This article was published in today's Times and demonstrates that while people may have had underlying health problems it was the virus that killed them. Had it not they would still have had many years of life left to live.

    Taken from today's Times:

"The average coronavirus victim dies ten years earlier than they otherwise would have, a study suggests.

Researchers from the University of Glasgow said that their analysis should combat any suggestion that the virus was mainly killing people who would have died soon regardless.

“In spite of the fact that many of these people have got long term conditions, the loss of life per person, on average, is not trivial. In fact, it’s reasonably substantial,” Dr David McAllister, who led the research, said.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics last week showed that people dying from coronavirus in England and Wales had an average of about three pre-existing conditions.

“Among people dying of Covid-19, the number of years of life lost per person appears similar to diseases such as coronary heart disease,” Dr McAllister, a Wellcome Trust intermediate clinical fellow at the university’s institute of health and wellbeing, added. “Information such as this is important to ensure governments and the public do not wrongly underestimate the effects of Covid-19 on individuals.”

The Glasgow team’s analysis looked at data from Italy showing the age at which Covid-19 patients had died, and whether they had underlying conditions, such as heart problems.

They used World Health Organisation tables on life expectancy and data from a large UK healthcare database to estimate how long people with these characteristics might otherwise have been expected to live.

The study, published on the Wellcome Open Research publishing platform but not yet peer reviewed, found that the virus took 13 years from men and 11 from women on average, after adjusting for pre-existing conditions."

Sweden is doing the herd immunity approach and you are correct we cannot say whether it is the right or wrong approach for the country as a whole, but the argument against herd immunity is different when you get down to a personal level.
I saw it expressed the other day: Would you give up 50% of your income OR have a 5% chance of your mum and/or your dad and/or your grandparents dieing prematurely.
Most people will take the income hit, wheras on a community/government scale they would 'prefer' to keepthe economy pumping.

I have now been reliably informed, via the HMRC coronavirus webchat service, that key workers with care responsibilities DO MEET THE CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR FURLOUGH. From the horse’s mouth, so to speak.
So, if my employer doesn’t put me on furlough, then it is not because they can’t it’s because they don’t want to, and that is what I want to know.
I thought I would phone the regional head of HR and inform her of this good news, but she was “in a meeting”.
I am giving her a chance to call back, before calling head office, but I don’t hold out much hope of her calling because she is the person who hasn’t replied to the two emails I have sent her this week.

This company’s lack of professionalism is allowing me to collect a lot of evidence proving incompetence or that they just don’t care, which I am more than willing to share on social media and MSM if I can get them interested.

Well, I’m still in South Africa and, apparently, likely to be for some time now. But, you can now buy fags, which, to smokers, must be a big relief!
I cannot travel between provinces and am in KwaZulu-Natal, with any chance of getting a flight out being from Johannesburg, which is in Gauteng. So I’m staying on the game reserve for the foreseeable future. I’ve checked with my travel/health insurance people and “as long as you’re actively trying to get home” I’m still covered. Quite how one can do anything about being actively trying to get home when there are no flights is a bit of a question, but, oh well. I’m in touch with the British High Commission and they’ve just said “stay put until we know more”, so I’ll go back to counting African Wild Dogs and having (like this morning) 3 lions (I knew there was a football reference somewhere here!) on my driveway.
I just need to be able to get extra medications which I hope I can see a GP about and then I’m set.
Guess I’ve not missed a great deal of football, at least!
Hope everyone on here is safe and well - my internet is super flaky so can only log in occasionally, but I’m thinking of everyone. I heard the club were ringing some of the season ticket holders to see how they are. Sounds like a good idea, if it’s true!
    All the best everyone!

It is true as I reported on here at the time. James-Ward Prowse telephoned me and asked if I was OK. He said they were telephoning all of the vulnerable supporters.

Has anyone else had a call?

May have been asked before, is there a union recognised at your place of work and are they involved in your case? It doesn't sound like it
If you share your evidence it may prejudice any legal action should it come to that. The indifference of your employer beggars belief.
Could be a year or more with a stress related sick note when, if I remember correctly, your retirement is due.

Sounds like a good reason to hire a motorbike and ride the length of Africa - I am being flippant off course but it is something I would like to do some day.

I worked in Gabon mid nineties a group of Dutch and English who rode down to SA from there. Four of them I think. One comment they had "if you think you've calculated your daily trip and spares half the former, double the latter". Just 'kin do it.

Good point about the evidence sharing.
I am in the union, simply because of the fact that I can get legal advice etc, but the union has no strength in the company plus the company doesn’t recognise unions, which is the same as saying “we like to abuse our staff”, IMO.
I couldn’t possibly comment on your last sentence, other than to say that I have chosen not to seek a sick note, in the current situation, because I don’t want to lie to our GP, although she has said to me, with there being no face to face consultations at the surgery if I were to phone her and say that I had a bad back, she would have to take it at face value and sign me off.
I have actually just stumbled across an email address, dispute resolution @..
that was listed under the CEO’s name.
It would have been rude not to have used it, so I have. I don’t know if it goes to him or a minion, but I have requested that my situation is raised to the highest level.
