Incredibly complicated when you look at all the different types of business. All have differing needs. That's without getting into the demographic of their workforce etc. There is a lot of learning to take from this via a review. For instance in construction there has been a massive error by the government. They got us all to shut down (although later claiming they didn't). So British Gypsum stopped operations. Then Boris announces on a Sunday night we can go back on the Monday! British Gypsum are quoting mid-late June to get the supply of plaster back up and running. The big suppliers should have been forewarned of trying to get operations moving. You can't put plaster on the walls, a lot o other trades will grind to halt pretty quick. Its a simple thing, but one which has been missed in the melee and its having a massive impact.

I just find it incredibly selfish to have a such a short term view of all this. Reality is I'm middle class, even once the double recession hits I'll be ok due to having a very robust and well run business. We have contracts secured which will see us through 5 years and beyond. However I am acutely aware I also have a responsibility to the wider society, because the people who are going to be hit like a sledgehammer over the next 5-10 years are gonna be those on the breadline. Always the way. We can't just be I'm alright jack pull the ladder up about this.

There will have been loads of mistakes made during this whole episode. I am hoping that those who have made the mistakes can put their hands up and admit them, and that others will recognise that whoever was in charge would have made mistakes and don't use it as a sledgehammer to hit them with if they were honest mistakes. It is the only way we will learn going forward. As hard as this has been, it is also an opportunity to improve the way we do things, not just for another outbreak in the future but also in terms of improvements we can all make to the way we work.

I am also one of the lucky ones. I have been told that whatever happens my job will be protected as far as possible and that I will be supported through however long it takes - within reason. We are lucky that our company was taken over by a very large company a while back. While our sector (events) has ground to a halt, other branches of the company have government contracts which have continued. The parent company is happy to subsidise our company to ensure we are still here when it is all over. A lot of others won't have that safety net. I feel for those who have lost jobs, or who will lose jobs, as they are facing a very long road back. I am hoping that going forward this will hit me in the pocket in taxes so that we are supporting those others as much as possible, along with the essential services which need a lot more investment . For me, it's a price worth paying in the short term otherwise we are going to be passing on an even bigger debt to our kids.
