The problem is the government need to lock us down for at least another 3 weeks.
The longer it goes on the more some people won't want to go out.
At the moment I don't even want to go to the supermarket once a week.
Have people got money to spend, the self employed will have to wait till June for any money.
How many households up and down the country will be holding onto their money because they don't know what the future holds.
I've not worked for 3 weeks and don't know when I will be going back to work.
Not that I've got much money, but even if I don't get any money from the government I wouldn't even work in a supermarket at the moment if they offered me a job.
There will be a lot of people who bolt off to the shops , pubs restaurant when they open, there will also be a lot who won't.
They interviewed a couple of b and bs in Brighton and they were saying people are cancelling even for August.
Holidays the majority of people I've spoke to will be giving holidays a miss now this year.
    Blimey it's hard
The government need us to stay in , but there will come a time when they need us to start spending I'm not sure people will be rushing out there.

To an extent, I think people will bounce out given the chance. But as you say @Clb74 they won't want to part wit a lot of money. There Will also be the fear of a second wave of infections, plus the doubts that there will be work for everyone. This won't just rectify with the end of lock down, a recession is going to be a big part of the next scenario.
Mind you, I need a trip to the hairdresser, and seeing those photos above make me worry that in a month, my head will be beyond help.

I've heard a rumour. Nothing specific or backed up... possibly nothing at all.
(this has come from a friend, not something from the internet).
Something unexpected might be announced in the daily TV briefing this evening.

Most of us are expecting the Government to decide to leave the current lockdown rules as they are for the next few weeks.
And to let us know this some time soon.
It's possible however that we may be about to hear that the lockdown rules are going to be tightened.

I don't know what form this will take.
It might be an instruction to all non-essential employers to close and furlough their workers. So far that has not happened.
Or it might be a ban on going outside for daily exercise, before this coming Bank Holiday weekend. That would make it easier for Police to keep parks, public spaces and tourist spots like beach fronts clear of people.

I've only had the vaguest hint that something like this might be on the cards.
If it does happen, presumably a very full explanation will come with it.

A little advice on take-away food.

If it isn't piping hot when you get it, pop it in the microwave for a minute (remember to remove any metal foil parts).
Making it hot in a microwave should do for any germs that might be on it.
And wash your hands after unpacking it and before you tuck in.

A hardware shop was open locally to me, I cannot see how that is essential, yet a general stores opposite was closed.

    All very messy.

    Some shops have remained open.
Holland & Barrett for instance (though heaven knows why, and their staff are very unhappy about it).

We know many building sites are still open, along with online delivery warehouses and some factories.
In theory the firm I work for could have stayed open, but the bosses decided to close it temporarily to protect the workers.

As I say I have no details, but we might be heading for a closure of all non-essential work places.
This would ease pressure on the buses and tubes somewhat, but increase the cost to the Government in more furloughs.

Saving lives and keeping the NHS working smoothly is what matters most. We can't just flog our doctors, nurses and care workers to exhaustion.
If the Government tightens the lockdown to protect the NHS, then we should accept their judgment in my view.

Defining non essential will be problematic I would think.

Hardware shops normally sell plumbing and electrical materials and are thus deemed essential

We've only got a couple of hours to wait until the 5pm briefing.

As I say, there may be nothing out of the ordinary said at all.
I wouldn't have mentioned it, except the little word I got came from somebody I trust*, not something I read on the net.

*it isn't Royston in case anybody was wondering.
Not suggesting I don't trust him - just saying it isn't him.

Obviously not the same place, but in Spain we went into lock down on march 14th. Extended later to April 9th. We were expecting it to go for another two weeks, but today they extended the lockdown to 10th may, but with the warning it will almost certainly go further. There's a guy on CL (Stu.of.Kunming) who lives in China and said ages ago Wuhan would be locked until April, which is pretty much how it planned out, and as he has lived this first hand, I never really thought it would be different here. I'd imagine most countries will fo the same sort of planning, depending on how the numbers plan out.
I can't see any reason to lift restrictions in the UK today, but the government have gone down a different path from nearly everywhere bar Sweden with the herd immunity thing. You guys have had lock-down-lite compared to most of Eutope, so maybe they'll open some doors but genuinely if there is a change of position I'd expect them to go the other way. See where you are at 5pm ,(that bit is for Elfs, who seems to like it as a phrase of hope).:emoticon-0140-rofl:

The pie in a pie and mash shop is minced beef, the liquor is a creamy parsley sauce.

A general stores sell food and drink.

I get what you are saying Smudger BUT a supermarket/major merchants can cater for what LITTLE is in a hardware shop. We need to find ways of closing more places rather than open.
