The latest edition of TSP sees us undertake our first 'squad assessment'. In Part One (of 2) we focus on ‘the wrong end of the pitch’ - goalkeeping and defence! We (inc. Simon Peach) chat through all the questions and comments you'd expect......assessing whether we think our GK, Left-Back, Right-Back and/or Centre-Back positions are really PL quality!? Do we have an established long-term player in any of those roles? Does Ryan Bertrand still have the hunger to play for Saints? Is Kyle Walker-Peters the long-term answer at RB? Where should any funds be spent as a matter of urgency? Does Glen think Wesley Hoedt should be given a 'second chance' this summer?(!) So much to cover in TSP109, across arguably the most concerning areas of the current Saints squad! If you'd like to listen to it, you can find it via any of these links: acast: https://bit.ly/2RbuAIw iTunes: https://apple.co/3aPVnly Overcast: https://bit.ly/2wby5Hs SoundCloud: https://bit.ly/3aLkPIC Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2RdlPxp Part 2 out soon….
Firstly, a very Happy Easter to you all. Secondly, you can now find our latest episode of TSP (TSP110) online. This edition of 'Total Recall' sees us proudly welcome two-time Saints Player of the Season, James Beattie. 'Beatts' talks about life in and around The Dell and St. Mary's, through the late 90's and early-to-mid 00's. Conversation covers James early career at Blackburn Rovers, his move to Saints (and the part Dave Jones' son played in that!), The Great Escape '99 season, the final game at The Dell, hot goal-scoring streaks, the 2003 FA Cup run, England frustrations, some listener questions and much much more! Should you wish to listen, you can find it via any of these below sites/links: acast: https://bit.ly/2K1MIAk iTunes: https://apple.co/3ceJZjs Overcast: https://bit.ly/2VhSSSi SoundCloud: https://bit.ly/2XrFzkP Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2VjwxE1
That was a great pod cast. I can tell Beatts bleeds red and white. In my opinion, he would be invaluable to the Saints coaching staff. Very intelligent, and would no doubt be an asset to Saints.
We're back with another 'Lockdown Pod', as former 90's midfielder Neil Maddison joins us for Total Recall. TSP111 sees Neil talks about his memories of initially signing for Saints as a schoolboy, keeping Alan Shearer company on the long train rides down to the South Coast, working with Dave Merrington, making his first-team debut - against Vinnie Jones and the Crazy Gang! - before eventually winning over Graeme Souness! We undertake Part 2 of our Saints Squad Assessment - this time focussing on midfield and attack (TSP109 for Part 1 – GK and defence). TSP112 sees the same merry band return to discuss what may happen to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, whether Southampton FC may be forced to try and reintegrate Mario Lemina into the squad, how many more chances Sofiane Boufal is likely to get, as well as the likelihood of Moi Elyounoussi returning from Celtic and ‘tearing it up’ in the Premier League. Moving further forward, Danny Ings has been a sensation for Saints this season, but do Che Adams, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi give the Club enough firepower heading into 2020-21? Does Adams have attitude problems, is Obafemi too injury prone, will Shane Long be offered a new contract……or could Guido Carrillo offer the team some much needed physicality up front? The TSP views and opinions are, as ever, a blended mix of honesty, constructiveness and reality. No-one has ever played more games for Saints (over 800) than Terry Paine, and only 3 players in history have scored more goals for the Club (over 180) - he is quite simply a footballing legend. Add to that an MBE, the Honorary President position at Saints and being a member of the famous 1966 World Cup winning England squad and it’s quite some CV! TSP113 sees us/Saints Archive have the pleasure of reminiscing with Terry about some of his most memorable career moments. Whether it be Club or Country, Terry has many fantastic stories to share in this episode. Brilliant, thanks Ben, a wonderful bit of nostalgia from one of my earliest Saints heroes and a true club legend. A real pleasure to listen, thank you again.
Over the past 40 years, Dave Merrington has spent many hours coaching our youth team players, managing us in the Premier League and summarising on Radio Solent. TSP114 sees TSP/Saints Archive catch up with this 'Saint', chatting through his numerous stories and memories. Whether it be working with young Matt Le Tissier's and Alan Shearer's, battling Premier League survival (with zero budget!) or supporting Adam Blackmore's matchday coverage, Dave's done it all! You'll do well to find anyone who is more passionate about life in and around St. Mary's than 'Big Dave' - he's quite simply DC! TSP116 - The Dell Years 19 years ago this week, our beloved old football stadium closed its doors for the final time. Having hosted the last ever competitive match (vs Arsenal on 19th May 2001), and the last ever match (vs Brighton on 26th May 2001), it saw 103 years of dedicated service come to an end. To celebrate one of England's famous old football stadiums, TSP116 sees us joined by Russell Masters, the man behind www.historicsouthampton.co.uk. Among other things, we discuss Saints first moving to The Dell (in 1898), the first ever match, stuffing Pompey, boxing bouts, World War 2 attacks, record attendances and, of course, the final competitive goal - scored by the one and only, Matt Le Tissier. This episode is simply full of Dell content and memories, as we pay tribute to this massive part of our Club/City's history. This week we're proud to be in the company of Saints 2019-20 Player of the Season (OK.....we've jumped the gun a bit there!), Danny Ings. Danny takes some time to chat (33:30) about life at Netley Rec, his personal reflections on the season, scoring/knee-sliding at Fratton Park (in the 4-0 South Coast demolition vs Pompey!) and Project Restart. As if Danny's presence isn't enough, Greg Baker (Head of Saints Foundation) also joins us for TSP117. Discussion with Greg covers the incredible work his team continue to deliver to the people of Southampton - despite the impact/challenge of the Coronavirus pandemic. Finally, Greg also talks about another one of his passions - collecting a certain type of football memorabilia! “How many? How many?”........*wallop*!! Yes, Neil Heaney was only at Saints for a fairly short period, but he still made quite an impact – not least on Spurs' full-back, Dean Austin! Having started life at Arsenal, under the stewardship of George Graham, he moved to The Dell in 1994, after Alan Ball made his move. TSP118 sees Neil talk about his journey from Highbury to the South Coast, the impact Bally had on his career, playing alongside the likes of Matt Le Tissier & Ronnie Ekelund, serving up some well-deserved revenge on Spurs and more! FOOTBALL. IS. BACK!! Yes, give or take a few days, Saints will shortly be returning to the pitch to complete the 2019-20 season. TSP119 sees us joined by Glen, Joe Prince-Wright (NBC Sports) and Dan Sheldon (Daily Echo), as we discuss all things #ProjectRestart. Alongside that there's also reaction to Ralph's new 4 year contract, the stability that hopefully now brings Saints, the 'SFC Playbook' and the latest on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's situation. Lastly, ahead of visiting Carrow Road, we preview/predict (try to...) the impending Norwich City fixture. Saints kicked off their Project Restart campaign in style, walloping Norwich City 3-0. TSP120 sees us reflect on all the key talking points from that first game back. Discussion includes Dan Sheldon’s matchday stadium experience (*spoiler alert - there were LOTS of desks!*), Danny Ings carrying on where he left off, Saints excellent fitness levels and also strong rumours that a former TSP contributor may have completely changed his stance on ‘must win’ predictions! The episode also previews (32:00) Saints next Premier League fixture – at home to Arsenal this coming Thursday - including Glen's views on Cedric Soares being injured again! acast: https://bit.ly/3fPDftN iTunes: https://apple.co/2YWZAin Overcast: https://bit.ly/37Rf23S SoundCloud: https://bit.ly/3dqBm5k Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3eq0bQb
Saints secured their Premier League safety with a classy and professional 3-1 win against Watford. It was the Club’s 8th top-flight away win of the season – a Southampton record! TSP121 sees us bask in the knowledge that another season in England’s premier footballing division awaits Ralph Hasenhuttl's side. As well as reflecting on the Hornets win, there's an update from sponsor Virgin Media (22:45) about some of the brilliant initiatives they’ve been working on, in partnership with Saints, during the lockdown. Finally, in what now looks like a ‘free hit' for the haloed safety-achievers, we preview next week’s game against Manchester City (34:45). P.S - Danny Ings is amazing!! Your weekly dose of Total Saints Podcast is here..... Yes, all in all, its been a pretty good week for Saints - with the massive win against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City (which achieved mathematical Premier League safety!) being followed up by a largely excellent showing away to Everton. TSP122 sees Ben, Steve and Glen catch up swiftly after the Goodison fixture to reflect on those two performances/results. Alongside news on the 2020-21 Saints kit release, the Pod also includes a preview (30:00) of next Monday’s visit to Manchester United’s ‘Theatre of Dreams’. This current Saints side simply don’t know when they’re beaten – as was proven again up at Old Trafford. Despite trailing for much of the match, Michael Obafemi pounced in the 96th minute to provide more jubilation for us all. TSP123 sees Ben, Steve and Glen joined by Dan Sheldon (Daily Echo) and Simon Peach (PA Media) to review all the significant moments from the 2-2 draw, including Oriol Romeu riling Gary Neville (#JoyousScenes). With two further fixtures just around the corner for Ralph and the lads, we also preview (22:50) Brighton’s visit to St. Mary’s (on Thursday) and the trip (30:30) down to relegation threatened Bournemouth (on Sunday). Saints 2019-20 Premier League away campaign came to a finish with yet another win! Only this season’s Champions have claimed more points on the road than us - as we've ended with a record top-flight haul of 31 (which includes 9 wins!). TSP124 sees the regular panel - and Dan Sheldon (Daily Echo) - look back on another successful ‘day at the office’ (/emotional roller coaster!) for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men. The Pod ends with Dan discussing the latest on Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg (23:00), and a preview of the final Premier League fixture of the season for Saints – at home to Sheffield United (27:45).
