The Premier League’s overriding priority is to make as much money as possible while pretending to care about the health and wellbeing of the nation and our communities
The 2019/20 season will only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so. So 2021 then............................
Danny Rose on the BBC site commenting on the ongoing pay discussions, does say some reasonable stuff but this quote stood out ""It was just not needed for people who are not involved in football to tell footballers what they should do with their money. I found that so bizarre." Does anyone think without the pressure put on them over the last week players would even consider a wage cut? They are so disconnected. There has been an element of distraction and scapegoating from some quarters, and there are some standout people like Pep who gets it. Premier players however mostly still seem to be living in the world as it was 4 months ago.
Some of the stuff I’ve read was that they were told not to say anything until they had figured out what they were going to do. I have also seen a couple of examples of players setting up charities to help (Rashford and Henderson are the ones I’ve seen, in sure there are more)
Does anyone think without the pressure put on them over the last week players would even consider a wage cut? They are so disconnected. _______________ I'm still not comfortable with them being called out like this. There's a lot of millionaires in this country, a lot who made their money from peoples pain and misery, rather than entertaining people and bringing joy. This witch hunt needs to end now.
I'm sure it'll be very helpful, but doesn't setting up a charity usually involve sticking your face on the front page and then encouraging others to fund it? Not the same as making a charitable donation...I expect there is some of that happening also but I get very cynical about celebrity charities
I understand what HistoryRepeating is saying, I do think some (mostly politicians) will try to scapegoat them as a way of avoiding scrutiny themselves. But I share your feelings towards some of the initatives, Paul Pogba's being the most pathetic, If the public reach £27000 in donations he'll match it. Thats about one day's pay for him, and lots of nice publicity. Pep just stuck a million euros up front as a patriotic gesture, he can afford it but that's real commitment imo.
Looks like it. By government, of course you mean tax payers so the prospect of Liverpool's generosity to ensure their non playing staff get 100% of their wages only slightly heartens me.
I was wanting a dislike button to the Sky tweet, rather than a like button. Not in relation to the news that those non-playing staff will still be paid 100% (that of course is good), but at the news that Liverpool have even decided to use the government assistance.
It doesn't feel right at all that a club making so much money is relying on tax-payers money... However the government have forced the closures, so i can see why they are expected to foot the bill. It's a really complicated and awful situation. I hope Southampton decide to pay the staff out of the players wages, like the spanish clubs. That feels like the morally correct decision from all parties.
