Got a huge job on his hands but the best candidate by a million miles. Just needs to change a few of Corbyn's crackpot manifestos.

Labour have not been fit for purpose in the last 3/4 years. That idiot Corbyn managed to lose seats like Blyth, Sedgefield and Bishop Auckland during his watch. Starmer will have my full support, but he needs to take the party from ridiculous left wing policies and start looking at a more centre left agenda.

I voted for Nandy and Rayner

Will give Sir Kier Starmer benefit of the doubt...let's see who he brings into his shadow cabinet etc and how he fronts the opposition to the Coronvirus disaster...he has a busy time ahead, bit of a baptism of fire....What he had going for him is that he has held a tough national job before..so as they say his mettle has been tested

How he 'fronts the opposition' to the Lager Virus disaster, Pitty :emoticon-0112-wonde

There shouldn't be any opposition at this extremely important, and dangerous, time <doh>

We should all be united, at least for the foreseeable :emoticon-0148-yes:

Let's hope that he isn't stupid like his predecessor :emoticon-0105-wink:

You mean nobody should be saying how the NHS has been systematically starved of funds so that when this crisis emerged they were not prepared to meet the challenge

Or that in the past few months the lies and obfuscation by Bonko and chums has made the crisis worse..

Yes unite in meeting the disaster but do hold the tories/bonko to account... eh the present health minister is a humpty and needs replacing

I'm absolutely over the moon. At last a leader that can unite the party and hopefully the country. There will have to be a cull of the far left and their Momentum backers though..

I think Kier Starmer comes across well pleased he won. Will appeal to the middle classes and the working class alike.

Absolutely agree. I’m not a Labour supporter, but we do need a good opposition party.

What you've just said is a complete contradiction. "Culling" people of a different opinion is not uniting the party in any way. I do think that the combination of Starmer and Raynor as deputy appeals to the whole spectrum of people who might consider voting Labour, though, and most can probably find something to relate to.

I reckon most labour voters aren’t expecting to much from them the way things are and I expect them to grant your wish <cheers>

Unless the Tories form a cross party coalition to fight this epidemic, the party system is in place and Labour are a part of the opposition. As such they are there to contest decisions when they think fit. They are not there just to listen and nod approval to plebs like Hancock..

Disagreement should never be painted as a bad thing. Would you have 'United' around Chamberlain's inept leadership? A good opposition is more necessary than ever to make sure the government don't act in their own interests, with no accountability.

If this current parliament had a proper opposition they should have shouted and shouted and demanded answers over the stupid decisions the government made early on in this corona crisis Britain is facing.

    Herd Immunity.
    The Cheltenham Festival.
Announcing the oncoming closure of pubs and restaurants instead of just ordering them closed instantly.

They have been behind the curve all the way so far, they were too late announcing social distancing and as far as I can see they still haven't announced total lockdown like most of Europe has been in for weeks now.
I'm in total lockdown in Spain watching the news coming out of the UK and the numbers are starting to become scary over there. I really hope I'm wrong but I think it might get worse than Italy and Spain in the UK in the next few weeks because of the delays in addressing the virus head on.
The Government wasted at least 2 weeks which will cost more lives and a proper opposition would have held them to account for their actions.
