The Championship table based on PPG
This is how the Championship table based on PPG would look with it being touted as one potential way to finish the 2019/20 season.

The English Football League maintain in wanting to resume the campaign and allow clubs to play out a finish.

There are suggestions plans are being drawn up to play matches behind-closed-doors in a bid to ensure the season is completed.

A growing amount of clubs however are calling for the season to be ended, the lower down the football pyramid you go the more clubs rely on matchday income and the prospect of fans being allowed back yet it’s going to be months before that can happen, increasing pressure for a decision to be made.

Reports claim that businesses such as pubs and restaurants may not be able to open until Christmas.

Further talks are planned with the EFL this week about the options available how to end the current campaign.

See the Championship table if it came to being based on PPG (points per game) should the season get cancelled…

What’s the latest regarding the Premier League and EFL? Well six options are currently being looked at. They are : –

    1) Scrap it

Declare the 2019/20 season null and void with no promotion or relegation.

    2) Finish the season now as it stands

Liverpool would be handed the Premier League title.

Norwich City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth would be relegated. Manchester City, Leicester City and Chelsea would qualify for the Champions League.

In the Championship, Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion would go up – but the issue of play-offs would be another argument.

Luton Town, Barnsley and Charlton Athletic will go down.

    3) Behind-closed-doors

Play the remaining games within a tight schedule with no supporters and just minimal back-room staff and media.

    4) Games in quarantine

All fixtures would be played at neutral venues across the country, with players in lockdown at local hotels to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

    5) Play abroad

Qatar and China has been put forward as a viable destination to see out the current Premier League season now that death rates have significantly lowered recently.

    6) Play until the very end, however long it takes

The new 2020/21 campaign was initially set to begin in early August, however, and pushing that back will have a knock-on effect for Euro 2020, which has already been postponed until 2021.

There are also the issues of contracts, with a June 30 cut-off point as standard.

I'm really surprised how similar the championship table on PPG looks to the current one. Almost as if all teams have all played the same number of games.

I only just realised today that my biggest concern since this virus thing started was the fate of Leeds.

And yet, the average age of someone dying of the virus is 64, & 71% of those dying are men, making me right up there in the favourites list.

Even knowing this, Leeds fate is still my biggest concern.

My deal with the Devil is that I can hang on until our first game in the PL, then he can do what he bloody likes with me!

    Scrap it.

    Just kidding!!!!

Since the season started Leeds and West Brom have not been outside the top 2.

If we had to bring the season to an end, the fairest way is points per game.

Can't see the Premier League having the balls to relegate the current bottom 3 though.

I keep telling you, it's not a skirt, it's a kilt. Now if you're so keen on men in skirts, perhaps you should buddy up with the Tranny Three the next time you're over? Perhaps they'll be more accommodating? <whistle><yikes>

My view was always to finish the season even if it meant delaying the start of the next one, suspending the transfer window so clubs can’t add to their squads. I know there’s the issue of contracts expiring and the argument that if you give short term extensions, players might not give it 100% because they know the clubs aren’t renewing them but I don’t see how that differs from the end of the normal season if you look at the Barry Douglas situation. I’m beginning to think that is going to be too difficult if players can just walk out as free agents and even suspending the window won’t help because they could still join a rival as free agents can sign outside of the transfer window (I think). So, and I know I’ll be accused of it being that it suit’s Leeds but to null and void a season when 80% finished would be scandalous and if you look at the table if PPG was used it pretty much reflects where most teams are. Promote top two / three from each division and no relegation and drop an additional team over the next two / three seasons. If the matches can’t get finished that is. Let’s be honest we can’t be locked down forever.

Then you've got Dutch league not promoting any teams (currently) and they only have a top league with 18 teams in.

Think the financial implications are far greater here than in Dutch football so would expect a far bigger outcry from the clubs. And the premier league is a bigger seller around the world. Also, can you imagine how teams would feel if Spurs get back into the champions league and benefit from all that money as well because the season is voided?

Yeah I was looking last night and appreciate that it's not all about crowds, but their 2nd tier is probably the equivalent of League 2 in England. Notts County in Non League would be 7th highest average attendance in the Dutch 2nd tier.

Also regarding Spurs getting into CL again, think Holland awarded European places based on the season that has just been cancelled? That is already controversial as you have 5th placed Willem getting into Europe, whilst Utrecht had a game in hand and were just 3 pts off Willem with a miles better goal difference and h2h (not sure which the Dutch league uses).

UEFA competitions are going to be interesting, if the current ones are scrapped I'd argue keeping Man City's ban for the next season's comp (if it goes ahead) would be very harsh considering they had a great chance to win it.
