I've said this before, but I'll re-iterate for our visitors. The winter break for the Qatar WC in 2022 will be foremost in their minds when they structure the leagues for the next few years. They were going to have to do something anyway, so in a way, this situation will be ideal when it peters out. I believe a season may be lost in the mire somewhere.

You're the Champions of Europe, of course you should be allowed back in the Premier League.

Oh wait. No it seems you aren't and never were the Champions of Europe.

So no sorry, you've been found guilty, yet again, of wanting something for nothing and cheating.

Besides, who **** would want to see that unashamed ****fest Bambi Bamford in the top flight?

But seriously all. Stay healthy and well.

I think the idea of continuing the ‘current’ season maybe up to a year after it was paused is absolutely barking mate, sorry. Football simply can’t afford a year without playing, so they’ll find a way to play, even if it’s behind closed doors. It’s all about the money at the pinnacle of the game.

    Hi everyone,
I come in peace, invited by Ellandback to give my thoughts on the question posed by this thread.

If the 2019-20 season ends now, I do think Leeds Utd deserve to be promoted.
But I do not think it will actually happen.

I believe that eventually the decision will be taken to declare this season null and void, and expunge all results.
This will of course mean no promotion for Leeds or anybody else. No relegation for Charlton or anybody else. And no Title for Liverpool.

This is going to create a lot of resentment in some quarters, as well as some undeserved relief.
But I cannot see any other decision being viable.

There won't be any football played until well into 'next season' in my view (September maybe) and even then, it might have to be behind closed doors.
Trying to complete the 2019-20 season that far into the future will be virtually impossible I think.
Players out of contract and many other factors will tangle everything up.
And on top of that, the 2020-21 season will be put in serious danger by trying to finish this season so late in the year.

Also I believe that trying to call the season complete now, and enacting all promotions and relegations based on current league positions, would cause a storm of legal challenges from Clubs with something to lose.

I'm not a lawyer, but common sense suggests to me that declaring everything null & void (so nothing actually happens) is legally an easier position to defend than trying to enforce promotions & relegations based on an unfinished season.

    Stay safe everyone <peacedove>

There are sufficient games left for the top 2 to change. Leeds have Fulham to play and so the 7 point gap could be 4 with 8 games then remaining.

It would be always a hollow promotion if Leeds went up as it stands. I don’t see how it could stand legally given as I understand
there is no provision in the Rules governing this. Potentially litigation could be issued with next season suspended pending a court outcome and a potential appellate process.

I suspect the FL will endeavour to finish this season and truncate next season; that way each season would be played over the same number of games.

Irrespective of this debate, it’s seemingly improbable there’ll be any football played for many months.

Three quarters of the season done. Seems fair to me, as a neutral, that it’s two up and two down. I do think Leeds and WBA have done enough.

Having said that I am no stranger to hypocrisy and were my team within a reasonable shout of a top six finish, or in the bottom two, I would have a completely different view.

Villa can’t be relegated in a truncated season as they’ve played a game less than anyone else due to Caraboa final. What’s wrong with finish this season whenever and just have one round of 19 games in next seasons pl. everyone happy and no legal issues

It is an insoluble problem and I am glad not to have to make a call on this since there is no solution that will please everyone.
My own view is that those in promotion and demotion zones are there on merit and demerit respectively and those standings should be taken as final.

I have no doubt that I would be deliriously happy if my team (QPR) was in the promotion zone and incandescent with fury if we were in the drop zone.

A Canadian supporter of Bristol City here in isolation on Vancouver Island wondering what can be done to put some reasonable conclusion to this season. I would dearly love to see Liverpool win the title but I would prefer for them to win it on the pitch and not be awarded it with an asterisk alongside.

In all reality if the season can be finished I think that would be the best thing for one and all because I think we need closure, but not based on some mathematical formula. Whether we like it or not our future on all fronts is up for grabs now and it's anyone's guess as to where we all go from this very sad time in our history. I can really see this horrible chapter in our lives last until sometime later this year and if that should be the case then perhaps we could complete this season next year with all clubs being told that they can not make any changes to their playing staff. Somewhat off the wall I know but I believe everyone want to see a closure for their own personal reasons.

Let's hope we all get through this and come out the other side with a different view of what is really important to us as people, and that has to be family and friends along with the colour of our shirt. Stay home and be safe. EH?

P.S. Just heard that all passenger ferry service to the mainland has been cancelled from my local port and so Vancouver Island has become even more isolated and that's not such a bad thing.

Finish the season is the answer, we go up, you go down, to where we both belong.

All very interesting views so far, but the inescapable fact is that money will determine what happens. Anything else is mere detail.

Unfortunately for you guys, I am also in the camp that sees the season being void.

Unless by some miracle the season can get back playing very soon, you run into the end of players contracts. That means a decision has to be made before you hit that legal conundrum. For me, at this point it looks 70% likely this season will be null and void. It would be the only fair thing to do.

I think that if this season is binned, it will be a hugely unfortunate for teams like Leeds and Liverpool who have come close to fulfilling their ambitions in the last few seasons and ultimately come up short. As a Southampton supporter, I feel that there is probably not a lot to lose or gain by stopping the season. However, I don't think it is appropriate to continue with the football season in the current circumstances. It is no longer than important.

What I would want to add is my perception that having Leeds United back in the top flight would make the EPL more competitive next season. They would probably finish mid-table and you sense they are overdue the kind of rival the team had under Howard Wilkinson. I think they will have to have another stab at this next season - a shame for the genuine supporters.
