Probably not but it's a different kind of environment. I've never been in the forces so you might know better than me but isn't the idea 'break them down to build them up'? Methven just seemed to be 'break them down cos they're not reading my mind'

Could very well still be in the break them down stage. Some take longer than others and she certainly came across like she had an attitude about her.

I would have lost it as well. He even said he didn’t care if it was exact, just tell him where they have gotten up to. He was about to walk on to the pitch and give a speech. Obviously he needed to know if it was 38k, 41k or 46k. Her saying ‘if we get them, we get them’ was a stupid thing to say and showed why the club was such a mess.

That was pretty much my thoughts as well. I’m only up to episode 5 but it seems to me that nobody wanted to take ownership of anything or have responsibility for anything but were happy to take a wage every week.
I really have no idea about CMs business acumen but at times there is nothing wrong with being blunt to your staff about their failings. If they don’t know that they are failing, they won’t be able to stop.

All I know is that if I was about to walk onto the pitch at half-time with a microphone to tell a full stadium whether we had broken the League One attendance record or not - I would want a ****ing number as well.

Given how big the marketing push was to break the record, how on earth can someone in the club marketing team be so incredibly unbothered about whether or not her boss is told the vague attendance figures before he makes the announcement?

It actually winds me up now just thinking about it. There is only one thing CM needs to know before he goes on the pitch - where had the count got up to? It’s totally crazy.

I binge watched this last night. Very intriguing to be honest. A lot of your back room staff seemed inept or disinterested. Donald is a stand up guy who is perhaps naive but clearly wants the best. The Will Grigg fiasco confirmed that. It was a daft move but he did what he thought was right.

Methven is getting some flack I notice. I liked him. I’d have booted that Irish woman far sooner than he did. Her dismissive remarks about the league record attendance actually made me rage <laugh>. He was a winner surrounded by serial losers and he got exasperated by it all.

All in all a good watch. It was more in-depth than the first series. I hope there’s a 3rd for next season (whenever that happens)

It did make me laugh when they showed a 3 sec clip of her taking her belongs to her car :) :) :) She was utterly useless and had the attitude to go with it. I think that the most upbeat people associated with Sunderland AFC were the cooks.

I’d be interested to know how many fans have changed their views of Methven and/or Donald after STID2. I thought Methven came across well. Certainly cared that is for sure and actually wasn’t saying anything that wasn’t true. Maybe the management style needs a bit of work but the fact is that most of the staff looked a waste of space.

Agree with this Bob. I watched whole thing yesterday and formed same opinion as you. Mind there was probably a lot of editing done. I guess some fans were already prejudice against Methven from the day he joined, ie well spoken, Oxford University, southerner and a bit of a flamboyant dresser. These factors would automatically make some dislike him from Day One.

I got the impression that the whole club from top to bottom was stagnating. Methven obviously recognised this and was also critical of Ross's tactics and substitutions. He gave the impression that he certainly cared for he club

I watched the second series yesterday
There was some people saying this series would show Stew and Charlie in a bad light, I thought they both came across very well. Aye they made mistakes but they both showed a lot of passion for the club and are clearly trying their hardest.

It shows them up to be classy operators. Were mistakes made? Yes. However they were done with the right intentions and with the club at heart. I wish my lot had higher ups with as much passion and gumption as Methven and Donald.

I would have said the same myself if not for the utterly dismissive way she spoke to him - her boss. She grudgingly made a call after he pushed her to, did not emphasise that the counting team had to provide a figure before the start of the second half and was totally taking the piss out of him.

I would have been having a 1:1 with her after that match to discuss expectations of her role and would expect a vast improvement to her attitude. The fact that she left at the end of episode 3 suggests to me that it happened and she either resigned or was sacked.

Totally agree that there was a definite attitude towards him from her. It was clear that there were a lot of staff who didn't seem to be doing a very good job.

Someone earlier in this thread said that maybe he'd reached the end of his tether with her, but maybe she'd reached the end of hers with him. The way he spoke to staff throughout was condescending, and whether they deserved it or not, that's just going to get people's backs up. It won't get people working better for you.

Like I said in an earlier post, and I believe that other people said it, he had the right ideas but communicated them poorly.

Out of her depth, not just her, CM challenged them all to up their game. They couldn't.

Finished watching the series. My thoughts for what they’re worth.
Charlie Methven and Stewart Donald clearly care about the club.
Some of the staff were stealing a wage.
Ross did the best job he could.
Mrs EJK has a mam crush on Luke O’Nien.
