Saints make the long awaited announcement: - nobody at the club will be furloughed - will continue to pay 100% of salaries - the board, senior coaching staff and entire first-team squad all opt to take a voluntary wage deferral for three months In doing so, become the first club to reach a pay deferral agreement with their playing squad. https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/...lub-statement-coronavirus-response-april-2020
Rightly so. How every premier league club are not doing this as a minimum is beyond me. Shame on those that haven't.
Oh come on Magic, I was really fearing the worst with Gao looking down the back of sofa's then shrugging. This is brilliant news. Trial blazers.
Considering how limited Gao is financially this is a reasonable and responsible reaction to the current situation. Well done to the management and players.
It is still good obviously, and as I said much better than any other club has done so far. Talking of Gao though, how much do you think the average Saints player earns? £50k a week? So lets say 25 (estimate at players in squad) x 50,000 x 4 (monthly salary) = £5m. That is how much the club is saving in one month from the players (not including managers or coaches) not being paid. I would guess that that covers all the staff who were going to be furloughed's salary for a year pretty comfortably. So the rest of the money can go into a pot to cover the loss of earnings the club is experiencing now due to no games, or it could go into Gao's pocket or it could be donated somewhere. I am not privvy to the ins and outs of Saints finances and what the money would be going towards so all this is obviously guesswork. I would argue that the best course of action any club could take is for the players to still receive 100% of their wages, paying some tax on this large amount to help the NHS. Then in each club they set up a pot where they donate money to keep the non-playing staff from being furloughed.
What more could they have done? The important thing is the club are not using the Furlough scheme. The players themselves are donating to the NHS. This will also hopefully force Spurs to change their stance.
Proud to be a Saint. of course there is always more that can be done, but this is a huge undertaking to defer payments for three months. I am so pleased we have declared that we do not intend to use government furlough option. Well done Saints.
Of course this isn't important in the grand scheme of things, but I do get some satisfaction from Saints embarrassing Spurs. Spurs really should be ashamed of themselves.
The World is going ****ing mad, I read that two youngish men were licking their hands and rubbing a load of groceries in a Morecombe Sainsburys yesterday...
