It was never in doubt that teachers would. The papers make a big deal out of teachers being heavily unionised but as i pointed out on another thread the reason for it is not because of some old labour ideals it's because if anything happens in school that could cost us our profession or livelihood (kids falling off chairs, any allegations made, etc.) the schools will abandon us in a heartbeat (they have to really, they need to protect themselves and investigate us). The union offers us insurance and legal representation as part of the fee, without it then all it takes is for a kid to hurt themselves in my lesson (or at a break-time if i don't lock the door) or to claim I've touched them and that's it I'm by myself against school/colleagues/media/police/etc.

The unions need to feel relevant (as the fees are hundreds a year) so they make a song and a dance but so long as my school is reasonable to me I'll be reasonable to it. Most schools I know of (and I'm only in contact with 5 senior schools) think the government handling of it has been a shambles but they're going to make it work as that is, at the end of the day, their job.

They aren't being prosecuted, government said so.

We've had responses suggesting it'll be more like 30 percent of reception and year 1 but 50 percent of year 6. Year ten and 6th form I'm just not expecting many, they won't affect the economy (parents can leave them), they won't want to come in and I reckon most parents will not bother having the argument.

Don't think I'd send my kids in if I had the choice to be honest, though they've been in for a day or so a week throughout

If either of my two were still of school age I absolutely would not be sending them back. They'll be breaking up for the 6 weeks in about 5 or 6 weeks time..not worth the risk. Nothing they don't learn in the next 6 weeks is gonna disadvantage them later in life in the grand scheme of things.

    In six weeks you'll be choking on a peanut and think;

****, why didn't I let my kids go to that first aid class

Which subject teaches first aid? Secondary or primary?

We run a course with the year 10's but it's a couple of off time-table days.

I've only seen it once in a school I've taught at and that was to a year 10 class as well but during an assembly workshop and they chose which one to go to.

Should it be taught? If so is it an outsider, or by PE or a pshe class or a science lesson?

We get outsiders in. I certainly couldn't teach it as I have only a vague idea of what to do, I really need to do a course myself.

I did a course about ten years ago and never had to use it once. Could I teach it, NO!

I'm surprised local hospitals and the red cross don't go to schools every year to teach it.

As I'm in an inner London school the amount of workshops we've had on knife crime and gangs is ridiculous. My year 9s ( my form group) have had 4 workshops on it this school year alone!

Yeah we have a few of those and also someone came in to talk about terrorist indoctrination. It's not a huge issue on the Wirral...

Do you know how many staff meetings we've had on fgm and terrorist indoctrination in the last few years? Almost 10. How do I know this? As I've got about ten print out certificates saying I've done it. <laugh>

I walk around the streets these days and if I see someone I've seen before acting differently I'm like terrorist? Fgm?

Not surprised then that there are apparently so many knife attacks and gang issues in London and Greater London if you're teaching them how to do it!!!

First aid really should be on the curriculum like, as should some basic sign language. Not once since I've left school have I needed to do algebra or know what happens when you set fire to magnesium (it glows really brightly incase you didn't know). I would have much rather learnt how to save someone's life with CPR, say hello, how are you, would you like a beer, do you take it up the arse in sign language etc. The only things I learnt at school that have served me well in later years is maths, english, bit of history (handy for pub quizzes and ****), geography (kind of a fundamental for GIS), and Economics. Had I known that the internet was gonna come about back then I probably would have sacked it all off, got pissed and stoned a canny bit then got my **** together and put my life into golf (something which is not taught at school either as far as I know).

Why do people always mention algebra?
It is literally used by everyone daily even if subconsciously.

The whole point of education in schools is to give them a grounded foundation to the basics of subjects which they then narrow and narrow the further you go in life.

The main issue is the government's decision to push everyone into having a minimum gcse grade and stopped vocational schools. I teach a year 10 class where 5 of them should not be doing a gcse but they have to. A few of them would do much better on a vocational route.

Also doesn't help with the dumbing down of universities courses.

If anything there should be more a promotion of youth clubs ( when I was 13 we had first aid training) and other extra curricular activities but considering the Tories are closing down libraries I can't imagine any investment in these areas.
