Before I reply to your post AR, I admit to coming from this position: I have the highest regard for our armed forces, and because of that I usually afford them some leeway.
His sentiments about people not doing what they are asked strikes a chord with me also but I don't think it was aimed at people like you in anycase.

Having said that, I agree with you that because he has had a traumatic experience on tour in Afghanistan it doesn't make him any more qualified to lecture people. Or anyone else on social media who feels the need to make these rhetorical rants come to that.

It was your comment about soldiers joining the army because they like being told what to do that rankles a bit. It sounded as if you think they are all a bit clueless and can't think for themselves when it couldn't be further from the truth. Then saying you don't like being told what to do "especially not by soldiers" sort of implies a disdain. There's no doubt that some recruits are unruly yobs who like the idea of dishing out physical violence, but there are plenty of others who join for more noble reasons.
Believe me, they don't all volunteer to fight in wars. They would prefer not to although they accept it is their duty when called upon knowing that it may end in their own death. That is why I think they deserve respect from us all.

You've got me wrong there mate. My son was in the parachute regiment, I have nothing but respect for the armed forces.

The point about not wanting to be told what to do by soldiers, refers to never wanting to see British soldiers patrolling British streets doing work that should be done by the police. Putting British soldiers on the streets of Northern Ireland is an example of just how badly this strategy can go wrong (and just how quickly. British soldiers in NI were initially welcomed by both sides of the social divide in the Province).

This will probably not be relevant, but it made me smile, so:

My wife has been sunbathing naked in the garden, as she is following current government guidelines, and is unwilling to go outside our propertyy. My neighbours have clearly broken all of the rules, as I overheard one saying to the other that he had just been whale watching.

Apologies AR, sorry if I misunderstood. Perceived criticism of the Forces, particularly the Army, is a bit of a bugbear of mine.

Rishi Sunak doing this evening's press conference. Announces that Boris Johnson is now sitting up in bed and improving, but remains in the ICU.

Also announcing a £750m package to support UK charities.

I have made two calls to head office, with promises of being called back, but received no calls.
You know you are working for a bad company when they don’t have the decency to even speak to you.
I was accidentally put through to the secretary for the board of directors, so I took the opportunity to ask her to forward my concerns to the board.
Currently I am on unpaid leave as I refuse to use my holidays for this.

Am I alone in thinking that if ALL governments did the right thing over the years , Charities would not be needed ?

Much as I love all animals , I don't include the Cats protection league , PDSA , RSPCA etc , as I would no doubt get shot down !

As a near on pacifist I strongly have nothing but admiration for the Armed Forces.

My motto in life after all is that I would much rather live a chicken than die a hero and anyone that puts themselves in harms way to protect me I take my hat off. However, for another thread maybe is can conflict be avoided without the need for people on both sides to die or get injured. That is maybe just me though.

As Archers said though, I am uneasy getting them to do the job of the Police on our streets to combat this situation, but if that is what it comes to so be it.

Our sacrifice by staying in is so small compared to those who go on the front line to fight wars or coronavirus IMO.

Thank you and I totally agree.
Their ignoring the furlough rule changes, IMO, is deliberate as they don’t want people to take time off and disrupt departments that are generally run on the barest number of staff.
I think their intention is to try and force me back to work and they don’t seem to care that it would compromise my wife’s safety, if I did that.
Hopefully for them more people won’t find out about the rule changes, people with childcare issues as well as those with care responsibilities, and also push to be furloughed. :emoticon-0105-wink:

Is there any reason why they can't get a temp in Badger? It wouldn't cost them any more if you were being paid by the government. Do you have skills that are not easily replaced by a temp?

No skills, just good at what I do. :emoticon-0102-bigsm
Seriously though, the job I do used to be done by two members of staff, then 2 years ago my colleague left and wasn’t replaced. This alone has saved the company more than £35,000 in wages.
The workload now is vastly greater than 2 years ago, but I am blinkered, at work, and organise myself and the department so well that I clear the work with the equivalent of half a helper. It also helps that I don’t skive off 3 or 4 times a day for cigarettes and coffee.
And blowing my own trumpet, I am sorely missed when on holiday etc because errors are made by my replacements putting stock in the wrong places, which causes problems for the stores, who receive the wrong items because of the errors. Maybe this is why they are screwing me over.
