In the Pretty Polly I felt compelled to take on clear favourite Tiempo Vuela. 11/4 seems a skinny price for a filly with a fair bit to find. The form of her only start and win does not look much to my eyes and her Racing Post rating of 83 for winning a class 5 Novice leaves her behind the best of these by at least a stone for now. I have seen Trefoil tipped up with the comment that there was plenty of substance to the race she won last year but the truth of it is that the 7th that day English King is the one making it look sexy. He has improved massively but it does not follow that Trefoil will also do so. Her RPR was 77 for that win and she has a lot to find. For all that she could improve a fair bit Ralph Beckett is 0/13 this past 14 days and a miserly 8% for horses running to form. That makes the 1/26 and 15% RTF for Richard Hannon look like he's in a purple patch. Trefoil is not for me.

The three fillies well ahead on RPRs are Run Wild, Queen Daenrys and Alpen Rose. Interesting that Run Wild is more than double the odds of the favourite and stable companion because she has a higher best figure so far. The trouble with Run Wild is that she never followed up on what looked a breakthrough win when tried in better company. She is closely tied with Alpen Rose when they were 4th and 3rd respectively in the Group 2 May Hill and then ran twice on heavy ground after that. She seems much better value at 13/2 than the favourite. Queen Daenrys ran 2nd to Cloak Of Spirits on debut and then went one better in a Novice race. She then ran quite well in the Fillies Mile, earning the rating that puts her to the fore here. She has had wind surgery since though and that puts me off even thought the Varian stable are in reasonable form. Looking back at the May Hill I felt Alpen Rose was the one looking for further that day. She was disappointing in the Montrose Stakes but the ground was heavy that day when she finished behind Run Wild. Back on a sound surface and at this trip I thought Alpen Rose was value at 7/1. Despite the Pinatubo reverse Charlie Appleby is batting at 21% and William Buick rides the daughter of Sea The Stars. Michael Stoute has an interesting one in Snow Shower and the stable are in form but she has a bit to find and Stoute may not have put the gun to her head yet. Plenty tips for her in this race but I preferred Alpen Rose at the same odds. Tiempo Vuela looks a poor price with other unexposed ones and more established fillies taking her on.

    3.00 Newmarket Alpen Rose 7/1

If anyone is around, Bafferts Charlatan is out of the Derby, which leave him only with Authentic whos about to run in the Santa Anita Derby.

The 7/1 will be long gone if he wins and once our bookies hear the news that Charlatan is injured.

The 1000 Guineas looks like a choice of two evils: pick one that looks like a middle distance filly or hope that one of the juvenile sprinters gets the mile.

I am inclined to take on the favourite Quadrilateral as her Fillies’ Mile win may be the best form on offer but she looked like a middle distance filly even then and had this race been run in May it would have been considered her prep-race for the Oaks. Except for one off day, the Mile third Love has been a model of consistency, including winning the Moyglare, and it is notable that she is the only Ballydoyle representative and she has to be a danger to all, although I wonder if she too wants further than a mile now. Boomer was fifth in the Mile after being runner up in the May Hill and the trip looks her optimum.

The Cheveley Park winner Millisle looks like a through and through sprinter as does runner-up (odds-on favourite) Raffle Prize; and if the tail wind persists from Saturday, being held up to get the mile and coming from behind may be a tall order. The Cheveley Park does look the best two year old form on offer other than the Fillies’ Mile.

The Godolphin Kingman filly Summer Romance may not be one to rely upon as she promised to be a good filly on her first two starts but then showed temperament when beaten twice subsequently, finishing behind Millisle on her last start.

It is notable that twice-raced Shimmering, owned by Lord Lloyd Webber, is allowed to take her chance by John Gosden and having won over a mile we know she stays! No proof that Karl Burke’s once-raced Yes Always is not a sprinter.

In a wide open race, the three that interest me most are at big each way prices.

George Baker’s Les Hogues is a French import. If one is prepared to take a form line through three year old form, on her last juvenile start for Jean Claude Rouget, she was just beaten on heavy ground by 2020 Pouliches winner Dream And Do. The more rain the better for her, but I cannot take the form line as Dream And Do may just have improved.

It is difficult to say for certain which yards are ‘in form’ given the minimal amounts of racing we have seen, but Under The Stars comes from the James Tate yard (2 wins from 12 runners since the restart, including Far Above) and I think she can give a good account for P J McDonald today. She finished fourth in the blanket finish to the Rockfel last term but just ahead of her was thrice-raced CLOAK OF SPIRITS, Richard Hannon’s filly having disappointed when favourite for the May Hill (where Boomer finished second). With just one win from 26 runners, the yard ‘form’ does not augur well.

When I have backed Elarqam, he has disappointed so I am leaving him alone in the Brigadier Gerard – either he will bolt up or the lightly-raced Sangarius will become the latest Stoute improver with age.

    Good morning horsey folks :)

Telly pics for me are: (nothing too off the wall)

    Nmkt
    150 Communique
    225 Davydenko
    300 Alpen Rose
    335 Quadrilateral

    Hay
    205 Fanny Logan
    240 Elarqam
    315 Space Blues

I found the Pretty Polly almost impossible to decipher, before having to agree with Grendel, that Alpen Rose seems the safest option! I really like Davydenko and hope he takes this ahead of a successful season. 3 market leaders at Haydock.

    Good luck all <ok>

    ~Not sure I can really make a strong case for Shimmering. But on the other hand, maybe I can;
Gosden. Dettori. 16/1. Question marks about the three at the head of the market.
    That's it really.

Hi all..having a couple of bets today:

Newmarket 3.35pm Millisle 4/1 win. Finished off last season with a win at Newmarket so handles the track. Trainer seems confident she will stay so fingers crossed they don't get too much rain there today. Booking of Murphy a bonus and he could well do the guineas double.

In fact thinking he will have a good day so thrown three of his rides in an each way trixie for a laugh:

    Newmarket 2.25pm Good birthday 5/2
    Newmarket 3.00pm Racing wild 13/2
    Newmarket 3.35pm Millisle 4/1

    Good luck all.:emoticon-0167-beer:
