Because this country has a finite amount of space and a finite amount of resources some of which are pushed to their limits already.

Maybe because you don't see many "asylum seekers" sleeping on the streets but you do see many Brits?

From a security point of view, just who are these people smuggling themselves into our country? They could be murderers, rapists, do they carry any ID and if so, is it legit?

They could be. Then again so could someone born here. If you want to rape and murder then you likely try to stay away from places with advanced crime fighting and intelligence agencies.

While there will be a few bad eggs in any random group of people. Why should immigrants looking for a better life be more likely to be criminals than anyone else?

Yet in the current Covid-19 crisis shelter has been found for many rough sleepers across the country

"Housing Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said:

By working closely with councils, charities, faith groups and health providers, we have offered accommodation to over 5,400 people who were sleeping rough at the beginning of the crisis: that’s over 90% of known rough sleepers."

    Source

This shows to me that there is the ability to fix this long term but not the appetite. That's a failing of the British government, not the fault of those looking for a better life

The entitled that sleep on the streets of London and all major cities in the UK?

The entitled kids that go starving because their parents can’t afford housing and food but perhaps just one?

The entitled who increasingly use Food Banks throughout this country of ours?

The entitled kids that rely on free school meals to be fed?

So, which of those entitled are you refusing to acknowledge because those are the entitled I am referring to. Yes we should help those in need but that doesn’t mean we have to let anyone and everyone into the country that wants to come.

I agree that we shouldn't accept everyone.

All those groups yo list there exist as a result of wealth inequality in this country and that definitely needs looking at.

However (there's always a however isn't there?) turning back people who are in the middle of the English Channel on boats that are often no more than rafts is surely not the best way. Should they not be accepted onto our shores, and then put through the immigration system we have in place to be granted leave to stay or not as the law dictates?

Likely to stay away from places with advanced crime fighting and intelligence agencies? What, like Rotherham and the countless number of northern towns where grooming by Asian men was inflicted on hundreds if not thousands of young, vulnerable white girls. And talking about vulnerable people, that is what so many of these people who come here will be (if they already arent) when they get used and abused by gang masters and criminals, often living in ****holes and forced to work for a pittance while the authorities dont have the 'resources' to investigate.

When are you Remoaners going to realise that the reason Brexit is happening is because the majority of the public were sick to the back teeth of the softly, softly approach of successive governments to open immigration, either illegal or the two million eastern Europeans landing on our shores?

So you are saying that these people coming in (assuming they pass immigration tests) will be both criminals, victims and I assume upstanding members of society?

Police numbers were cut during austerity which harmed the effectiveness of our crime fighters. Get police staffing back up past 2010 numbers (based on population growth) and the resources are going to be there again to deal with the criminal element you note here

I readily accept that this is not a black and white situation and it’s dangerous to try and make it so but as a general rule my position is as stated above but retain a discretion exercisable in exceptional circumstances.

I wouldn’t turn them back in the middle of the English Channel rather I would have them picked up and immediately returned to where they came from.

There are procedures in place for asylum seekers and those simply wishing to migrate to this country why should those who follow these procedures be prejudiced and have their applications delayed by those who simply choose to ignore the procedures? It’s not fair on those who do follow the procedures. Why have any procedures at all if you would then just process anyone who turned up on our shores?

PS Don’t ask me what the procedures are as I, probably like most people, only have a vague idea but I do know there are procedures and if they exist then they should be adhered to in fairness to everyone.

I agree that illegal immigration is a problem. It's like the drip, drip effect of having a leaky roof. Unfortunately 99% of the conversation around it is us arguing over who is paying for the bucket catching the drips, panicking that the bucket isn't big enough, or wondering if the water is toxic to us. Instead of trying to fix the leaky roof we squabble over the consequences, ignoring the people getting rich from stealing the lead on the roof that causes the leak.

Until we are willing to look at why so many people are willing to risk their lives getting here then the problem will never go away.

I did vote remain in the referendum but this thread has no bearing on that as is discussing illegal immigration which will happen to all rich countries not matter if they are EU members or not.

Legal migration from EU states is a completely different topic.
