Just to throw in a bit of reality and good news here, yesterday was our first day to record zero deaths in months with some counties registering no new infections in last three or four days. Seems to be coming under control for the moment at least

Was it a bank holiday in Ireland ? Has been here and I noticed the testing place has been shut all over the long W/E so lower new case rates won't mean much here as they just haven't tested as many.

Nope. Our bank holiday is next week. Figures had been heading that way for last week or so. Icu figures also way down to just 50 now which is a fair measure

Hey, I got off a drunk drive charge today. I told the policeman I had drunk a bottle of wine but all I was doing was taking a drive to see if I was pissed. Fair enough he said and then commented on the fact that my wife and children were in the car so he was sure I was just doing the right thing.

Other than he's Boris' mate so he must be good, what do you know about Cummins? Herd immunity was his plan... he changed his mind and went for lockdown because they'd misjudged the death figures. His seemingly overnight change of heart is a subject of mirth within his own party.

Cummins is a big believer in superforecasting, where you look at the probability of various outcomes and model policy accordingly. They wanted to micro manage corona with interventions when needed... but they fell at the first hurdle, panicked and went for lockdown, which was the right decision at the time... just a bit late for all the dead people and their families. I've pretty sure that Cummings still believes in herd immunity as a policy. An awful lot of people who understand viruses agree with him. Given your posting history on Corona, I'd be surprised if you were supportive of his real views... that was the point of my post.

Cummings is a bright bloke but unlike Boris (also a bright bloke) he actually has an agenda and some beliefs beyond wanting to be loved and famous. He has a reputation of thinking the ends justify the means... he's been called Leninist by many who know and work with him. As a political advisor, he was behind some of the made up brexit 'facts' that the public lapped up but he didn't care because it was win at all costs. Same with Corona, he wants the country back up and running so he can get on with his plan to change the world - lockdown was an inconvenient necessity.

I think cummins is a dangerous piece of work but personally have no beef with his herd immunity ideas. There's never been a successful vaccine for a corona virus and the idea of getting as many healthy people to catch it as soon as practical without overloading the health service has merit... the intention being that's how you protect the vulnerable in the long term. But it's not very palatable to the general public with death tolls piling up, so they window dress their moves. Are our kids going back to school because their education is critical? Or so they can spread the virus with little risk to themselves or to family members who are likely of a low risk age group themselves? That's supposition, but they couldn't come out and say that though could they.

We've been spoon fed fear to get us to keep to lockdown... and now we're being told it's all ok if we're alert. It's all wonderfully vague, I've wondered if it was just incompetence which given some of the half wits in the cabinet it could be... but Cummins isn't a fool - i'm pretty sure they want and expect people to abuse it, but they can't say its ok for people to die.

My view is the best and quickest way out for the country is to lift restrictions and get back to normal for the majority, but not lift them for the vulnerable - and protect them as best you can until the rest of us have had it. It's easier to starve virus of new hosts than to find a vaccine for them. But I also accept that what's best for the majority is no comfort for those badly affected.

Don't get me wrong i hope we get a vaccine, but its an if and even so may be some time coming. The virus will come back, most likely gradually weaker and weaker over the years until it's just a common cold like other corona viruses. It's not in a virus' best interest to kill all their hosts, so they tend to moderate. By that time, we will have had many more of them to worry about.

Can't be bothered to read the waffle, but in his interview yesterday, he said he voted for lockdown right from the start, the fake news in the papers is irrelevant. ;)
Listened to what he said and I would have done the same as I believe would most.
PS despite the fake news many were saying yesterday, it was his Mother's Brother who died of corona virus, and not an uncle through marriage. <doh>
