago) compared with 8.00 in Germany, 5.98 in France and even 6.56 in Lithuania. Germany haven't suddenly developed 10x our capacity for testing, they've had it in place long before and as a result they will have fewer doctors and nurses self isolating when they don't have the virus.

It’s the only thing that’s getting me through. I’m looking at the clock by late afternoon, wondering when I can reasonably start.

to do well you needed 1) a good starting position 2) react quickly with a good plan and then 3) execute well.

Few countries had a good starting position though it does seem the cuts to the NHS over the last 10 years hurt us (less. Ventilators per 1m people than most etc)

I would mark us down for slow to react, and there was definitely a false start on what the strategy should be

execution is mixed - the 4000 bed hospital is impressive. The failure to buy up supplies before others cornered the market is not so good, and there seems to be a problem with distributing stuff we do have to the right people.

overall verdict - mixed. Jury still out.

    think that’s a balanced summary

The beds funding situation is down to a series of governments not just this one.. but there will be an enquiry into herd immunity strategy changing half way through. We basically ‘gave up’ the time advantage we had over Spain/Italy.

Betting a few NHS workers and other frontline people need a stiff drink after their stress packed day.

I don't drink at home, never have, don't know why, just find it more appealing to get a few scoops in down a pub. Tell you one thing, I'm beginning to have this vision about the first day in a pub after lockdown ends, getting together with people and having a real blowout. <ale><ale><ale><cheers><cheers>

We should all do a Leeds meet-up even if there is no game.

The one bit of information I have encountered most in the recent weeks that keeps repeating over and over again is that the dose of the infection seems to have an impact.

Alot of the young healthy fit doctors and nurses who are dying are receiving alot of exposure to this bug. It seems to give the virus a big head start on the immune system and increases the chances of it overwhelming the host.

The last place you need to end up is a hospital ward surrounded by people who have and are emitting the virus!

I'm up in Yorkshire but the wife works in deepest darkest Lancashire. She says that the local Government have been in touch with her workplace asking if there are any spare warehouses to store the dead in the coming weeks and that we have about 5 weeks until it peaks up here!

A tough couple of months ahead!

Weather on Sunday and Wednesday low 20s I’d imagine we’re going to see a lot of people ignoring the stay at home rule

    **** it.

On Sunday, we're getting up around 8.00, preparing and packing a picnic, getting in the car and sitting there for an hour, going to have the music on loud, whilst the kids argue in the back. Get back out, walk to the garden, have a kick about, game of swingball then eat the food, laze around for a couple of hours, back in car, same scenario, back out again, down the drive and back through front door. The normal sunny day, without the mileage.
