When you weigh it up, I personally think us northerners (generally) are people who want to work hard. I know some of the middle class do work very hard but a lot also don’t. If you put a plant in working class community, the working class will step up to make it work. If you ask Timothy Pennington-Smythe to work his arse off he’ll tell you where to go!!

I know one lad who works there and he loves it. Says it’s brimming with those wanting to work hard

There are many valid arguments on both sides.

No need, imo, to call people dickheads for a particular preference.

The Tory PM, at the time, was a passionate remainer ...

... no idea what Boris is tbh.

I’m not sure Renault, long known for poor build quality and having repeated issues with strike action etc will have an issue being tied to the most productive car making plant on the entire planet.

I think they will be quite delighted with it.

I agree about Renault, but when I first started work, this was what I heard about Japan from the men I was apprenticed too.

That the Sunderland Nissan plant is a top facility was never the question.

Nissan seemed to be doubtful about Europe as a market in any case, but now at least maintain some commitment. Problem is that the plant is not running near capacity (and that always impacts profitability) and the idea was to move some Renault model production there that share the same platforms as the Nissan cars. Thus really keeping things running well.

So far so good, but brexit aside, the covid-19 situation has crippled many companies, and last week Renault basically said they would have to close. The French government has offered to bail them out BUT on condition that all the money is spent in France and that all new investment and developments by Renault are France -based. Additionally they must move strongly to EVs and new models, with one of the current French factories changing to battery production.

Hopefully the move of car production to Sunderland goes ahead and it does not get killed off by the political post-pandemic situation. However it's not clear if the French government will allow placing any new models outside of France, so any benefits may be short lived.

The 2 main hopes are that the excellent record of the factory and workforce, plus the benefits of having some production on "the other side of the customs fence" will have enough economic strength to keep it going.

Great news for everyone involved. The plant is their most efficient so it stands to reason that itd be kept on. A cost analysis involving any potential tariffs would have happened and if its still cheaper and better it either says a lot for the rest of them or the Sunderland plant is just amazing. From my mind it was never in trouble.

If the plant got closed by Renault/Nissan,would another car company not just take it over, as it seems to work so well?

It's only a few months ago that we were being told, by Remainer's in general and our local MP's in particular, that a vote to leave the EU would most certainly mean the closure of the Nissan Plant.

    Now there's a thing.
Professional Politician's got things 100% wrong.
    What next?
The PM using a brain cell instead of a sperm cell?

And while I appreciate anyone who has foresight and is prepared to share with us, is perhaps predicting 10 to 20 year ahead pushing it just a bit?

Remember, Nissan and Renault are Commercial Business's.
The motive is first and foremost PROFIT.
And as long as the Sunderland plant is amongst their most profitable plants, (it's said to be THE most profitable Worldwide for the company at present), then it's going to stay open.
The workforce have made themselves indispensable.
It's up to them to keep it that way and I have no doubt that they will try VERY hard to achieve just that.

As we know, France has it's economic problems at the moment. The 'Yellow Vest Protests are starting up again and the underlying issue seems to be one of a Government trying to curb unsustainable Social Spending.
So my bit of foresight is only a short term prediction that The French are not going to threaten Nissan in the short term. (And Yess, I agree, any fool can work that out!!!).

And I don't see many people gloating about the loss of jobs in Spain or anywhere else.
Unemployment is a dreadful thing, whoever becomes the victim, but it's also natural to want the best for your own families and friends as a first priority.

NoDeal and your factory is a gonner chaps. Sadly Boris and particularly Rees-Mogg who has bet heavily on this outcome will ensure that their interests have priority. Let's face it you got mugged with Brexit.

Brexit could be a minor blip compared to the huge economic impact that Covid-19 is likely to have.
