In fact this totally bemuses me. WTF didn't the government do this months ago? I mean, it's not as if it would cost much money to take people's details at airports and phone them up after Here in Italy when my son eventually got back from the USA where he'd been working in a restaurant, he had his details & temperature taken at both Rome & Venice airports, told to stay in self-isolation for 14 days (he could have got up to five years in prison if he'd defied this) and the local hospital phoned him every day to make sure he didn't have symptoms. As we had vague plans before all this started to go on holiday maybe to Cyprus and maybe to the Faroe Islands this summer, in a lazy moment I looked up their current travel restrictions. Go to Cyprus and you get put in quarantine for 14 days. Go to Denmark without a "worthy reason" and they won't let you into the country, you'll be sent back, simple as that. Seems fair enough to me and what should have been done in Britain, as you say, months ago.
It all puzzles me as well mate. As an English exile it's been slightly embarrassing because, looking in from the outside, we appear to be a bit of a 'basket case' in the way we've handled this crisis. If this was a foreign country where the president boasted he was ignoring handshake guidelines, thereby contracted the virus and talks about the 'success' of 30,000 deaths we'd be shaking our heads. It all looks like chaotic firefighting from where I'm looking. After seeing this morning's David Brent style new slogans I'd say the PM has a big job on his hands later today. His usual 'Churchillian' fighting talk, and weird hand gestures, aren't enough in such a crisis. The country needs calm, decisive and serious leadership ... ... sadly that seems to have been lacking from my viewpoint.
Whatever has been needed to be done, has either not been done at all or been done too late, in effect making it have the same effect as not doing it all. Just look at New Zealand and their statistics, their prime minister acted swiftly, decisively and effectively. Perhaps Boris Johnson should have "stayed alert" about the potential massive death toll in February and then we could have "controlled the virus" and "saved lives". Unfortunately him and his advisers, Dominic Cummings and the scientists, appear to be telling us plebs to do exactly what they should have been doing as a preventative measure.
The BBC news app this morning is more akin to a red top newspaper, with really helpful "articles" on the new warning system being introduced - apparently we are level 4 and moving towards stage 3? Then a brilliant piece on what to look out for in the address to the nation later. I've been disgusted at how the BBC and press have behaved during this. And if I read one more time that construction is still trying to get back to work I will murder someone. ITS NEVER STOPPED, yes it has slowed but it has been a constant since day 1 that construction continued and rules / advice have changed to suit the availability of ppe not to mention the rules changing on social distancing as it is impossible for certain trades and tasks to be completed and to stay 2m apart
My Mrs has been caring for 30 odd year. We were due to go on holiday the first week of lockdown. Obviously holiday cancelled as was the Mrs time off as it was all hands on deck, no moaning, just get on with it. Well now after doing the job for the length of time she has, having to revise for exams after 12 hour shifts to keep her NVQ up to date. All for just above the minimum wage she was told to sign the official secrets act ( a 62 year old carer )5 weeks ago. They can have a week in the next month then no idea when next. She can't say much about it but to me that looks like they're letting them recharge their batteries before another spike. Scary times and I'm worried sick for her and her mates and colleagues. She,d go radio if she knew I'd put this on but had to get it off me chest.
There's a weird idea that seems to be. circulating among some people and gaining credibility. It's as if this virus lockdown is like a storm when people shut their doors and windows, bunker down ... .... then when's its 'over' we'll all pour out into the street, blinking in the sunlight, and simply get back to normal. The PM needs to come clean and tell people this isn't a success, isn't over and isn't likely to be for a long time ... ... any provaricating will have people ignoring the rules and marching us straight back to square one.
I had to go shopping today for a week's worth of food for the house. It appears life is back to normal and the "worst is over" God help us all if the message tonight is soft and doesn't reflect the seriousness of the situation
It's really been like that for weeks marra Vast majority are social distancing People still gan to work even I'mvolunteering but walking to work not using public transport unless it's raining The only real change is nee mass gatherings
I can see it coming if the message is soft, live just off sea road and it'll be like the airshow next week if the weather gets decent. Metro chocka, shops mobbed. Madness
We need to look at other countries who have eased the lockdown; Coronavirus infections are rising in Germany, official data shows, just days after the country eased its lockdown restrictions. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's reproduction rate - the number of people each confirmed patient infects - is now above 1. This means the number of infections is now rising in the country. The report came as thousands of Germans gathered on Saturday calling for a total end to the lockdown. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced a broad relaxation of national restrictions on Wednesday after talks with the leaders of Germany's 16 states. All shops are allowed to reopen, pupils will gradually return to class and the Bundesliga - Germany's top football league - will restart as soon as next weekend. Coronavirus: Is R the crucial number? How lockdown is being lifted across Europe Coronavirus lockdown around the world in pictures But there were protests across the country on Saturday, as some called for measures to be lifted even quicker. Germany has the seventh-highest number of confirmed cases in the world, with latest RKI data on Sunday showing the reported infected tally at 169,218 and a reported death toll of 7,395. Similar in South Korea where 34 new cases were reported mainly in a reopened nightclub region of Seoul. 15 of those cases are linked to one man - this isn't over for a long while yet methinks
The P.M. needs to come clean about what ? Has he been telling us that it's all over, or it's likely to be over shortly, 'cos I must have missed that bit I'm expecting him to say almost the exact opposite at about 7 o'clock 'cos anything else would be stupid, as any sane person knows. Unless some are trying to make us believe that he has said something that he needs to 'come clean' about . . . . has he ?
How about a bit of honesty? We tried a herd immunity, then panicked, so we introduced a soft lockdown that after all of 7 weeks is being reduced. Got to love the press, they speak for the nation and we demand an easing of restrictions. How about some honesty that its been a shambles, our policies and rules have changed not because of science but because or availability or the cold hard fact the existing rules are unworkable.
Come clean maybe isn't the right phrase tbh ... ... be straight would be better. By the way the police, in the parks, were struggling yesterday it seems people have misinterpreted the message. Saying it's been 'a success' and that we're past the peak, etc, encourages the wrong reaction imo. He needs to spell out just how much trouble we're still in.
