Funny that with unemployment in the UK now rising by the day, you cannot fill the jobs that are there. If you have this surplus why do you need to get people from abroad in?

You should remember the UK has minuscule unemployment compared to where you live, Spain Italy etc. The UK will be in a far better position to be able to choose labour when required, to do jobs considered beneath some Brits. I welcome the British position to choose an intelligent entrepreneur from Hong Kong rather than being forced to take Romanian pickpockets and drug dealers.

But you are desperate now to have people come to the UK despite now having a surplus of labour. Maybe you should introduce conscription and get all those unemployed out in the fields.

Maybe some of your white british furloughed Berkhampstead mates can go and pick the much needed UK veg that may rot in the fields...

Thus implying that East Europeans are a) not intelligent enough to be entrepreneurs (as if intelligence was a prerequisite for this) and b) are likely to be pickpockets or drug dealers. It may interest you to know that European migrants to the UK are (on average) far better educated than the native population - over 45% of EU migrants have University degrees. Can you take your racist stereotyping somewhere else please ?

    Agreed.

I think this message board does not need such comments... and considering present racist riots in the US, Palestinians being shot in Palestine etc etc.... such posts are not fit for these boards

Meanwhile... people are dying in our hospitals...

I listened to Grant Shapp this morning give no decent answer as to why they are delaying masks coming in... Every day of dealy means more infection spread and more possible deaths.

This Govt has delayed again and again on just about every count... My heart aches for those who have died due to this....

Not at all, I was merely highlighting the improved ability of the UK to take those considered to be excellent workers rather being forced to take all and sundry, including undesirables, previously.

You wouldn't expect to get a straight answer from the multiple identity Mr Shapps, or Mr. Green and his get rich quick schemes. Another fine example of Watford Boys Grammar School.

The UK has positions for low skilled labour to pick fruit & vegetables on a short term basis, just as they do in Spain with labour from North Africa.

Interesting though that they cant recruit from the in country work force ..... .Pople dont want to do it...

I suggest a seasonal veg picker from central Europe is worth just as much to our society.......

Right so why aren't all the low skilled staff from Wetherspoons rushing to get out there and pick fruit and vegetables. The UK economy is built on services, so there is plenty of labour available now.

The same reason Spain has to import labour from Morocco, the locals won't do it.

I'm sorry SH (well actually I'm not sorry at all, it's just a figure of speach) - You will be accepting 'all and sundry' into the country unless you instigate a visa system for entry. If you do this than you will drive tourists away in their droves. Do you know how much European tourism contributes to the economy of London alone ? Bring in a visa system and most of those will take their weekend visits (and money) to other alternative ( more welcoming) cities such as Vienna or Paris. The fact is that for every one person who arrives at the UK border with any intention of working there are over 20 tourists, who will come, spend their money, and then go. At the point of entry you cannot know the one from the other. You may also find that the deportation of your so called 'undesirables' becomes more difficult in future now that there will be less cooperation between police forces, and shared information.

You should not confuse tourism with short term employment and those coming to live permanently in the UK. I agree much has to be done to tighten up the procedures so it is more difficult for illegals to work and remain undiscovered. I expect after all the noise of Brexit the border and police agencies will cooperate with each other as it is in all of our interests to do so.

But the low skilled staff at Wetherspoons are foreign nationals in great numbers. The boss admitted to a Commons committee that he couldn't function without them, and wanted an exemption from any visa restrictions on his business. What a hypocrite.
