Yes, they were other mums at her son's school. The message purported to be from someone on the frontline of the NHS and they were scared by it. I told my daughter to message them back and tell them not to be so ****ing stupid, but she wouldn't because it scared her too.

I am at a loss for words Strolls, utterly appalling. Do your best to reassure her that this is complete bullshit.

This is so awful, but I assume (because I want to see the best in people) that it was forwarded by people who were scared themselves, and are so upset they do not know what is correct and what is wrong. Please keep assuring your daughter that this is wrong. There is only avery limited amount of bad news that the powers-that-be can keep away from us , because people on the front line (like Stainsy) would be shouting about it.

People are just scared, and do not know who to believe...and the power of the internet means that "Karen down the road" knows far more and is a better expert than Chris Whitty

Yes. In Newcastle it seems to be precisely that - utilising the Internet to allocate duties as close to your home as possible. There are 3 tasks at the moment and you go on the list as a volunteer for each you are prepared to do ie telephoning the elderly /those in self-isolation or vulnerable, delivering patients to hospital for their 'routine appointments' and delivering food and grocery parcels to people you live near to who can't get to the shops themselves. They have an app along Uber lines and the volunteers take the calls if they are available at the requested time if they are free.

Great news Ubes, count this as one of the 'little victories'. You may remember in Porridge the old lag Fletcher talking about 'little victories' when they got one over the screws, same applies here when we get one over the virus...

My daughter had same message from her schoolmums WhatsApp group. I explained to her that front line staff we know would have tipped us off and we'd already be in total lockdown if it were half true. Obviously some attention-seeking halfwit, hopefully they'll find whoever it is and prosecute them...

Expect to hear about an extension to the lock down period tonight (due to end next week currently)

It will be interesting to see if It will be on the same terms

A friend who is a nurse at my local hospital has just spooked my other half by saying that It will be a complete lock down

I don't believe that it will be that severe

The exact opposite is the truth.
Youngsters are surprising resilient to the disease whereas it’s the elders who are the ones who are in real danger. Of course anyone with underlying health problems are particularly susceptible.

Not sure if this is the case, it was due to be reviewed next Monday and they have already announced that the review will not take place. I don’t think they ever set a hard and fast end point to the restrictions/strategy. It will depend on whether what we are doing is working and when it works. I Heard- peak (not sure if this is infections or deaths, I’m guessing deaths) is expected to be around 17 April.

Is a ‘complete’ lockdown even possible in this country? They would have to find a way to deliver food and medicine to every household in the country if they don’t want us to go out at all. Something like the French, or at least Parisian, lockdown might be possible though.

Well to be honest, the present lockdown is a half hearted attempt and in my opinion will only prolong the situation. Personally I can only see 3 possible conclusions. (1) a vaccine. (2) a reliable nationwide available antibody test. (3) open the doors and most likely the floodgates!

    4) an effective treatment for the most serious cases, in which case we could let it rip anyway.

The CEO of Astra Zeneca was on this morning mainly talking about the unit they are working on with others which will do 30,000 tests a day in three weeks time. He was also talking about the treatment that AZ are working on, which is about controlling or stopping the thing which kills you - the body’s own response to the virus (as Beth was explaining the other day). Other companies are working on this and also on other drugs that can attack the virus itself. Likely to be a cocktail of stuff which is effective.

A few Communes in Italy are starting antibody testing, not with these do it yourself kits but with blood tests which are analysed in a lab. They seem confident that it will work, the central govt will be making a call on the technology soon.

On the subject of vaccines it's reported they are looking at the BCG vaccine which many of us will have received at school, that was expected to give up to 60 years protection. Trials are taking place and a variant may be produced from it quicker than developing one from scratch. It may explain why some people are less affected by the virus...

    I disagree.
I think the present guidelines are working as well as can be expected.

French numbers yet to come in, and I don’t think the US is really comparable, but today we seem to have higher numbers of new cases and more deaths than Italy and Spain. This is actually good news - numbers at last seem to have topped out in those countries and hopefully we are not too far behind.

I am praying for bad weather this weekend. This will encourage people to Stay Put at Home and not go out. This is helping combatting the virus. A good friend earlier has just messaged round saying that his mother-in-law (in her 80's) has just been diagnosed with Covid 19 - potentially catching it from her sister who is in the same Care home in Surrey. My friend is a distance runner - he has had to stop but wishes other people would stay put.
In a very strange way, I am glad that Boris caught Covid 19 and that this has been shown on the TV as it highlights to everyone how this affects people. Plus, in the morning news there was the good news of the 61 year old coming out of hospital (being applauded by hospital staff) who he said saved his life.
These short term measure will be good for us all in the long run.
    Stay Safe everyone

If you have coronavirus but are asymptomatic, how do you spread it if you are not coughing? Is breathing enough?

    One for Beth probably.
