Ahem, might be showing my age here. Pretty sure you're not looking at flares, but combination of A-lines, high waisters, & Oxford bags. Not that I wore any. I was still wearing flared Levis which would now be classed as boot-cut.
Well whatever they are, you certainly got more material for your money in those days than you do now with the skinny fit **** fashion. All I really remember about flares was they got stuck in your bicycle chain a lot and made it difficult to climb over fences as they kept catching on spikes and posts as you were trying to clamber over.
Agree about flares. Used the bike a lot then & most people wrapped elastic bands on the handlebars so that they could always have a ready-made bicycle clip. Also remember passing by a football kickabout & getting asked to play. Was wearing A-line Levis (had to be Levis!), which are a flare that starts at the top of the leg rather than the knee. Rather than go the long way to get started, I gingerly climbed over a fairly high barbed wire fence. On arrival on the ground, one of my denim legs didn't make it. Got caught & whipped right off. I looked a right sight playing at the best of times, but this took the biscuit. I only had a pocket hanging on one side to cover my flash red Y-fronts. These days I'd need a cherry-picker to get me over a fence.
